Please join Sam and enjoy a Saturday in Astoria with us! \nFrom those bulls drawn on cave walls in Lascaux over 15\,000 years ago\, to Greek and Roman artists\, to artists of the Renaissance like DaVinci and Michelangelo\, concept and composition have always been the first and foremost considerations in the creative process. “Composition”\, Edward Weston famously said\, “is the strongest way of seeing”. But what does that even mean? This class answers that question.\nOver the long arc of art history\, certain principles of composition have evolved. These are not rules\, as Art has no rules. (Sorry\, Rule of Thirds) Instead\, we have tools of composition which\, when combined with your own creativity\, distinguish strong\, compelling images from those Dorothea Lange called “one lookers”.\nAs photographers- the new kids on the block- you will learn what those tools are\, and how to apply them. Equally important\, you will learn why they appeal to the brain and the human sense of perception. There will be no recitation of stale formulas. Instead\, you will learn how to think about compositions\, using visual learning. Classic works of art and strong photographs will illustrate by example how the tools were used successfully\, and how you can apply those same tools. You will learn a workflow process guaranteed to\nproduce consistently stronger images\, or your money back\, no questions asked. She began exploring the infrared spectrum in 2018\, first in black-and-white and more recently in color. Much of her work on display in the SSH Gallery focuses on eliciting color and emotion from landscape scenes that resemble oil and watercolor paintings\, often flirting with abstraction. \nO’Brien works primarily in black-and-white as she seeks out landscapes that “invite the viewer to step into the scene\,” as she puts it. “In the last few years I have been enamored with infrared photography due to the other-worldliness and magical quality that I find I can’t get in a straight black-and-white or color photograph.” A retired mental health therapist\, O’Brien lives in Creswell. \nBoth use digital cameras that have been converted to capture varying ranges of the infrared spectrum\, which lies just beyond the visible range of light and is thus invisible to the human eye.

After all\, I was healthy and I was just like my father\, who lived a good life to age 96. \nOn the evening of February 28\, 2020\, after cutting my finger while preparing dinner\, I began a year long struggle to survive and recover from a near fatal Staph MRSA bacterial infection. I was eventually given no better than a 10% chance of survival. \nAfter collapsing at home and being brought to emergency\, doctors searched for a treatment for the antibiotic resistant infection as it continued to rage. It had entered my bloodstream and overtook my entire body. This would eventually result in open heart surgery mitral valve replacement\, stroke\, kidney dialysis and other surgeries. I could not walk or speak and have little memory of these events. \nDuring the months of my recovery memories of the Oregon Coast filled my mind and I dreamed of once again walking the beach. Over the past three years my daughters Caroline and Cathy have shared the story of my illness and survival with me. These images are a collaboration with them. I’ve combined my own photos captured on my many visits to the Oregon Coast with photographs taken by my daughters during my illness.\nI would not have survived without the love and fierce support of my beautiful family. \nThe exhibit runs from October 14 through November 8\, 2023. His interest in photography goes back to the late 1970s when he took classes with master printer George Tice and fashion photographer Victor Steinhart in New York City. During that time he has been a pioneer in several alternative approaches and process in the field\, from hand-colored silver prints and photo-collages in his early years\, to toy camera and pinhole photography in mid-career\, and most recently intentional camera movement (ICM) images made with his phone. \n“While the landscape has always been at the core of my work\, the images are more about an impression or dream remembered\, rather than pure descriptive fact\,” he said. “Over the years I have become more interested in the essence of a place than the pure description.” \nThe Oregon native has had a life-long interest in photographing the eastern side of the state\, and has assisted in four summer workshops conducted by the University of Oregon Photography Department in the Malheur and Steens Mountain country. From 1994 to 2016 he taught darkroom skills\, alternative process\, and digital photography courses at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. \nNorlin was born in Salem and grew up in Roseburg\, then received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Central Washington University in Ellensburg\, Wash. After 20 years as a darkroom technician and fine art photographer\, including several years with a studio in the Crees Building in downtown Corvallis\, he returned to the classroom at the University of Oregon to earn a Masters in Fine Arts in 1993. While at the UofO he worked as a teaching assistant under Profs. Dan Powell and Terri Warpinski. \nThroughout that time Norlin maintained an active exhibition career\, participating in solo\, group and juried shows from Oregon to New York. He has also curated exhibits for galleries at LBCC and the Benton County Historical Museum. He is a founding member of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild based in Corvallis and a former member of Gallery Calapooia in Albany. \nFour collections of his work have been compiled in self-published books\, including “Some Twenty Odd Images” in 2009\, “Desert Dance” in 2010\, “Memories\, Metaphors\, Manifestations” in 2012\, and “Illuminations” in 2013. But if one ventures away from the “city on display\,” into the districts that rarely see tourists\, one finds many areas that have not been appreciably restored or renovated since before the Second World War. \nThere\, one can encounter remnants of the bourgeois opulence of the late 19th and early 20th centuries intermixed with post-war architecture and more modern designs. These scenes\, preserved in various states of repair\, bear witness to a society and lifestyle that has largely vanished. These things still stand\, cloaked with their patina of time\, not because they have been maintained\, but rather due to lack of resources\, reluctance to change\, neglect or simply because they were robust and useful enough to survive. \n“When I moved to Vienna in the mid-1980s\, I became fascinated with these ghosts from the past. I scoured the back streets and the far reaches of the city for them\, on my bicycle with my large-format camera strapped to my back. These images span the 30 years I spent there. They show a part of the city that I came to know and love. Vienna is still becoming a modern metropolis. These places\, which once embodied the character of the older city and its inhabitants\, are gradually being renovated or replaced by newer\, more homogeneous designs. Many of these scenes no longer exist\, having been demolished or rebuilt in the years since my photographs were made. I look on them with a bittersweet nostalgia.” \nDoremus works exclusively in “analog photography\,” using large-format cameras\, film\, and making silver-gelatin prints in the darkroom using traditional techniques. The road to that lofty ambition is living with simplicity\, minimalism\, and non-attachment to ego and materialism. It also means living with the awareness that all we really have in our lives is the present moment\, referred to as “tada ima”\, only now. When that mental state is achieved\, it creates a feeling of oneness and connection with the universe\, and is the well spring to the inherent joy\, happiness\, and inner peace within each and every one of us. I have attempted to reveal that mental state visually with this series called “Zenscapes”. My hope is that from your looking at the images I am able to share with you a bit of the peace and joy I felt while making them.” Sam Blair \nSam has a B.A. degree in English from the University of Denver\, and a J.D. degree from Lewis and Clark College of Law. He was a civil litigator for 35 years\, with offices in Oregon and Hawaii. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Willamette University College of Law in Salem\, Or. He is afflicted with wanderlust\, and retired from practicing Law to pursue his passion of travel and fine art photography. As a self taught photographer\, he has explored over 90 countries. His mission is to capture “the essence of things” in other cultures\, beaches\, and the fascinating homo sapien. He is a haiku poet. His poems have been published in multiple literary anthologies and journals. Sam is a longtime student of Zen Buddhism\, and trained in the Japanese martial art of Aikido\, where he earned a Black Belt. We hope everyone is ready to leave the storm behind and spend the afternoon in Astoria at the rescheduled opening Party! \nPhotography Happens is a collaborative exhibition by Sarah Abbott and Rachel Wolf that explores the ways in which photography has profoundly inspired two individual practices. This exhibition showcases two artists’ very different approaches to their making of photographs\, but punctuates their interests in parallel themes of fragmentation\, tension between subject and object\, disruption on the photographic plane\, and concepts of the everyday and perception. Together\, Abbott and Wolf engage in a dialogue that transcends the ordinary and challenges the conventional. \n  \nSarah Abbott (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Portland Oregon. She earned her BA in Studio Arts with a minor in Psychology from San Francisco State University\, and her MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Together with three MFA colleagues\, she co-founded FO(u)RT Collective\, an interdisciplinary art collective dedicated to collaboration\, critical discourse\, and collective exhibitions.\nAbbott’s art practice is emphatically centered around photography and the medium’s ability to promote pleasure in seeing everyday surroundings in new ways. Domestic subjects\, scenes and situations are captured with an eager and exploratory lens\, printed\, and oftentimes manipulated. Using photography in tandem with mediums such as collage\, sculpture\, bookbinding\, sewing and embroidery\, she experiments with the surface of the printed image to explore what happens when subject and content differ and inject complexity in seemingly simple images of everyday subjects. Abbott currently exhibits locally\, nationally\, and internationally.\n—\nRachel Wolf (she/her) is a professional photographer specializing in camera-less photography\, alternative/antique processes\, and the creation of immersive environments through light-based installations. Born and raised in Alaska\, Wolf’s work is profoundly shaped by the interplay of light and its absence in her surroundings. Her direct encounters with the aurora borealis fueled a deep appreciation for the transcendent qualities of light\, serving as both muse and focal point in her artistic practice.\nAs an educator and speaker\, Wolf delights in inspiring others by sharing her passion for light and photography. She champions the collaborative nature of art and its potential for community-building. Wolf is a co-founder of FO(u)RT Collective\, a collaborative multi-disciplinary arts group dedicated to critical discourse and creating\, curating\, and organizing exhibitions and events. Additionally\, as an engaged member of The Guild at LightBox Photographic Gallery\, Wolf actively contributes to the group’s mission of cultivating an appreciation for diverse photography processes through exhibitions\, workshops\, and collaborative endeavors.\nWolf’s work has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally\, with exhibitions spanning Germany\, Hungary\, Canada\, New York\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Cincinnati\, Seattle\, and Portland. DESCRIPTION:Per Bjesse\, The Swim Cure \nOpening reception January 13th 6-8pm (calendar)\nJanuary 13th-March 13th \nBlue Moon Camera\n8417 N Lombard\nPortland\, OR 97203 \nClinical depression is a condition that is on a sharp rise with devastating societal and personal costs. The disease is associated with shame\, which often becomes a hurdle for those seeking help. The cyclical nature of gradual improvements and backslides can also make depression an exhausting ordeal that can wear out the limited support systems around the afflicted\, leaving them isolated. The photographs in this exhibition were taken over one year as I was trying to deal with my depression and propensity to stay house bound by regularly meeting up with friends and family for swimming. My experience is projected onto the people in my community that I leaned on as a support system\, and through the lens of the edges of rivers\, lakes\, and seas we visited together while I was trying to feel better. For me\, the water is a place where I have to muster up the courage to step in\, submerge myself\, and return to shore. It is the place all life on earth came from\, but also a place where you can drown. \n

When Hillary Clinton used the phrase in her 1995 speech at the United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing\, it quickly became the rallying cry for the international women’s movement. The message that empowering women ultimately empowers all of humanity resonated with particular fervor on January 21\, 2017\, when women’s rights advocates organized the first Women’s March on Washington\, giving rise to concurrent “sister” marches in major cities in the US and throughout the world. The event supported gender equality and many other important social issues that were expected to suffer under the newly inaugurated US President. The 2017 Women’s March was the largest single-day demonstration in US history\, and it has now become an important annual event. The photos in this exhibit were made by three women who participated in the Women’s March in three cities in the Pacific Northwest: Kathy Radie in Seattle\, WA\, and Pat Rose in Portland\, OR\, during the inaugural march on January 21\, 2017\, and Johanna King in Port Townsend\, WA\, during the first anniversary march on January 20\, 2018. \nJohanna King is a Portland-based photographer who likes to do contextual portraits of both people and animals. She is a veteran traveler\, a serious birder and a natural history buff\, pastimes that have provided excellent opportunities for her photography. She spent her working career as a clinical psychologist\, and perhaps because of that\, she loves to make photographs that have a narrative thread. She wants each of her images to tell a story and to engage the viewer in speculation about why the photographs were made\, what is happening and what will happen next. Her work has been shown in a number of galleries in the Pacific Northwest. \nKathy Radie currently splits her time between Oregon and Alaska\, two of the many places that have shaped her life view and photographic eye. Her images have found a home in juried art shows\, commissions for one percent for the arts\, and the permanent collection at the University of Alaska Museum. She studied Fine Art Photography and History of Photography at the University of Iowa. Her work includes landscape\, portrait\, abstract and street photography. I had a committed meditation and study practice\, and was the manager (abott) caring for the grounds and facilities. I then was free to follow my heart which led me to the Portland Japanese Garden which renewed my meditation and study practices in a refreshing and profound way. What is IT that has inspired me to “Walk The Garden” 21 times in the past year? For me IT has been an aesthetic experience as I have come to see and feel the spirit of the architecture and the love and care of an envisioned environment–a microcosm–of Harmony and Beauty that regards Nature as sacred. Gender violence\, sexual stereotypes\, and the portrayal of women in the media and popular culture feed and perpetuate this fear in our society. This collaborative photo-based installation explores vulnerability and the artist’s relationship to it as women. The work looks at the emotional side of this subject and how these forces shape the lives and behavior of women\, often in subtle ways\, that become ingrained and normalized as part of their worldview. \nIn this immersive installation\, the viewer becomes the voyeur\, peeping through an exterior window of a house before entering the space. The exhibition combines projected images\, large photographic fabric panels and sound. The images reflect the relationship between being watched and objectified and how women present their identities to the world. The photographs and projections on semi-transparent layers combine and interplay as the viewer moves through the piece\, building an intimate space for reflection. \nThe artists Jan Cook and Pamela Chipman created this installation together in an artist residency in Portland\, OR. They are white cisgender women whose own experiences and concerns with safety and consent propelled them to make this body of work. In confronting this underlying fear\, they want to call attention to and to create discussion and change around these issues. \nJan Cook is a Seattle artist who works with photo-based imagery to examine the ideas that run through our collective unconscious and tie us together in our humanity. Pamela Chipman is a Portland\, Oregon based visual artist who explores themes of memory\, domesticity and femininity. She creates work that speaks to the history\, strengths and struggles of women in our culture. \n“This work is hauntingly beautiful. The wheat harvest was for the most part finished. What remained were empty fields and the tracks of the harvesting machinery. The area is rolling hills with the harvest machine tracks as level as possible. These tracks leave a wonderful pattern of curves. \nI shot planning for black and white images\, and toned them in processing. I visualize my photographs with an eye for graphic composition\, impact\, and interest. My intent is to let the viewer smile\, think\, and appreciate a vision of the world that may be unique to them. \nThis series of images is a collection of toned Black & White landscape photographs. Carbon transfer prints and all the work in this exhibit are created by my hand. They are pure interpretations of light and the ideas that give me so much joy. I believe finding balance in one’s life and work leads to a deeper understanding of one’s self. This visual journey which I present\, shows what I like to call the “balance” in my work. There will be some surprises and some favorites but I wanted to show the diversity of my work of fifty years. I wanted to highlight some of my largest carbon prints\, which are difficult to create and many of these have not been seen before. Many believe me to be the “Tree Guy\,” which of course I am; but there is more to me and my world\, for I am much more than just the “Tree Guy. I am a carbon transfer specialist\, camera builder\, bookbinder\, publisher and educator. My historic process work helps me stay pure to my belief that what comes from my heart will show up on film and paper.” ~ Jim Fitzgerald \nJim’s love affair with the trees and the natural world began at a young age. In his youth\, family trips to Yosemite\, Sequoia and the Oregon Coast helped set him on his artistic path which he follows today.
