Color vs. black-and-white; digital capture vs film; Europe vs the United States\, with and without people; approaches that seem to be polar opposites\, yet are somehow complementary through the harmony of subject matter and the well-ordered\, geometrical compositions. Two photographers present their visual insights into the often-overlooked aspects of two cities they are intimately familiar with. \n  \nIn their own words: \nRichard Hassett \nI am a Eugene-based photographer\, more accustomed to photographing nature and landscapes far removed from any city. For this project\, however\, I decided to focus my camera only within the confines of Eugene. Inspired by the work of photographer Fan Ho\, and the paintings of Edward Hopper\, I chose to seek out quiet\, sometimes mundane\, scenes of everyday urban life. Strong early morning light was my preference\, but fog or rain often set the scenes. For some reason\, I can’t explain why\, I am drawn to these quiet scenes that usually go unseen in a busy urban environment. They leave questions unanswered. I like the feel of it. While working on this project\, I have had no esoteric plan in mind. My desire is simply to create compelling images from the scenes I find. The photos are open to individual interpretation. If an image causes the viewer to stop and think about what is happening\, or even why it was taken\, then I have succeeded. All photographs were made in color using a digital camera. The prints are archival pigment prints. \n  \nDoremus Scudder \nBefore I moved to Vienna in the 1980s\, I had concentrated mainly on landscapes and natural forms in my photography. But after arriving there\, I was confronted\, and fascinated\, by the geometric forms; the right angles\, parallel lines\, the arbitrarily contrasting textures and tones\, and the juxtaposition of old and new that make up human constructs. Above all\, I was drawn to the narrative component that makes up the background of these scenes. Although people are absent\, they are central to these images; their strivings and successes; their struggles and failures and how time has dealt with them. These are not “pretty\, postcard pictures\,” but rather\, I hope\, images that work on multiple levels\, being able to stand on their own as abstract geometrical compositions (I spent time absorbing the work of Piet Mondrian)\, but also full of the human story\, sometimes whimsical\, sometimes tragic\, that comprise the subtext behind the façades.\nOver the 30 years I lived in Vienna\, I spent countless hours carrying my 4×5 camera and tripod around the city\, usually on my bicycle\, looking for scenes that were visually interesting\, but full of though-provoking content. I prefer temporally ambiguous scenes\, which I feel lends a feeling of universality and timelessness to the images. I find that the gradual metamorphosis of human artifacts over time – the old being overlaid with the newer or gradually sculpted by time – creates a temporal patina that is rich with narrative. I leave it to the imagination of the viewer to populate and enliven these scripts. Each subject was asked one question: “What is it like for you to be an American?” \nThe responses\, handwritten by each person\, were depicted to create a spectrum of ideas about what it is like to live in this country in this era. \nThis presentation includes a demonstration of how the portraits were made using the 8×10. One person in the audience will be asked to pose\, and answer the question about what it’s like to be an American. That person receives a print of their portrait. \nBooks of this project will be available on-site.

It will be an introductory session\, during which Joni will discuss her work and the participants will share theirs. The group will meet for a photowalk at Albina Press\, 5012 Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland\, on Sunday\, March 22\, 3-5 pm PST. Subsequent sessions will be scheduled by Joni and the group. \nJoni Kabana is a visual artist who is most happy when she is deep into a world which is unfamiliar to her. Her body of work spans continents and cultures with a primary focus on portraiture. Her belief is that our best portraits come if we “photograph thoughts\, not faces” and her approach focuses on the psychology\, both with the subject and the photographer\, that arises when attempting to capture the essence of a person. Joni teaches for several institutions and organizes her own portraiture and international photography workshops. \nStreet portraiture is her signature teaching area\, helping many overcome fear of approaching random subjects in addition to “crossing cultural divides” by enabling photographers (new to the craft or experienced) to create authentic portrayals of brief or in-depth encounters. You can find Joni roaming backroads afar from home or making pictures in Eastern Oregon where she nestles in an isolated cabin.

Included in the exhibit are photographs from his series Transcending Loss – (1995-97)\, Aqueous Humor (1997-98)\, Re-Picturing the Picturesque (2005-08)\, Post Mortem (2008-09)\, Pictorialist Drawing (2009-19)\, and Glass Worlds (2025-Present). \nDarryl Baird: “I’ve been an ardent student of history all my life\, but it was the history of photography that truly captured (for me) the essence of how history informs and directs our actions. My introduction to photo-history led me to find early photographers\, and the periods that they were attached to\, like Pictorialism\, Modernism\, and even Post-Modernism. As my research and reading of these periods continued\, I felt the urge to explore them as a means of personal expression. Looking back at the images in this exhibition\, I can see these early aesthetic patterns emerge\, like chapters in a book… my book.” \nOriginally from Dallas\, Texas Darryl Baird has an over fifty-year career as a photographer and educator. His initial education was at the United States Naval School of Photography in Pensacola\, Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Broadcast-Film Arts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas\, Texas. \nHe worked for twenty years as a commercial architectural\, advertising\, and editorial photographer. He left the commercial field for graduate school\, first in a doctoral program in Aesthetic Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of North Texas. \nDarryl is an Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Michigan in Flint\, where he created and taught graphic design and photography programs. He led the department as chair of the Communication and Visual Arts department for a critical transition into a combined discipline. \nHis work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston Texas\, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. \nSince retiring in Oregon\, he has been included in two exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland (PNW Drawers)\, a solo exhibition at the Performing Art Center in Newport\, Oregon\, and awarded an artist residency at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. \nhttps://www.darrylbaird.com \n

In the midst of this otherwise rugged and unforgiving landscape lie pockets of surprising softness: Dunes. These lie baking in the blistering sun for the most part\, but in the glancing light of sunrise and sunset\, they take on an unexpected voluptuousness and sensuality. Their strong forms and many moods\, in my view\, are rendered more distinctly and powerfully with my chosen “instrument”: Black-and-white. \nI usually approach the landscape with patience\, and introspection\, but capturing the fleeting instants created by the moving light on the dunes requires working as quickly as I can with a 4×5 camera and a tripod. I have been fortunate enough to have been rewarded generously. I believe that the forms and textures in nature resonate strongly with our most basic natures\, demonstrating a kinship that we often overlook in our modern existence. I offer them in this spirit.” \nDoremus Scudder began photographing seriously in his early twenties\, eventually stepping up to\, and mastering the techniques of\, the view camera. He now works exclusively in black-and-white\, using large-format cameras and film\, and crafts silver-gelatin prints in the darkroom. Nothing is done using digital technology. \nWithin this medium\, he uses varied subject matter\, careful organization\, and a broad and expressive palette of tonalities to create images of strong form and character. For Doremus\, the \nfunction of art is to enrich and uplift the human spirit through excellence and beauty: it is to this end that he strives. The photographs themselves are their own best description\, expressing their wordless world eloquently in the language of light. \nDoremus Scudder’s work is exhibited widely and represented in numerous galleries and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.
