SUMMARY:Scenes from the 2020 Protests in Portland by Sai Stone at Franklin Foto
DESCRIPTION:Scenes from the 2020 Protests in Portland by Sai Stone at Franklin Foto \nApril 5\, 5-8 p.m. \nFranklin Foto\n8953 N Lombard St\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \nIn 2020\, Portland photographer Sai Stone was on the streets to witness the protests that began in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020. Five years later\, in an era of renewed political upheaval\, we reexamine that time with Sai’s images. \n“Sai’s photography captures the raw intensity and significance of the 2020 police brutality protests\, amidst a backdrop of social unrest and a global pandemic. Through his lens\, he skillfully navigates the chaotic and emotionally charged scenes\, documenting the powerful moments that unfold on the streets of Portland Oregon. \nHis photographs convey a profound sense of urgency and activism\, reflecting the collective outcry for justice and equality. Each frame captures the human spirit\, as protesters bravely confront systemic issues and demand societal change. These photographs reveal the diverse faces and voices at the heart of these movements\, providing a platform for marginalized communities to be seen and heard.” \n-Sai Stone \nAn opening reception is scheduled for Saturday\, April 5\, from 5-8 p.m. \nSai’s work will be on display through the month of April. \nFranklin Foto is a community darkroom and gallery space located in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood. SUMMARY:Small and Connected group show at LightBox Photographic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Small and Connected group show at LightBox Photographic Gallery \nSaturday\, April 12\, from 4-7pm\nShow runs from April 12th – May 3rd \nLightBox Photographic Gallery & Fine Printing\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, Oregon 97103\n(503) 468-0238\nHours: Wednesday – Saturday 12 pm to 5 pm \nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens Small and Connected\, an Exhibit by the Guild at LightBox\, on Saturday\, April 12\, from 4-7pm. \nThis exhibit challenges the traditional notion of scale\, suggesting that size is not a measure of importance. These prints\, though small in scale or modest in subject matter\, reveal the complexity and beauty of a world that often goes unseen. \nThe works in this exhibit remind us that the smallest of moments can hold profound meaning. With each photograph the artists capture threads that connect disparate elements yet resonate with deeper significance upon reflection. \nThrough a diverse range of techniques these photographers use their skills to build an emotional landscape where everything is linked\, where the tiniest details have a ripple effect. “Small and Connected” is an invitation to slow down\, observe\, and discover the profound stories hidden in the simplest of things. \nThe exhibit runs until May 3rd. Complete show info is on the LightBox website\, http://lightbox-photographic.c…. The Guild at LightBox include Jim Fitzgerald\, Jody Miller\, Julie Moore\, Marc McVey\, Rachel Wolf\, Kathy Radie\, Michael Puff and Loren Nelson.

SUMMARY:Zemie Barr\, 2\,000 Miles and Back: Traversing Changing Landscapes at Portland Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Zemie Barr\, 2\,000 Miles and Back: Traversing Changing Landscapes at Portland Art Museum \nPortland Art Museum Photography Council’s Lunchtime Talk Series \nApril 16\, 2025\nWednesday\, Noon to 1pm\nPortland Art Museum\nTrustee Room\, 4th Floor in the Mark Building\n1219 SW Park Avenue\, Portland\, OR 97205\nwww.portlandartmuseum.org / 503 226 2811 \nCost: Free and open to the public \n\nIn her lunchtime talk\, Portland-based artist and curator Zemie Barr will share recent photographic work made from 2021 onward. That year\, she moved from Portland to Chicago\, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and during a particularly devastating fire season for the Pacific Northwest. These events led the artist to create multiple photo-based series to process the grief associated with witnessing the effects of climate change in real time. Using found imagery\, as well as analog and digital photographs taken while traveling across the country and beyond\, the artist balances these feelings of loss with an aesthetic focus on the sublime beauty and magical potential still present in the natural world. \nZemie Barr is an artist and curator based in Portland\, Oregon\, where she previously served as Exhibitions Director at Blue Sky Gallery and co-founded Wolff Gallery. Zemie uses digital and analog photography to explore themes of memory\, loss\, and our relationship to the natural world. Most recently\, her work has been exhibited at Perspective Gallery in Evanston\, IL; Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria\, OR; Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg\, OR; and in online exhibitions hosted by the Center for Fine Art Photography\, ArtDoc Magazine\, and F-Stop Magazine. In 2022 she was selected as one of Photolucida’s Top 200 Critical Mass Finalists. \nhttps://www.zemulabarr.com \n\nAbout the Photography Council \nThe Portland Art Museum Photography Council offers its members unique opportunities to learn more about the history of photography with Julia Dolan\, Ph.D.\, the Museum’s Minor White Curator of Photography. Council membership dues support the acquisition of photographs for the permanent collection. The members’ annual print share meeting\, private tours with Dr. Dolan\, and special invitations to lectures by renowned photographers are just some of the benefits of Council membership. \nThe Portland Art Museum Photography Council’s Lunchtime Talk series\, conceived in 2009 by Past Council President Jim Leisy as a means of introducing the Portland photography community to the wealth of talent and creative energy in our region\, has become one of the Council’s most popular public events. Since its inception\, the LTS has offered over one hundred and thirty monthly presentations by regional and visiting photographers/artists that are free and open to everyone interested in photographic arts and process.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype Making Workshop \nApril 19\, 2025\, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nFranklin Foto\n8953 N Lombard St\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \n$100.00 \nStudents will learn how to prepare the chemical solution\, how to properly coat materials\, how to find exposure times and how to develop and wash cyanotypes. We will cover a variety of printing methods using cyanotypes. \nStudents will need to submit one photo before the workshop that they would like made into a digital negative. We will print the digital negative on a piece of transparency\, allowing for it to be used in the cyanotype process. It is recommended to submit detail-rich images with relatively even tones for best results. \nStudents will finish this workshop with a digital negative\, UV sensitive cyanotype paper and their completed cyanotype prints. The cyanotype prints will have to dry\, so students will need to return sometime in the next week to pick up their prints. \nAt Franklin FOTO we never want finances to be a barrier to access. More information is on our class sign up page.

SUMMARY:Rich Bergeman & Gary Tepfer: Desert Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman & Gary Tepfer: Desert Landscapes \nApril 25 – June 7\, 2025\nReception + Gallery Talk on Saturday April 26\, from 1-3pm \nWhite Lotus Gallery\n767 Willamette St\nEugene\, OR 97401\nwww.wlotus.com\nOpen Tuesday through Saturday 10am-4pm \nTwo veteran Oregon photographers–Gary Tepfer of Eugene and Rich Bergeman of Corvallis–are teaming up for an exhibit at White Lotus titled “From Steppe to Steppe\,” featuring color and black-and-white photographs of arid territories from Oregon’s High Desert to Asia’s Altai Mountains. \nBoth photographers\, working independently\, have been exploring desert environments for decades\, and while they share a love for the spare elegance of the land\, their interpretation of that land offers viewers some engaging contrasts. \nTepfer is known for his striking color images from the American Southwest\, Eastern Oregon and the steppes of Mongolia and Siberia\, regions he has visited many times over the past four decades. “I want to capture that aspect of the natural world that stands apart from human existence\,” Tepfer says. “But the locations to which I am drawn are often the same places that are the most rich in the ritual artifacts of ancient peoples.” \nBergeman\, on the other hand\, is a black-and-white photographer whose most recent work has focused on that portion of the Great Basin that lies within Oregon\, especially remnants of the paleolakes that dot the region. \n“I’ve always wondered about all those ‘lakes’ I’d see marked on maps that didn’t really exist as bodies of water\,” he says. “A little research taught me they were footprints of the great inland seas that once covered the area 10\,000 years ago. Intrigued\, I began to search for them and find ways to dramatize this curious evidence of the past.” \nBoth photographers have work in several private and public collections and over the years have been published in books and periodicals. \nTepfer’s photography can be seen at http://gtepfer.com/ and Bergeman’s at richbergeman.zenfolio.com and blurb.com.
