SUMMARY:"The Palouse in August" - Photography by Patrick Plaia
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Plaia\, The Palouse in August \nMarch 4 through May 1\, 2024\nReception: March 9 from 1- 4 pm. \nThe O’Brien Photo Gallery\n2833 Willamette\, Ste. B.\nEugene\, OR. 97405\n(541) 729-3572\nOpen weekdays from 1-5.\nCall to be sure we’re open or to make special viewing arrangements.\npicmac1945@gmail.com\nhttps://www.waltobrien.net/the-o-brien-photo-gallery \nThese images were shot in August 2022. The wheat harvest was for the most part finished. What remained were empty fields and the tracks of the harvesting machinery. The area is rolling hills with the harvest machine tracks as level as possible. These tracks leave a wonderful pattern of curves. \nI shot planning for black and white images\, and toned them in processing. I visualize my photographs with an eye for graphic composition\, impact\, and interest. My intent is to let the viewer smile\, think\, and appreciate a vision of the world that may be unique to them. \nThis series of images is a collection of toned Black & White landscape photographs. I shoot “real world” images and process them to manage perspective\, color\, tone\, composition\, and the final feel of the print. \nwesternvisionphotography.net \n

SUMMARY:Jim Fitzgerald - Evolution: My Carbon Printing Journey
DESCRIPTION:Jim Fitzgerald\, Evolution: My Carbon Printing Journey \nMarch 9 – April 10\, 2023 \nArtist Reception: Saturday\, March 9th from 4-7pm \nLightBox Photographic Gallery\n1045 Marine Dr.\nAstoria\, OR 97103\n(503) 468-0238\nlightbox-photographic.com \nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens Evolution: My Carbon Printing Journey\, a solo exhibit of Carbon Transfer Prints by Jim Fitzgerald\, on Saturday\, March 9th from 4-7pm. \n“Evolution: My Carbon Printing Journey\, is but a glimpse into a part of my soul which is very personal and meaningful to me. Carbon transfer prints and all the work in this exhibit are created by my hand. They are pure interpretations of light and the ideas that give me so much joy. I believe finding balance in one’s life and work leads to a deeper understanding of one’s self. This visual journey which I present\, shows what I like to call the “balance” in my work. There will be some surprises and some favorites but I wanted to show the diversity of my work of fifty years. I wanted to highlight some of my largest carbon prints\, which are difficult to create and many of these have not been seen before. Many believe me to be the “Tree Guy\,” which of course I am; but there is more to me and my world\, for I am much more than just the “Tree Guy. I am a carbon transfer specialist\, camera builder\, bookbinder\, publisher and educator. My historic process work helps me stay pure to my belief that what comes from my heart will show up on film and paper.” ~ Jim Fitzgerald \nJim’s love affair with the trees and the natural world began at a young age. In his youth\, family trips to Yosemite\, Sequoia and the Oregon Coast helped set him on his artistic path which he follows today. Jim is a member of the Guild at LightBox\, a group of photographers that exhibit work regularly and support the mission of the gallery. The Guild at LightBox consist of Jim Fitzgerald\, Jody Miller\, Julie Moore\, Marc McVey\, Rachel Wolf\, Sam Blair\, Michael Puff and Loren Nelson. The Guild’s work is always seen on the walls of LightBox. \nThe Evolution exhibit runs from March 9 through April 10. Complete show info is on the LightBox website at http://lightbox-photographic.c…. Contact LightBox at 503-468-0238 or info@lightboxphotographic.com. LightBox is located at 1045 Marine Drive in Astoria\, hours are Wednesday – Saturday\, 12 – 5:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:Philippe Mazaud\, Sets (for a Theater of Night) \nApril 5th\, 2024 – May 31st\, 2024\nOpening Reception/Artist Talk: April 5th\, 2024 6-8pm \nPushdot Studio\n2505 SE 11th Avenue\, Suite 104\n(in the Ford Building\, enter on Division Street)\nPortland\, OR 97202\n503.224.5925\nwww.pushdotstudio.com\nGallery Hours: Mon-Fri. 8:30am to 5:00pm\, free admission \n“The pictures to be shown at Pushdot Gallery were selected from a larger ensemble of nocturnal pieces\, shot over a period of ten years in parts of the Western U.S. — areas in Idaho\, Utah\, Nevada and Washington. \nThe work is as much about fiction as it is documentary. It suggests a set-like quality that places take on at night\, a staged\, somewhat artificial appearance that becomes evident in the photograph.” \nPhilippe Mazaud (born in New York City\, American and French) is an artist currently based in Portland\, Oregon. His work involves both painting (notably in its unconventional use of dry pigments and pastel blocks) and photography (a blend of analog and digital). It positions itself\, in some sense\, at the interface of several domains — pictorial and photographic\, analog and digital.

SUMMARY:Synchronicity and Scenes from the Park
DESCRIPTION:Synchronicity and Scenes from the Park \n\nApril 13th\, 2024 – May 8th\, 2024\nOpening reception: Saturday\, April 13th from 4-7pm \n\nLightBox Photographic Gallery\n1045 Marine Dr.\nAstoria\, OR 97103\n(503) 468-0238\nlightbox-photographic.com \n\nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens two exhibits\, Synchronicity and Scenes from the Park\, on Saturday\, April 13th from 4-7pm. Please join us! \n\n“Synchronicity” is a juried group exhibit featuring the work of 27 photographers. In life we experience events that seem to be random but have a profound influence on us. In the practice of photography Synchronicity also occurs. We experience it when everything aligns on all levels. Synchronicity was juried by LightBox Guild member Sam Blair. \n\n“Scenes from the Park” is a solo exhibit by Astoria’s Jody Miller. “For years I lived in a mobile home park in Palm Springs\, California. I grew curious about others who lived in my park and imagined what their life stories might be like. During this past year\, I created images that hint at these personal stories of imaginary events\, all made during the “blue hour” at dusk\, when we can easily transition into dreamlike scenarios of our own making. There is both stillness and drama at this time of day\, and the Sou’Wester Lodge in Seaview\, Washington” ~ Jody Miller \n\nJody Miller is a member of the Guild at LightBox\, a group of photographers that exhibit work regularly and support the mission of the gallery. The Guild at LightBox consist of Jim Fitzgerald\, Jody Miller\, Julie Moore\, Marc McVey\, Rachel Wolf\, Sam Blair\, Michael Puff and Loren Nelson. SUMMARY:Per Bjesse\, A Thousand Hours in the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Per Bjesse\, A Thousand Hours in the Sun \nJune 2nd to July 15th 2024\nReception:  June 2nd\, 1-2.30pm. Meet and greet\, no artist talk. (calendar) \nCafe 11\n435 NE Rosa Parks Way\nPortland\, OR 97211\n(503) 954-1375\nMon-Fri 7am-3.00pm.\nSat-Sun 7am-2.30pm \nSkateboarding is more than just cool tricks and daring stunts. It’s social\, it’s play\, it’s athleticism\, it’s community. Skating brings together people of all ages\, and builds bonds that often last for life. I started skating as an adult\, and in the ten years I have been doing it I have seen the people around me grow and change. The youngest person I have skated with during this time period was four years old\, and I regularly skate with people in their late 50s and early 60s. New faces have showed up\, and some skaters I used to see every day now only come out every once in a blue moon. Many of the younger people I have skated with have children of their own now\, including some folks I started seeing at the park when they were in middle school. \nThis photo series tries to show both the flashy and exciting part of skateboarding\, but also the community aspect and the ups and downs of people at my home park\, Pier park. Community and identity has always been an integral part of skating—people often identify as skaters long after they have hung up their boards\, and many stay in touch with their skate friends for life. \nThis work is dedicated to Andrew and to Cyan. Andrew\, called HDrew by his friends\, died tragically in 2018 in an urban exploration accident; Cyan is serving a multi-year prison sentence for his involvement in the Black Lives Matter protests. The proceeds of all print sales will go to Cyan’s commissary account. \ninstagram.com/perbjesse

It was a profound experience\, which not only changed my photography\, but changed the course of my life. I decided that this would be a good time to sample the photos I’ve made over these years\, with the exception of musicians in performance (which is a whole other story). \nThe earliest photos reflected my recently acquired environmental concerns\, and tried to show a pristine landscape. Aspects of abstraction started to appear in my photos\, and I was asked to join a group of former Minor White students. \nThey continued to meet monthly\, and often repeated one of his quotations: “One does not photograph something simply for ‘what it is’\, but ‘for what else it is.” \nThis meshed nicely with my growing sense of abstraction. Gradually\, man-made elements began appearing in the photos. As I was attempting to photograph a bridge in the Columbia River Gorge\, I made a Polaroid of my friend Terry Toedtemeier (photographer and curator) who was with me\, then continued to photograph the bridge in 15 sections\, including him in four. This was the beginning of my Grid-Portrait project\, which combine photos of my subject at different times and in different places\, and often includes the photographer. \nUltimately\, fleeting lighting conditions and phenomena became part of my visual language and create a common thread through the images. \nI think of the lines from the Grateful Dead song “Stella Blue”: \nAll the years combine\nThey melt into a dream\nAnd that’s how the last 45 years of my photos feel to me.”\n~ Stu Levy. \nStu Levy is a photographer living in Portland\, Oregon. He has led photography workshops on the Oregon Coast for over 30 years. He studied with Ansel Adams and was an assistant instructor for Ansel’s workshops in Yosemite and Carmel; he was also an instructor at the Ansel Adams Gallery Workshops. \nHis photographs are in many public and private collections including The Center for Creative Photography\, the George Eastman House\, the Portland Art Museum\, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta)\, Museum of Photographic Arts\, San Francisco Civic Center\, Portland Visual Chronicle and the Wilson Centre for Photography. \nHe was one of the founders of the Photography Council of the Portland Art Museum and was the Council President from 2003 to 2006. \nHe is also on the Board of Directors of Photolucida and the Pacific Northwest Photographers Archive. \nPublications: \nCranial Czar\, Eh? It is a city that that truly embodies the statement\, “You can never enter a river the same way twice.” It’s a city that has been photographed and praised over the centuries by writers\, photographers\, poets\, and painters. To me\, a photograph is merely a piece of an instant in our lives. My work for this exhibition represents what I have seen through a view finder for a fraction of time. These images are my intimate moments with a city that I love so much.” \n~ Marc McVey \nMarc McVey is a photographer living in Woodland\, WA. He has been photographing his travels for over 30 years\, looking for what he calls “accidental moments” and pairings that create their own narrative. By exploring the concept of memory\, I am interested in how our perception of a place can change over time\, particularly in relation to the complex and often intangible effects of climate change. \nI start with a single digital photograph and create 10-20 “variants” in Photoshop. I then select two to three variants and combine them together digitally into a single lenticular print. When displayed\, the viewer can move around the print and the images will fade in and out of one another creating a surreal effect.” \nChris Bennett is a photographer living in Detroit\, Michigan. He founded and was the Director of Newspace Center for Photography in Portland from 2002 to 2012 and served as its Gallery Director from 2012 to 2014. SUMMARY:Steve Dzerigian – Logic of the Subconcious: Photographic Shadow Box Collages
DESCRIPTION:Steve Dzerigian – Logic of the Subconcious: Photographic Shadow Box Collages \nAugust 2nd through the 31st\, 2024\nOpening Reception: August 2nd (during the First Friday Art Walk)\, 5 – 7:30 p.m. at NewZone Gallery\nArtist’s Talk and Discussion: Saturday\, August 3rd\, at 1 p.m. at the Emerald Art Center \nEmerald Art Center\n500 Main St\, Springfield\, OR 97477 \nNewZone Gallery Klausmeier Room\n110 E 11th Ave\, Eugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 683-0759\nTuesday through Sunday\, 12-6 p.m. First Friday till 8 p.m.\nPhotographyatoregon.org\nFree and open to the public \nA photographic exploration of time\, space\, and meaning emerges through the juxtaposition of symbolic\, image elements. \nThe works featured in this exhibition consist of three dimensionally layered\, collage constructions\, juxtaposing elements that feel they belong together much like poet\, Robinson Jeffers described his masonry building technique\, “Stone loving stone.” In the construction of his “Tor” House in Carmel\, California\, Jeffers would choose\, roll\, and maneuver each irregularly shaped stone until it felt as though it was meant to fit with its neighbors in the wall. \nRather than leading with conscious preconceptions in the beginning\, I tend to follow clues in real world exploration. When I encounter something that resonates meaningfully with my core\, an immediate progression of unforced feelings and thoughts follow. Flowing with the current or “listening” rather than “talking”\, I allow myself to drift away from conscious deliberation or internal dialogue so that the empirical and intuitive can be my guides when making images . Once enough finished examples reveal related content and form\, conscious decisions are integrated as I develop further the series\, maintaining as much of the original spontaneity and openness as possible. \nThis exhibition is titled “Logic of the Subconscious”\, because a personally symbolic pattern emerged through the elements\, placement\, and combinations chosen without preplanning. \nUsing simple\, adapted meditation techniques in the process of observation\, I follow intuitive feelings when exposing with the camera. These seem to flow from the reservoir of memory and the subconscious as quick reflexes or emerge gradually from a meditative or dreamlike state. After developing the film by hand\, a variety of techniques in “wet” darkroom printing\, toning\, occasionally hand coloring\, followed up by cutting\, pasting\, and finally shadow box framing are used to produce images that follow an unbroken spirit of connection from the initial experiences to their final presentation. \nWeaving history\, philosophy\, and the natural world with art making\, Steve Dzerigian adopted photography as his primary investigative and contemplative tool. The activities of photography and teaching it became his life’s work. He instructed field workshops for the University of California\, Santa Cruz Extension from 1977 through 2007. For the Ansel Adams Gallery Photography Workshop in Yosemite\, from 1984 to 1990\, he was an assistant instructor and served as director one of those years. In 2002\, he was co-coordinator for the “Ansel Adams Centennial Symposium in Yosemite\, Edges and Intersections: The Evolution of Change”. Devoted to facilitating art and education in Central California for more than forty-five years\, he has served as curator\, juror\, and consultant for many exhibitions\, competitions\, and media events\, in addition to teaching photography full-time at Fresno City College. \nhttps://www.stevedzerigian.com

SUMMARY:Rich Bergeman\, The Land Remembers: The Rogue River Wars
DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman\, The Land Remembers: The Rogue River Wars \nAugust 5 – October 15\, 2024 \nThe National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center\n2267 Hwy 86\nBaker City\, Oregon 97841\nhttps://www.nps.gov/places/000…\n(541) 523-1843\nOpen daily 10am-5pm \n“The Land Remembers” features over 40 black-and-white prints by Corvallis photographer Rich Bergeman that explore the Southern Oregon landscapes where the Rogue River Indian Wars were fought 170 years ago. \nOne of the bloodiest–and yet mostly overlooked–of the Indian conflicts to occur in the Oregon Territory\, the Rogue River Wars were characterized by persistent fighting between local tribes and the miners and settlers who moved into southwest Oregon in the early 1850s. \nUsing an infrared-sensitive camera\, Bergeman spent two years traveling from the Rogue Valley to the Oregon Coast to photograph scenes at or near the sites of battles\, peace parlays\, massacres and other significant events that occurred during the war years of 1851-56. Bergeman said his goal was not to document specific historic sites\, but rather “to bring the largely forgotten war back into our collective consciousness through a reflective study of the landscapes that played host to those tragic events.” \nIn addition to the photographs\, the story of the war years is retold through wall text\, maps and gallery guides\, as well as an accompanying book available in the Lone Pine Mercantile at the Interpretive Center. \nThe source of the conflict was the convergence of two separate events–the discovery of gold in the region and the passage of the Oregon Donation Land Claim Act. The various tribes who had populated the area for centuries saw their homelands suddenly invaded as settlers and miners streamed in. Conflict inevitably followed\, with a cycle of fighting and truces between 1851 and 1854 that eventually erupted into all-out war involving the U.S. Army. It finally ended in 1856 with the forced removal of the Rogue Valley and South Coast tribes to reservations at Siletz and Grand Ronde. \nBergeman is a retired instructor of journalism and photography at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. The 75-year-old photographer has been exhibiting his work throughout the Northwest since the 1980s. Over the past two decades he has focused primarily on portraying forgotten Northwest histories through photographs of what’s been left behind. His portfolios can be seen at richbergeman.zenfolio.com\, and in book form at blurb.com

SUMMARY:Ken Hochfeld - Precipice
DESCRIPTION:Ken Hochfeld – Precipice \nAugust 6 – September 20 \nWalters Cultural Arts Center\n527 E. Main Street\nHillsboro\, Oregon 97124\nThe Walters Gallery is free and open from 9 am to 9 pm\, Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm\, Fridays.\nhttps://www.hillsboro-oregon.g… \nFeaturing: Portland photographer Ken Hochfeld\, Pacific Northwest collage and mixed media artists Kit S. Carlton\, Sam Marroquin\, and Tyler Brumfield. \nThese four artists share diverse perspectives on the impact of the human relationship with our fragile and changing environment. \nHochfeld’s photographs will be selections from his collection “Rock(s)”\, a tribute to Terry Toedtemeier. \n“Terry Toedtemeier comes to the minds of Pacific Northwest photographers who think about photographs of basalt. Terry’s love for the land\, knowledge of geology\, and his personal expressions have had a meaningful impact on me as an artist. This work represents a tribute to a friendship I regrettably never experienced. \nBasalt is an extrusive igneous rock that flooded the Pacific Northwest 17 to 6 million years ago. Best known for dramatic columns\, we also see its subsequent forms in the Pacific Northwest\, much of which have been revealed as a result of the great Missoula floods that swept through eastern Washington and the Columbia River Gorge various times more than 12\,000 years ago. Dark gray and black in color and rich in an array of tones and shapes\, I think basalt tells its stories best in bright sun. Additionally\, after much of the year under water\, lakeside basalt\, when exposed to the summer sun takes on an unusual and rich light gray hue. Basalt can also exhibit fantastic color derived from lichens and moss that find special places to thrive. Madrone Wall Park near the Clackamas River in Carver\, Oregon is a prime place to see these surreal colors at their very finest. \nOthers have written about rocks in ways that best describe my thoughts while making these images: \n“I take another look at the stone\, run my fingertip over the meticulous brushstrokes\, and realize that nothing ever returns to time unless it is stored in mute\, voiceless objects; rocks do tell tales after all.”\nStefan Hertmans\, War and Turpentine \n“Everything dreams. The play of form\, of being\, is the dreaming of substance. Rocks have their dreams\, and the earth changes….”\nUrsula K. Le Guin\, The Lathe of Heaven \n\nWith this work I hope to share the pure artistry\, the form\, the brushstrokes\, and the various tales and dreams of Rock(s) for us all to imagine. I like to think Terry would have approved.” \nKen Hochfeld \nwww.kenhochfeld.com

DESCRIPTION:Steve Anchell – Portland Street Photography Workshop \nFriday\, Saturday\, Sunday\, August 9 – 11\, 2024 (3 sessions)\n6:00 PM – 9:00 PM \nThe Oregon School of Arts & The Gallery\n2185 SW Park Pl\, Portland OR 97205\n(503)228-0706 | osartists.org\nand\nOn-site \n$395 ($455 non-members) \n“Your street photography Workshop was my first experience attending a photography workshop AND what a positive experience it was! Your knowledge and skill were adeptly shared and provided an exceptional learning opportunity.” ~Daniel Chavez\, Tucson\, Ariz. \nStreet photography is a genre that records unmediated chance encounters and random incidents in public places. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers\, often without their knowledge. Street photographers do not necessarily have a social purpose but often prefer isolating and capturing moments that might go unnoticed. The street photographer is an outsider\, a voyeur in the true sense\, in that they watch and wait until the right moment occurs and capture it using a camera. \nThe workshop will begin Friday evening with a presentation that will guide you through many techniques and pitfalls of creating successful street photography\, followed by a Q&A session. On Saturday and Sunday mornings\, we will visit different areas of Portland to practice street photography with Steve’s guidance. In the afternoons\, we will critique your previous photographs and work on the ones you captured during the weekend. \nThis workshop is designed for all levels of photography enthusiasts\, from beginners to professionals. You don’t need any prior experience or special equipment. It’s about engaging and creating meaningful images of people you’ve never met and likely won’t meet again. Whether you have a pro camera or a cell phone\, film or digital\, you’re welcome. Steve works with both a Sony a7R II and an iPhone\, so you’re in good hands regardless of your gear. \nSteve Anchell has taught street and documentary photography for the International Center of Photography in NYC\, Santa Fe Photography Workshops\, and Oregon State University. In the ’00s\, he led street photography workshops in Portland for the Portland Photographers’ Forum (PPF). He has been leading street photography workshops in Cuba since 2001. \nFor more information\, go to Portland Street Photography Workshop

LightBox invites you to join us as open the exhibit featuring 33 photographers from around the World using analog process in their work. Complete show info is on the LightBox website\, http://lightbox-photographic.c…. \nAt the dawn of photography our hopes and sights were set on finding the science that would allow us to produce an image with light and to display the latent image. It was the inquisitive scientific mind\, the human hand and creative ideas that furthered the Art of Photography. In the world of today current photographic technology and past process discoveries are merging and we see creative photographic works that use both modern resources and the touch of the human hand with historical photographic processes. \nLightBox Photographic Gallery and Analog Forever Magazine have forged a partnership with The Analog Forever Exhibit. We wish to celebrate the lessons we have learned\, the processes we have discovered and the paths we have forged in the Inaugural Analog Forever Gallery Exhibit. The work in this exhibit all includes an analog element of photographic means. It can start in an analog manner or medium or it may include any of the same throughout the process\, or just the final piece may be a analog photographic print. There must be at least one analog element in the creative process. \nOur hope for the exhibition is that stirs the soul and the senses.

LightBox invites you to see the incredible hand made prints and masterful work. the night with LightBox Guild member Michael puff from Montatra Ca. will to be at the opening of the exhibit. Complete show info is on the LightBox website\, http://lightbox-photographic.c…. \n“Since 2011\, I have been making handmade prints using the 19th century platinum/palladium process. Most recently I have wanted to introduce color into my prints without abandoning the beauty of the platinum/palladium process. This collection is primarily printed using two different techniques which separate the color from the black in an image. Black is printed with platinum/palladium while color is printed with the 19th century single or tri-color gum bichromate process or printed using modern digital archival pigment inks. Platinum/palladium over archival pigment ink requires two layers for each print while gum bichromate over platinum/palladium can require four to six layers for each print. This has been a joyful exploration of color.” ~ Michael Puff \n“Color is my daylong obsession\, joy\, and torment.” ― Claude Monet \nMichael Puff is a photographer living in Montara\, CA. He began using photography as his primary artistic expression in 2004. Puff’s work has been exhibited at the LightBox Photographic Gallery\, Astoria\, OR; de Young Museum\, San Francisco\, CA; Ryan Gallery at Art Intersection\, Gilbert\, AZ; Duncan Miller Gallery\, Los Angeles\, CA and Center for Photographic Art\, Carmel\, CA. His work is included in the book Digital Negatives with QuadToneRIP published in 2021 by Focal Press. Michael Puff is a proud member of the LightBox Photographic Gallery Guild.

SUMMARY:Pro Photo Supply - Cyanotypes a DIY Workshop with Claudia Hollister
DESCRIPTION:Pro Photo Supply – Cyanotypes a DIY Workshop with Claudia Hollister \nSaturday August 31st 11am-3pm \nPro Photo Supply Event Center\n1801 NW Northrup St\, Portland\, OR 97209\n503-517-3646\nMon-Friday 8am-5pm\nwww.prophotosupply.com \n\nPro Photo Supply is teaming up with Blue Sky Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts and local artist Claudia Hollister to offer this fun and unique workshop where you’ll get a hands-on lesson in creating your own cyanotypes! \nWhat is a cyanotype? \nCyanotype prints are an exciting non-toxic\, alternative photographic process using light-sensitive iron salts and UV light to develop a blue-colored image. Cyanotype prints have no emulsion\, instead\, the light-sensitive iron salts have been infused into the paper fibers while a negative film placed on the sensitized paper is exposed to UV light. Once the image has finished being exposed it must be washed out in water to reveal a positive image. The blues are unique to this process and can’t be duplicated in any other medium. \nThe cyanotype process was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 to create architectural blueprints. Before the invention of photography\, scientists utilized detailed descriptions and other artistic processes (typically illustrations or engravings) to record botanical specimens. In 1843\, Anna Atkins printed the first cyanotype prints documenting plant and sea life. Anna self-published her detailed and meticulous botanical images using the cyanotype photographic process in her 1843 book\, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. With a limited number of copies\, it was the first book ever to be printed and illustrated by photography. \nAbout this Class \nThis is a 4-hour workshop designed to take you through the process of creating your own photographic cyanotype prints. In this workshop\, you will learn how to create both a positive and negative transparency film from a photograph. \nYou will learn what photographs are likely to give you a successful cyanotype print. We use the word “likely” since the process is not an exact science. Great photographs do not always translate into great cyanotype prints. \nhttps://www.blueskygallery.org… \nhttps://www.claudiahollister.c…

SUMMARY:Kris Davidson\, American Timescapes
DESCRIPTION:Kris Davidson\, American Timescapes\n \nOpen/Close: October 4th\, 2024 – November 27th\, 2024\nOpening Reception l Artist Talk: October 4th\, 2024 6-8pm \nPUSHDOT STUDIO\n2505 SE 11th Avenue\, Suite 104\nPortland\, OR 97202\n503.224.5925 \nGallery Hours: Mon-Fri. 8:30am to 5:00pm\, free admission \nKris Davidson | AMERICAN TIMESCAPES \nStories are the pillars of the self\, revealing who we have been\, who we are\, and who we are becoming — yet they remain intangible\, sliding across time and shapeshifting between fact and fiction. In my work\, I am primarily concerned with the translation of stories across time\, an investigation that draws me toward the concept of deep time. Through my photographic collages — slicing and reorganizing slivers of frozen time — I explore how our stories might inhabit the past\, present\, and future simultaneously. \nIn “American Timescapes\,” I address the ephemerality of the American experience across deep time. Each piece in this series is constructed from three separate photographs of a landscape or region\, taken minutes\, hours\, days\, or even years apart. These images are then cut\, folded\, and combined to form 3-dimensional photo sculptures that visualize a compressing of time. \nAs we confront the realities of climate change and accelerate toward numerous technological breakthroughs — from gene editing to advances in AI and expanded space exploration — the narratives we create will shape who we are becoming. “American Timescapes” is an invitation to reflect on our relationship with all of time — the past\, the present\, and the deep future — and to reconsider how we are crafting the story of our existence. \nKris Davidson\, a native of Sweden\, spent her childhood between the Scandinavian subarctic and Texas. She spent 15 years as an editorial photographer before transitioning to an artistic practice that explores how stories are translated across the past\, present\, and future. Using collage and mixed media on photographic prints\, Kris delves into storytelling and memory across deep time. \nHer photography has been featured in National Geographic Traveler\, Lonely Planet Traveler\, and other major publications. Prior to her photography career\, Kris worked as a branding professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for eight years. She is also an experienced educator\, having collaborated with the National Geographic Society and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. \nKris holds a BA from Loyola University in New Orleans and is currently pursuing an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, expected in 2025. She is based in Seattle\, Washington. \nwww.krisdavidson.com
