Over five decades\, Rauschenberg has compiled a truly distinctive archive of photographs encompassing a wide array of themes\, styles\, uses of the medium\, and range of subjects and content. This important resource represents a diverse mix of international and nationally emerging and established photographers. \nRauschenberg typically acquires photographs directly from the artists or from non-profit community-based arts organizations exhibiting or representing their works. \nRauschenberg has also traveled extensively and participated for decades as a highly regarded reviewer of photography portfolios at international gatherings of specialists who utilize and support opportunities for working creative photographers. \nIn Gathering\, one will find a wealth of individual points of view that\, when engaged\, may broaden each of our own visions: whether those considered perspectives are personal\, familiar\, social\, cultural\, political\, or spiritual. \nChristopher Rauschenberg reflects on his building of the collection: \n“At the core of what I’m doing is acquiring prints directly from photographers. That’s where I get my real satisfaction in collecting. With photography\, one literally sees the world through someone else’s eyes\, and we each have a different way of looking at the world around us. This world quite wrongfully demands that perfection be limited to the young and privileged\, and so through these photographs\, I ponder the explorations of life and its glorious complexities that is afforded someone who made it past the “youthful” years and am decidedly enjoying an era of revelations and reincarnations. The wrinkles\, scars\, aches + pains\, plus sized clothing\, and my glorious white hair are each passages in the book of my life written into my layers skin for all to see. \nEach of these photographs are made by hand either in my basement darkroom or at Franklin FOTO using a variety of alternative processes as well as silver gelatin. Like all humans\, each print is beautifully unique and one of a kind. Photographers seeking dramatic ocean views with rugged cliffs meeting turbulent waves should prioritize a visit to the Oregon Coast. \nAs they present themselves\, our subjects will be diverse marine and plant species\, sea birds\, whales\, sea lions\, and lighthouses\, and stunning coastal landscapes. (People are welcome to bring their lunch.) \nWithin the Bittersweet: Artist and Publisher Talk with Allison Grant and Evan Baden \n\nPhotographer Allison Grant will discuss Within the Bittersweet\, her\nlong-form photographic project that explores the emotional weight of raising\nher daughters in Tuscaloosa\, Alabama\, against the backdrop of climate crisis and local industrial pollution. Drawing on a long tradition of socially\nconscious photographers who make political work laden with the personal\, her images negotiate pressing new concerns as our planet undergoes rapid and irreversible change. \nGrant will be joined by Oregon State University professor and publisher Evan Baden\, who oversees Composit Press. Composit is a student-run press that recently published a monograph of Grant’s project. Baden will share insights into the publication process and evolving landscape of photo book publishing. \nAllison Grant is an artist\, writer\, curator\, and Associate Professor of\nPhotography at The University of Alabama. Her artworks have been widely\nexhibited and are held in collections at the Bainbridge Island Museum of\nArt\, Birmingham Museum of Art\, High Museum of Art\, DePaul Art Museum\, \nColumbia College Chicago\, King County Portable Works Collection and several private and corporate collections. Grant was named on the Silver Eye Center for Photography’s 2022 Silver List. She received the 2020 Portfolio Purchase Award from the Atlanta Photography Group\, the 2019 Developed Work Fellowship from the Midwest Center for Photography and was shortlisted for the 2019 FotoFilmic Mesh Prize. Baden has been the recipient of the Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists\, the Stuart Abelson Graduate Research Fellowship\, and Artist in Residence at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Photographer Carol Isaak found refuge there during the pandemic and fell in love with its archways\, plants\, bridges\, and the way modulated light would puncture its exterior walls. Isaak photographed the garden in all four seasons for this collection in an attempt to express the serenity she felt while in the garden. \nChinese scholar gardens are meant to express calm and provoke contemplation. The layers and shadows in Isaak’s work do both these things. The garden is a collaboration between sister cities Portland and Suzhou\, China. Lan Su is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025. \nIn Carol Isaak’s words: “I call myself an opportunistic photographer—an adventurer at heart. When COVID curtailed travel\, the freedom to photograph regularly in Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden became a vital outlet\, easing my longing to explore. Lan Su reconnected me with my deep love for Chinese culture. Entering the garden beneath the poetic inscription\, “The Garden of Awakening Orchids\,” I was transported—viscerally and visually—to Suzhou\, China. Suzhou\, Portland’s sister city and the inspiration for Lan Su\, is a place I had the privilege of visiting twice. It’s an astonishing city\, rich with artistry and tradition. \nAs I began to explore the Garden’s mysteries\, the seasons shifted—and so did my vision. Over three years\, I collaborated with the space\, allowing my eye to follow its changing light and subtle rhythms. In time\, it became my home away from home. Floating between the magical and the material\, I photographed without a plan—simply responding to the Garden. I’m delighted to bring my work back to the source of the Lan Su Garden.” \nCarol Isaak’s art education was at The Cooper Union (BA) in NYC where she lived for a significant time. She has been a Portland Art Museum docent/educator for twenty years\, specializing in photography\, Asian and contemporary art.
