SUMMARY:Nykelle DeVivo\, A Flash of Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Nykelle DeVivo\, A Flash of Spirit \nPortland Art Museum Photography Council Lunchtime Talk Series \nWednesday\, April 22\, 2026\, 12:00pm to 1pm \nPortland Art Museum\n1119 SW Park Ave.\nPortland\, OR 97205\nTrustee Room\, 4th floor in the Mark building \nwww.portlandartmuseum.org / 503 226 2811 \nCost: Free to the public. (People are welcome to bring their lunch.) \nI use light as a ritual technology for spiritual intervention and ancestral protection. In this presentation\, I’ll trace the evolution of my artistic practice and pay homage to those who guided me forward. From the potentiality in Sun Ra’s astral travels to the void work of decolonial struggles\, I’ll discuss the power of light in all its forms. \nNykelle DeVivo (they/them) a Portland-based artist whose practice centers on light as a tool for ancestral connection and spiritual revelation. Through photography\, film\, and installation\, they engage in a meditative dialogue with the unseen\, drawing from diasporic traditions of divination\, Afrofuturist methodologies\, and Black Anarchist praxis. DeVivo holds an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego and is an inaugural Google Image Equity Fellow. Their work has been presented internationally and is included in numerous public and private collections. They are currently preparing their first monograph\, Tha Crossroads\, a culmination of over a decade of image-making\, slated for release in 2027. \nhttps://www.nykelledevivo.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Phil Harris\, Boundless/Duration
DESCRIPTION:Phil Harris\, Boundless/Duration \nMay 7-30 \nFirst Thursday Opening Reception\, May 7th 5-8 pm \nGallery 114\n1100 NW Glisan\nPortland\, OR 97209\n503-243-3356\nThursday-Sunday\, 12-5 pm\nwww.gallery114.com \nIn this exhibition\, I’m pairing two types of large-scale photographic work: Duration and Boundless. The Duration work started a decade ago\, and involves carefully documenting and reassembling processes of time and change. \nBoundless is a more recent\, more open body of work. Boundless is about questions of light\, form and color: an intuitive response to the complexity\, wonder and fluid nature of the world. \nBoth bodies of work are responses to the extraordinary qualities that nest inside the ordinary\, when we take the time and make the effort to look closely. \npharris.art

SUMMARY:What I Carry at Portland Arts Collective
DESCRIPTION:What I Carry: A collaborative photo+writing project with Portland’s Street Community & Photos of Things That Matter: A Collaborative Project with Street Roots Vendors \nMay 7 – 30\, 2026\nOpening Reception- First Thursday\, May 7\, 6 – 9pm \nPortland Arts Collective\n122 NW Couch Street\nPortland\, OR 97209\n(503) 853-0418\nHours: Wednesday thru Saturday 12-5 and by appointment\, anytime (email or call/text)\nhttps://www.portlandartscollective.org/ \nPoetry Readings: Saturday\, May 9\, 2pm-3:00pm \n“What I Carry: Voices from The Street” (video)\, Saturday\, May 23\, 2pm-3:00pm \n“Helpers” (video) by Kelly Clendenon\, Saturday\, May 30\, 2pm-3:00pm \n  \nWhat I Carry: A collaborative photo+writing project with Portland’s Street Community \n  \n“This innovative project explores the burdens\, hopes\, and dreams of Portland’s homeless population through cherished items they carry throughout their lives\, fostering compassion and understanding in a world often divided. Through compelling storytelling and creative expression\, award-winning photographer Jim Lommasson amplifies voices from Portland’s homeless community\, addressing themes of mental health\, addiction\, housing\, personal growth\, family dynamics and illuminates the resilience and humanity behind each object – and the person carrying it. This project resonates deeply for me\, spreading a message of shared humanity and the healing power of empathy.” \n– John Lewis \nPhotos of Things That MatterA Collaborative Project with Street Roots Vendors \nPhotos of Things that Matter trusts that those who live the stories are the ones meant to tell them. Through 35mm film images\, hand-made photobooks\, and zines\, Street Roots vendors trace the places that hold them; streets walked\, familiar places\, and a changing landscape.Their photographs hold a living archive\, and each frame is an act of claiming space. Together\, these stories speak on resilience and imagination\, inviting us to slow down\, look closely\, and truly listen. \nThe photographs presented were created through weekly photography and visual storytelling workshops at Street Roots’ School in the Sky. More than skill-building sessions\, the workshops intend for conversation\, relationship\, and trust. The work does not rely on participants having prior experience in photography; instead\, it builds from their own knowledge and skills\, using image-making and bookmaking as ways to express and tell their stories. With support from peers\, project leaders\, and visiting guests\, each session is shaped by those in the room\, allowing the process itself to guide what is made and how it is shared. \nJim Lommasson is a freelance photographer and storyteller based in Portland. Lommasson is a recipient of the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize from The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Lommasson’s ongoing collaborative storytelling projects: What We Carried: Fragments and Memories from the Cradle of Civilization with Iraqi and Syrian refugees was exhibited at the Ellis Island Museum of Immigration in 2018. Stories of Survival and Remembrance: A Call to Action for Genocide Prevention was exhibited at the United Nations Headquarters in 2023. \n

SUMMARY:Julie Moore at LightBox Photographic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Julie Moore at LightBox Photographic Gallery \nJune 13\, 2026 through July 08\, 2026\nOpening Reception from 4 – 7pm on Saturday\, June 13 \nLightBox Photographic Gallery & Fine Printing\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, Oregon 97103\n(503) 468-0238\nHours: Wednesday – Saturday 12 pm to 5 pm \nOur June exhibits mark a milestone: LightBox Photographic Gallery’s 18th anniversary. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us across nearly two decades of celebrating the photographic arts. Join us for our Opening Reception on Saturday\, June 13 from 4–7pm at our gallery in Astoria\, Oregon. \nJulie Moore presents how a dream unfolds\, an exhibit of enhanced lumen prints. This exhibit offers a visual & immersive representation of the complex subject of dreaming. Long believed to be messages …whether from our unconscious or a source beyond our understanding …dreams have been studied and revered across all cultures. \nDreaming merges what our eyes see and what our hearts feel within our unconscious mind. They are a type of visual poetry that only hints at their deeper meanings & symbolisms. In this exhibit Julie focuses on the visual splendor and sometimes despair of our ‘dreaming world’. Whether dreams bring the softness of our loves & lives to better help us or the darkness to warn us\, they often provide a clearer picture of our angels and our demons. \nStep into a world where dreams transcend the boundaries of reality. how a dream unfolds invites you to explore the intricate layers of dreams through the enhanced lumen process. Images co-created with sun\, silver halide paper\, herbs\, spices and desire. The results are often un-expected and the dream-like qualities of light and form fill the room. \nComplete show info is on the LightBox website\, http://lightbox-photographic.com/shows/.
