SUMMARY:Deb Stoner at Imogen Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Deb Stoner\, Garden Studies \nApril 13 – June 4\, 2019Artist reception Saturday April 13\, 2019\, 5-8pm \nImogen Gallery240 11th StAstoria\, OR 97103503-468-0620info@imogengallery.comDaily (Wed by appointments): 11AM to 5PMSundays 11AM to 4PMhttp://imogengallery.com/painters-print-makers/deb-stonerwww.debstoner.com \n  \nGarden StudiesThe past few years have been tumultuous by anyone’s accounting. Fires and tsunamis and insane leaders of the world give me a distinct feeling of the world being out of control. Perhaps it is my art work that grounds me\, that gives me at least an illusion of being in control\, if only on the 8.5”x11.7” scanner glass on which I compose my still life photographs. \nI make high resolution images of things I gather in nature\, from intensely dense urban floral gardens to experimental vegetable breeding gardens. This year was the first where I made photographs from the mobile studio that my partner made from a 1952 vintage trailer\, marking freedom from the tether of my usual home studio. Some of these photographs have come from that experience. All are a continuation of a large ongoing body of work called “A Year in the Willamette Valley”\, a reference to place and time. Obviously inspired by 16th and 17th century European floral painters\, as well as the natural/fake large scale dioramas in natural history museums\, I’m mostly interested in making beautiful compositions. The scanner\, as my photographic tool of choice\, reveals extraordinary details far beyond the ability of my unaided eyes. My obsession is paying attention to phenomenal and ephemeral events in gardens throughout the year and making images with them in real time. This opportunity to show at Imogen Gallery coincided with my having access to a large printer. I’ve always made my work to a very high resolution with large scale in mind\, and I sit for hours in front of my computer prepping the images so that they can be printed this large. But only rarely have I seen my work in its physical self this big\, and it’s exciting for me to see these massive unwieldy paper objects crowded into this tiny space. This fall I’ll get to see the work even larger…I won a juried competition to have my images printed on vinyl to wrap the Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes\, California. Yep\, the whole building exterior. Watch this space for details! \nDeb Stoner holds an MFA in Applied Design from SDSU\, a BS in Geology from UC Davis\, and a decades long teaching career at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Recently she presented lectures on photography to the Yuma Symposium\, the Portland Art Museum\, the SPE NW Regional Conference; had solo shows in 2017\, 2016 and 2015\, with two scheduled for 2019; numerous group shows; juried purchases in the permanent public art collections at University of Oregon\, OHSU\, PCC\, and the Portland International Airport; is the recipient of grants and a recent residency; and sells work to enthusiastic collectors.

SUMMARY:Pamela Chipman at UnionKnott
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Chipman\, “Hireath” – the longing for a romanticized past. \nApril 5 – April 29Opening Reception:  Friday April 5th 6-9pm \nUnionKnott2726 NE MLK Blvd.Portland\, OR(next to Bridges Cafe (Parking in back)971-207-1232 \nOPEN Hours: Mondays: April 8\,15\,22 9am-noon\, Wednesdays: April 3\,10\, &17\, 4-7pmFilm Screening April 13th\, 7pm – rare films by Pamela ChipmanClosing night: April 29 6-8pmPortrait sittings: Show up during the open hours schedule.  darmacrash@yahoo.com \nIn this exhibit Chipman employs gold leaf in her photography to explore the concepts of longing for something that is gone. The Welsh have a word for it\, “Hireath”. It is about the yearning and longing for someone or someplace that you can never experience again. \nChipman visited Santa Rosa California 6 months after the Tubbs fire and Paradise California 4 months after the Camp fire\, both fires decimated whole neighborhoods\, she photographed was was left. Juxtaposing that with gilded images of childhood and childhood artifacts she builds upon this theme of grief or sadness for who or what you have lost\, losses which make your “home” someplace you can never return to. \nwww.pamelachipman.com \nAs an artist\, Pamela Chipman produces work that explores personal identity through a variety of portals. She studied video and photography at UCLA. In the late 1980’s she moved to Portland and co-created the Blue Gallery\, an innovative gallery and performance space designed as a place to present challenging art. Chipman’s work has screened across the country in galleries and on community television channels\, and is held in private collections. \nHer current work in photography and video explores personal identity through the dialogue of artifacts and language. Chipman’s work revolves around ordinary people performing ordinary tasks\, emphasizing their movements\, their space\, their quiet\, their noise\, their relationship to the air around them\, and the influences on their lives. Working in a non-liner fashion\, she explores her subjects’ relationships to the past\, and creates a visual space for her subjects and their reflections to inhabit. Starting with simple memories and stories she reveals their power as tributes to the personal courage and introspective depth of her subjects. \nThroughout Chipman’s career she has explored the potentials of the video medium through a wide variety of project\, ranging from video-poetry\, live television\, game- shows\, installations\, and documentary projects. Through all of this work she has focused on video and photography as tools for reaching a broad artistic audience\, and for building community. She continues to explore new methods of integrating media into our visual world through installations and video books\, and public art. \n

SUMMARY:Rich Bergeman at Columbia Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman\, The Vanishing West \nApril 5-27\, 2019Opening reception Friday\, April 5\, from 6-8pm \nThe Lobby GalleryColumbia Center for the Arts215 Cascade Ave.Hood River\, OR 97031541-387-8877www.columbiaarts.orgOpen Tues-Sat 11-5pm \nCorvallis photographer Rich Bergeman’s black-and-white photographs chronicle the disappearing traces of frontier days on Columbia Plateau and Northern Great Basin–deserted homesteads\, abandoned schoolhouses\, ghost town and other remnants of early attempts by Euro-Americans to settle the Northwest. \nThe photographer has spent much of the past two decades creating art out of forgotten histories in Oregon and Washington\, focusing particularly on the far-flung eastern parts of both states. The CCA exhibit includes images of old towns\, historic ranches and deserted homesteads from the High Desert and mountain mining areas of eastern Oregon\, as well as the Okanogan and Palouse regions of Washington. Such formerly prosperous turn-of-the-century Oregon towns as Flora\, Antelope and Granite are represented\, as well as Goodnoe Hills and Molson in Washington\, among others. \nAn exhibiting fine-art photographer for nearly 30 years\, Bergeman retired from teaching photography and journalism at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany in 2007\, and since then has been working full-time on his photography projects. In recent years he has created books and exhibits on the homestead land rush in Central Oregon\, the life of Washington pioneer James Swan on Willapa Bay\, the human history of Oregon’s Coast Range rivers\, and the landscapes of the Rogue River Wars in Southern Oregon. Examples of his photographs can be seen at richbergeman.zenfolio.com\, and at blurb.com.

Addis’ goal is to challenge the ingrained perception of “chaos and disorder” that many people have when thinking of informal housing settlements. \nHe writes\, “I have focused on the landscape and architecture of these homes and communities in order to show the creativity and resilience of the people who created them. The efficiency and the adaptive nature of these self-built communities makes them worthy of attention in order to see what can be learned from them about urban planning and sustainable development.” \nFuture Cities is the recipient of the 2018 Critical Mass Solo Show Award presented in collaboration with Photolucida. \nNoah Addis is a photographer currently based in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Addis graduated from Drexel University with a degree in Photography. He has worked on documentary projects across the globe\, including locations in Africa\, Iraq\, and the United States. B.Eugene\, OR. 97405541 729 3572Open weekdays\, call be be sure we’re open.email: waltobrien1945@gmail.comwebsite:  http://obrienimaging.com \n“My photographs are typically the result of an enthusiastic hike in search of unique glimpses of nature. I enjoy the entire process of planning an outing\, observing the weather\, light\, and composition of the subject. The actual “taking” of a photograph affects me. Often my heart will race\, giving me immediate feedback that the image is original and worthwhile. The photographic process is a journey of the translation of light on the camera sensor to a print that sparks in me the original aesthetic and emotional response. Whether the result is an image of a landscape\, water in all its forms\, or rock strata\, I seek meaning in a beautiful “snapshot” of color\, time and space. \nAs noted by Emerson\, ‘meaning in life may be better grounded in nature than American politics\, religion\, or literature.’ I am amazed at the complexities of natural cycles such as the erosion of rock and the formation of new sandstone\, or the emergence and inevitable disintegration of all life. My photographs open a small window into a feeling of wonder\, and of mysterious permanence\, overlying the cycles of nature.” \n

We impersonate each other and ourselves\, emulating imagery that taught us to be beautiful.” \nNatalie Krick’s series Natural Deceptions is a playful\, performative exploration of identity in relation to cultural expectations of feminine beauty and sexuality. Made in collaboration with her mother and sister\, Krick employs the visual languages of fashion photography and celebrity portraiture. However\, the visual complexity of her multilayered\, vibrant portraits reveals a decidedly female gaze behind the camera\, one that eschews hypersexualization or idealization of the female body. Instead\, Krick reveals photography’s role in the creation of these optical illusions within popular culture. \nNatalie Krick (b. 1986 in Portland\, Oregon) currently lives in Seattle\, Washington. She received her BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2008 and her MFA in photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2012. She has recently exhibited at SOIL Gallery in Seattle; Webber Represents in London; Aperture Gallery in New York; and Weinberg/Newton Gallery in Chicago. In 2015 she received an Individual Photographer’s Fellowship from the Aaron Siskind Foundation and in 2017 she received the Aperture Portfolio Prize for Natural Deceptions.

They have been taking photos since they were 17\, but it wasn’t until purchasing a Yashicamat 124g five years ago that their approach to photography changed. \nMost of the presented works have been captured using an Olympus XA and a Hasselblad 500c. Their work is a mixture of landscapes and portraiture from their portfolio; the collection on display has been taken over the course of the last 3 years varying from travels through abandoned factories in Leipzig to intentional styling of a set. Most of their work revolves around explorations of queerness and identity. Spencer’s portraits originally started during a darkroom class at PSU in fall 2014\, interpreting themes of existence and isolation as a queer and trans person in a society that – at a federal level – is working to erase trans identities. \nThese works are but the start of something bigger.

SUMMARY:Bernard C. Meyers at Camerawork Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Bernard C. Meyers\, Urban Abstracts     \nMarch 2 – March 29\, 2019 Artist Talk\, Saturday\, March 2\, 3:30pm-4:30pm Reception following 4:30pm-5:30pm Camerawork Gallery 301 N. Open to the public. http://www.TheCameraworkGallery.org http://www.Facebook.com/cameraworkgallery 503-701-5347 \nBernard C. Meyers notes\, “I want to rattle the bones of a building\, shake common perceptions of concrete reality. I want the temporal elements shifting between both the original architecture and my imagination. For me the higher ground of art has always been occupied by the unexplainable\, the abstract. “I see architecture as possibilities\, as material to mold and shape. My intent is to uncover uncommon collisions of color and form\, to exemplify texture and the rearrangement of line. I am building and deconstructing simultaneously. I want the original geometric intentions of the structure to find new life. I want these elements to discover a new context\, a world off kilter\, where conventional space is fraught; as if caught between like ends of magnets. “Committed to lens-based capture I ask myself this question\, “What is visually possible with new cutting-edge technologies\, software and how can I apply it to my work?” Within that question this project was born. From a background as an architectural view camera photographer I have found a visual language between the structural impossibilities of M.C. Escher and the complex color spaces of Richard Diebencorn. The world of abstract expressionism has new chapter being written with the tools and techniques of the twenty-first century. “I am celebrating the latent beauty possible with the building blocks of 2D design\, color and the technology available in 2019. The distinctions between painting\, printmaking and photography for me have become irrelevant as all disciplines merge in these images. I love the work\, it both intrigues and surprises me. The reward lies in creating what I have never seen before. Throughout my career as an artist my guiding premise\, from Minor White\, has always been\, photograph something not for what it is but for what it can become.” To preview examples of Meyer’s Urban Abstracts exhibit\, Click here. \nBernard C. Meyers is recognized internationally as an artist and master printer. His work is held in public\, private\, and corporate collections nationwide. He is represented by the Klotz Gallery in New York. Portfolios can be seen at www.klotzgallery.com/bernardmeyers. His pursuit of beauty and the abstract has been an unwavering life-long passion. \nBernard earned an MFA in traditional printmaking\, etching and lithography and a BFA in photography as a fine art from the Rochester Institute of Technology. In the eighties he founded and managed a fine art printing business\, Portland Photographics specializing in portfolio and an exhibition photographic printing. This rapidly became one of the finest photographic printing facilities drawing clients from Magnum\, National Geographic\, ICP and photographers from around the world. From 1990 through 2010 his photographic studio specialized in architectural photography and art reproduction. \nBernard has taught photography at the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine\, Rochester Institute of Technology and the Maine Workshops and currently at the Waterford School in Sandy. Throughout all of this time he has continued to exhibit work. Klotz gallery has featured his work at the last three AIPAD shows. His exhibition history includes numerous group and solo shows. In 2017 early Urban Abstracts work was a solo show of large prints exhibited at the Rochester Institute of Technology University Gallery. \nwww.BernardCMeyers.comhttp://www.instagram.com/Meyers_bernard/

DESCRIPTION:Small Talk Collective\, Rumors Audra Osborne\, Briana Cerezo\, Jennifer Timmer Trail\, Kelli Pennington\, Kristina Hruska\, Leslie Hickey\, and Marico Fayre \nFebruary 27–April 28\, 2019First Friday opening reception: March 1\, 6:00-8:00 PM \nWolff Gallery2804 SE Ankeny St.Portland\, OR 97214 Open Wed-Sun 11am-6pm // Open until 8pm every First Friday of the month \nWolff Gallery is pleased to present a group show featuring new work by the members of Small Talk\, a collective of seven women photographers based in Portland\, Oregon. \n“As a collective\, we have the honor of witnessing and discussing the progression of our individual works. We find ourselves traveling along parallel paths\, drawn to new directions and processes. We discover common ground in similar themes\, investigating dark corners and intimate places. Here\, our realities\, our unverified stories\, come together for a time before continuing onward. We present selections of new work from each member curated to tell a temporary fiction of rumor and truth.” \nSmall Talk is a photography collective comprised of seven women: Audra Osborne\, Briana Cerezo\, Jennifer Timmer Trail\, Kelli Pennington\, Kristina Hruska\, Leslie Hickey\, and Marico Fayre. The collective formed in Portland\, Oregon in 2015. \nAs a group\, we explore the nature of what it means to be a visual storyteller\, pool resources\, provide support and critique\, and facilitate community events and discussions. We engage in the best kind of “small talk\,” that which binds us together both as a collective and within a larger community of women and minority artists\, fostering stronger work and collaboration. Our first book\, We’re Always Touching by Underground Wires\, was published in April 2018. \n  \nSmall Talk Collective
