SUMMARY:Michael Strain "Agua – Water Infrastructure - Oaxaca\, Chiapas\, Guanajuato\, Yucatán and Guatemala"
DESCRIPTION:Michael Strain “Agua – Water Infrastructure –\nOaxaca\, Chiapas\, Guanajuato\, Yucatán and Guatemala” \nJanuary 4 – February 27\, 2025\nArtist reception on January 4 from 1-4 pm. \n\nThe O’Brien Photo Gallery\n2833 Willamette\, Ste. B.\nEugene\, OR 97405\nPhone: (541) 729-3572\nOpen weekdays from 1-5 pm.\nCall to be sure we’re open or to makes special viewing arrangements.\nhttps://www.waltobrien.net/the… \nThese images are abstracts from our built environment “infrastructure” highlighting the means of water distribution in places where I’ve travelled including Oaxaca\, Chiapas\, Guanajuato\, and the Yucatan in Mexico\, and the Sololá (Lake Atitlan) Department of Guatemala. \nThe viewer is invited to consider the objects in the photograph as compositional elements… rather than being the subject of the photograph per se. In this approach the intended subject is the composition itself\, comprised of the geometrical\, texture\, color relationships\, and cultural associations of the various objects. The photograph is an “abstract” or sample seen from a particular point of view. \nHowever\, implicit in the series is recognition of the global challenges and equity of obtaining safe drinking water and the illustration of some of the means by which people have adapted. \nThese photographs in this group were all taken with an iPhone. \nGrowing up in Montana\, Michael Strain was first introduced to photography and darkroom work by his grandmother at about age eight. In college he managed the darkroom in his dorm while narrowly missing the popular photography courses taught at MIT by Minor White. In the mid-1970’s he began working with large format cameras and produced a series of one-of-a-kind 8×10 color Polaroid images taken with a home-built view camera. \nRecently retired as an instrumentation scientist at the University of Oregon\, Strain has renewed his photographic efforts\, but now using an iPhone as a primary tool. The phone is kind of like a miniature view camera with a wide-angle lens. It is appealing because of its small\, inconspicuous size making it perfect for international travel and spontaneity. Modern ink-jet printers capture the crisp\, brilliant colors that drew him to the color Polaroid medium of days gone by. \nhttps://www.photozonegallery.c… \nEmail: michael.strain@gmail.com \nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/micha… \n

SUMMARY:Jim Lommasson\, What I Carry: A collaborative photo+writing storytelling project with Portland’s Street Community
DESCRIPTION:Jim Lommasson\, What I Carry: A collaborative photo+writing storytelling project with Portland’s Street Community \nOPEN/CLOSE: January 18 – March 15\, 2025\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, January 18\, 2-4 pm \nMultnomah County Central Library Collins Gallery\n801 SW 10th Avenue\,\nPortland\, OR 97205\n(503) 988-5123\nhttps://multcolib.org/hours-an… \nGallery Hours:\n• Monday: 10 am-6 pm\n• Tuesday: 12 pm-8 pm\n• Wednesday: 12 pm-8 pm\n• Thursday: 10 am-6 pm\n• Friday: 10 am-6 pm\n• Saturday: 10 am-6 pm\n• Sunday: 12 pm-6 pm\nfree admission \nWhat I Carry: A collaborative photo+writing storytelling project with Portland’s Street Community. \nSince 2010\, I have focused my work on collaborative photo+writing projects with communities displaced from their homes and their their homelands.\nThese projects encompass the stories of refugees\, genocide\, and Holocaust survivors who bear the burdens of the diaspora. \nMy “What We Carried” projects explore themes of departure and the enduring impact it leaves behind. \nEach project deepens my connection with the communities with whom I collaborate. “what i carry” focuses on Portland’s un-housed community.\nThis project with members of our community aims to remind us that any of us could find ourselves in need of shelter should one or two circumstances in our lives shift. \nThrough this process of personal storytelling with object/photographs with the participants’ handwriting\, giving voice to the those who are rarely heard we aspire to build a sense of community and remind us that we are all one family. \nIt’s been said that my What We Carried projects “humanize” the refugee. \nBut it’s not the refugee (or the homeless person) that needs to be humanized\, \n…it is us.\n– Jim Lommasson \nhttps://lommasson-resume.blogs… \nThank You RACC + Street Roots Community + Multnomah County Central Library + PLACE

SUMMARY:Marcieline Novatore: Come Worry With Me
DESCRIPTION:Marcieline Novatore: Come Worry With Me \nFebruary 1 through February 28\, 2025\nArtist reception and book release party: February 1 \nFranklin Foto\n8953 N Lombard St\, Portland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \nIn this broken world\, we find hope in the worry we have\, because we’re bleak\, uncertain\, and somehow still beautiful. These photos are all we have left\, changing with every passing second\, and they should make you worry—worry with everything you’ve ever desired\, regretted\, feared\, and even hoped for. You can’t feel one without the other. Hope and worry—one feeds the other. For too long\, we’ve only shown the happy photographs\, pretending everything’s fine. Now\, we need to capture the uneasy lives\, tiredness and the things we’ve tried to ignore. To forget them would be to forget what’s left of us. So\, hold on tight to each other\, show up when it counts\, because it’s the stubborn hope that can tear the crummy monsters down. The old record plays\, its needle stretching out of tune\, dust rising with every spin. We watch the sun sink on our broken horizon\, the last light exposing everything we’ve been too blind to see. Our stubborn hope trumps lazy greed. Hope and worry—they’re tangled up now\, and all you have to do is look around to understand that truth. \nArtist Website: https://mzana.bigcartel.com/pr…

SUMMARY:Jim Curnyn: San Joaquin Valley Fog - Fresno California
DESCRIPTION:Jim Curnyn: San Joaquin Valley Fog – Fresno California \nFebruary 1st – 27th\, 2025 \nOpening Reception\, Friday\, February 7th from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.\nRefreshments served \n\nDot Dotson’s Gallery\n1886 Willamette St.\, Eugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 485-1771\nMonday through Friday\, 10 am – 5:30 pm\, Saturday 10 am – 1 pm\ndotdotsons.com\nFree and open to the public \nPhotographer\, Jim Curnyn’s\, use of fog as a light source is well documented in this photography exhibit. In the use of day fog you will notice the blocking out of unwanted background\, objects in the middle ground appear as various shades of grey\, and the isolated subject stands out. In this exhibit are rural\, farm\, city\, and railroad themes with a speeding Amtrak Passenger train frozen on a railroad bridge with the background blocked out\, empty railroad tracks at the downtown Fresno Amtrak Station\, various city street scenes under foggy weather\, some scenes of people in fog\, and some attention given to rural farm scenes. \nSpectrum Art Gallery member\, Jim Curnyn\, is a Fresno based fine art photographer whose work encompasses cityscapes\, farm scenes\, architecture\, railroad environment\, Fresno historical landmarks\, Washington DC Area\, West Virginia and France. \nMuch of his work is done in dense fog as can be seen in this exhibit at the Dot Dotsons Gallery. Jim incorporates the use of fog in his photographs as a means to isolate his subject by blocking out the unwanted background\, muting distant objects into various shades of grey forms\, causing the viewer’s eye to go to the isolated subject. Photographs made in foggy conditions create mood and can become a secondary subject to the photograph itself. \njimcurnynphotography.com

SUMMARY:Phil Bard: American Desert
DESCRIPTION:Phil Bard: American Desert \nFebruary 6th -28th\nFirst Thursday Feb. 6 until 7:45PM\nReception and Artist’s Talk Saturday February 8th 1:30-4PM\nArtist’s Talk at 2PM \nAugen Gallery\n716 NW Davis St\nPortland\, OR 97209\nTuesday-Saturday 11-5PM\n503 546-5056\naugengallery.com \nMost of America west of the Rockies is covered with desert. With few exceptions it is a stark and brittle place\, and things that live there must be on their game at all times in order to survive. Though it appears battle hardened\, the desert itself is ironically fragile. It requires years to heal from wounds\, whether delivered by harsh weather or by man’s clumsiness. One particular part of the western desert\, the Colorado Plateau\, is completely unique in the world. There are endless sculpted red rock canyons and towers and massive stacks of varying rock layers\, geologic timelines of the region’s diverse history. It is a humbling experience to travel there. We as Americans are blessed to be caretakers of this phenomenal place\, and it is up to us to make sure that while we walk and live on it\, we remain inspired by its beauty and uniqueness\, and tread accordingly. \nI began producing photographs in my dad’s darkroom at age 8\, which was essentially the kitchen at our house with the windows covered. It was lots of work but fun and it fostered in me a love of image making. Later\, after working for years in a different trade\, I found my way to photography school and eventually a career as a commercial photographer. All along I had been producing my own work\, landscapes in black and white. In 2000 when the first serious digital cameras and printers began to appear\, I began to move away from shooting film and using large format cameras for that work. As the rest of the world eventually went digital\, I opened my own digital imaging business in Portland and did scanning and printing for a variety of businesses and artists until retiring in 2016. Today I consider myself fortunate to be able to travel to places that inspire and attempt to live once again in the world of an 8 year old. \nPhil Bard Photography\nhttps://philbard.com\nphil@philbard.com

SUMMARY:A Clothesline show by students of Walt O'Brien's Platinum Classes
DESCRIPTION:A Clothesline show by students of Walt O’Brien’s Platinum Classes \nShowing from March 7 to March 28\nReception on First Friday\, March 7 from 5:30 – 8:00 pm (calendar). \nFramin’ Artworks\n505 High Street\nEugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 683-8111\nOpen Monday – Friday 10-5\, Saturday 10-3\nhttps://framinartworks.com/ \nAround June of 2017 Walt O’Brien began teaching the old process of platinum/palladium printing at his lab. The class has 2 to 3 students per class. Since then there have been 35 students\, many of which have taken the class multiple times. In 2019 Walt’s gallery hosted a clothesline show of student work up to that point. \nRecently\, Framin’ Artworks invited Walt’s students to have a clothesline show in their gallery in downtown Eugene. 15 to 20 students will be represented in the show and it will be on the first Friday Art Walk of Eugene. \nWalt will be there to answer questions and a video presentation by Bostick and Sullivan will demonstrate the process. Platinum/Palladium printing has been done since the late 1800’s and is still practiced by many photographers. \nWalt continues to offer the class on a regular basis. Students learn how to make a digital negative\, coat emulsions\, control contrast\, expose and process prints using a modified printing method. Bostick and Sullivan of Santa Fe New Mexico is one of the suppliers of materials and has modified the process in recent years. Walt uses their newer process to teach the class. \nO’Brien Photo Imaging is located at 2833 Willamette in Eugene. Contact Walt for more information at: picmac1945@gmail.com or visit his website at \nhttps://www.waltobrien.net/cus….

SUMMARY:“InSight” - An Exhibit of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild
DESCRIPTION:“InSight” – An Exhibit of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild \nMarch 12 through April 25\, 2025\nReception Friday March 14\, 5:30 – 7:30pm (calendar) \nThe Giustina Gallery at The LaSells Stewart Center\n875 SW 26th St.\nCorvallis\, OR 97331 \n541-737-9315\nhttps://lasells.oregonstate.ed…\nhours: 8am-5pm weekdays and evenings during scheduled events \nFor its 13th biennial exhibit at the LaSells Stewart Center\, members of the PhotoArts Guild were asked to respond to the theme\, “InSight\,” suggesting not only what is in a photographer’s field of vision\, but also what lies more deeply behind the scenes. The result is a wide-ranging display of more than 60 color and black-and-white prints by 27 local photographers on all manner of subjects\, from landscapes and portraits to abstracts. \nThis year’s show is dedicated to the memory of Lorraine Richey\, a long-time guild member who lost a long battle with cancer last fall. A graduate of Oregon State University and a resident of Portland\, Richey was an inspirational photographer who moved fluidly among genres during her 40-year photographic career. She is best known for her multi-layered abstractions created with her I-phone\, several examples of which are in this exhibit. \nThe PhotoArts Guild was formed 40 years ago to promote and support fine art photography in the mid-valley and has been an affiliated guild of the Corvallis Art Center since 1988. The group has evolved over the decades from one focused primarily on large-format film photography to one populated mostly by digital camera artists pursuing non-commercial forms of the medium–landscape\, wildlife\, portrait\, fine art\, nature and more.

SUMMARY:The Art of Long Exposure Photography with Thibault Roland
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Long Exposure Photography with Thibault Roland \nLecture at Pro Photo Supply: March 27\, 2025\nIn-person workshop in the Hood River area: March 30th\, 2025 \nPro Photo Supply\n1112 NW 19th Ave\nPortland\, OR 97209 \nhttps://prophotosupply.com/ \n$25 – $135 (Eventbrite) \n\nPhotography has the power to freeze time\, to capture the world and reality. In most people’s minds\, photography has to be truthful to reality. It has to depict a scene\, atmosphere\, or event accurately. But photography is so much more than a simple tool to document our lives… \nPhotography is also a way to express ourselves and our point of view\, to share our messages. Photography allows us to change what we see based on our emotions and intent. Photography can be abstract and minimalistic. Photography is art. \nLong exposure is a technique that embraces this mindset: it transforms reality into something else\, into a dialogue between the artist\, the subject\, and the viewer. By stretching the time used to capture a single image\, the photographer includes movement in their art: water becomes smooth\, clouds create long silky streaks\, trees blur out in the wind… the effects are endless. \nLed by Sony Artisan of Imagery\, Thibault Roland\, this event consists of two sessions. \nThe first session is a virtual lecture on long exposure\, during which you will learn the process and what equipment you need to create breathtaking images using this unique technique. If you are not able to join this virtual session\, it will be recorded and provided to all registered attendees. \nThe second part of this event consists of a half-day\, hands-on workshop in Hood River area\, where you will have the opportunity to capture beautiful long-exposure images and benefit from Thibault’s in-person advice to take your skills to the next level. During this workshop\, we will capture scenes located along the Columbia River utilizing the beautiful landscapes found along the gorge. \nNorthwest Sony rep Dan Hawk will be present to bring several of Sony’s most popular lenses and cameras for this style of photography for attendees to get hands-on with during this workshop! These cameras and lenses will be limited and loaned out on a first come first serve basis. \nWhat to Bring*:\n• Camera (with bulb mode capability necessary)\n• Lens (16-35mm and 24-70mm recommended)\n• Memory card (bring extra if you want to try a Sony camera!)\n• Extra Batteries\n• A shutter release (can be wired or remote)\n• ND Filter (13- to 16- stop recommended) – these can be screw-mount or square; more details during the lecture!\n• Step up ring to use the filter on multiple lenses\n• Sturdy Tripod \n*if you need any piece of equipment\, please check out Pro Photo Supply to purchase or rent what gear you may need. Your order confirmation email for this event will even include a code for 25% off any rentals placed for this workshop. \nDon’t miss this chance to refine your skills and explore new photographic perspectives! \n\n6:30 PM – 8:30 PM \nVirtual Lecture – March 27th \nPrice: $25 \n________________________________________ \nA lecture on long exposure\, during which you will learn the process\, skills\, and equipment you need to take your skills to the next level and create breathtaking images using this unique technique. Five years later\, in an era of renewed political upheaval\, we reexamine that time with Sai’s images. \n“Sai’s photography captures the raw intensity and significance of the 2020 police brutality protests\, amidst a backdrop of social unrest and a global pandemic. Through his lens\, he skillfully navigates the chaotic and emotionally charged scenes\, documenting the powerful moments that unfold on the streets of Portland Oregon. \nHis photographs convey a profound sense of urgency and activism\, reflecting the collective outcry for justice and equality. Each frame captures the human spirit\, as protesters bravely confront systemic issues and demand societal change. These photographs reveal the diverse faces and voices at the heart of these movements\, providing a platform for marginalized communities to be seen and heard.” \n-Sai Stone \nAn opening reception is scheduled for Saturday\, April 5\, from 5-8 p.m. \nSai’s work will be on display through the month of April. \nFranklin Foto is a community darkroom and gallery space located in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood. SUMMARY:Zemie Barr\, 2\,000 Miles and Back: Traversing Changing Landscapes at Portland Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Zemie Barr\, 2\,000 Miles and Back: Traversing Changing Landscapes at Portland Art Museum \nPortland Art Museum Photography Council’s Lunchtime Talk Series \nApril 16\, 2025\nWednesday\, Noon to 1pm\nPortland Art Museum\nTrustee Room\, 4th Floor in the Mark Building\n1219 SW Park Avenue\, Portland\, OR 97205\nwww.portlandartmuseum.org / 503 226 2811 \nCost: Free and open to the public \n\nIn her lunchtime talk\, Portland-based artist and curator Zemie Barr will share recent photographic work made from 2021 onward. That year\, she moved from Portland to Chicago\, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and during a particularly devastating fire season for the Pacific Northwest. These events led the artist to create multiple photo-based series to process the grief associated with witnessing the effects of climate change in real time. Using found imagery\, as well as analog and digital photographs taken while traveling across the country and beyond\, the artist balances these feelings of loss with an aesthetic focus on the sublime beauty and magical potential still present in the natural world. \nZemie Barr is an artist and curator based in Portland\, Oregon\, where she previously served as Exhibitions Director at Blue Sky Gallery and co-founded Wolff Gallery. Zemie uses digital and analog photography to explore themes of memory\, loss\, and our relationship to the natural world. Most recently\, her work has been exhibited at Perspective Gallery in Evanston\, IL; Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria\, OR; Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg\, OR; and in online exhibitions hosted by the Center for Fine Art Photography\, ArtDoc Magazine\, and F-Stop Magazine. In 2022 she was selected as one of Photolucida’s Top 200 Critical Mass Finalists. \nhttps://www.zemulabarr.com \n\nAbout the Photography Council \nThe Portland Art Museum Photography Council offers its members unique opportunities to learn more about the history of photography with Julia Dolan\, Ph.D.\, the Museum’s Minor White Curator of Photography. Council membership dues support the acquisition of photographs for the permanent collection. The members’ annual print share meeting\, private tours with Dr. Dolan\, and special invitations to lectures by renowned photographers are just some of the benefits of Council membership. \nThe Portland Art Museum Photography Council’s Lunchtime Talk series\, conceived in 2009 by Past Council President Jim Leisy as a means of introducing the Portland photography community to the wealth of talent and creative energy in our region\, has become one of the Council’s most popular public events. Since its inception\, the LTS has offered over one hundred and thirty monthly presentations by regional and visiting photographers/artists that are free and open to everyone interested in photographic arts and process.

SUMMARY:Rich Bergeman & Gary Tepfer: Desert Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman & Gary Tepfer: Desert Landscapes \nApril 25 – June 7\, 2025\nReception + Gallery Talk on Saturday April 26\, from 1-3pm \nWhite Lotus Gallery\n767 Willamette St\nEugene\, OR 97401\nwww.wlotus.com\nOpen Tuesday through Saturday 10am-4pm \nTwo veteran Oregon photographers–Gary Tepfer of Eugene and Rich Bergeman of Corvallis–are teaming up for an exhibit at White Lotus titled “From Steppe to Steppe\,” featuring color and black-and-white photographs of arid territories from Oregon’s High Desert to Asia’s Altai Mountains. \nBoth photographers\, working independently\, have been exploring desert environments for decades\, and while they share a love for the spare elegance of the land\, their interpretation of that land offers viewers some engaging contrasts. \nTepfer is known for his striking color images from the American Southwest\, Eastern Oregon and the steppes of Mongolia and Siberia\, regions he has visited many times over the past four decades. “I want to capture that aspect of the natural world that stands apart from human existence\,” Tepfer says. “But the locations to which I am drawn are often the same places that are the most rich in the ritual artifacts of ancient peoples.” \nBergeman\, on the other hand\, is a black-and-white photographer whose most recent work has focused on that portion of the Great Basin that lies within Oregon\, especially remnants of the paleolakes that dot the region. \n“I’ve always wondered about all those ‘lakes’ I’d see marked on maps that didn’t really exist as bodies of water\,” he says. “A little research taught me they were footprints of the great inland seas that once covered the area 10\,000 years ago. Intrigued\, I began to search for them and find ways to dramatize this curious evidence of the past.” \nBoth photographers have work in several private and public collections and over the years have been published in books and periodicals. \nTepfer’s photography can be seen at http://gtepfer.com/ and Bergeman’s at richbergeman.zenfolio.com and blurb.com.
