SUMMARY:Melanie Flood\, Paraphernalia: Femininity\, Objects\, and the Archive
DESCRIPTION:Melanie Flood\, Paraphernalia: Femininity\, Objects\, and the Archive \nPortland Art Museum Photography Council Lunchtime Talk Series \nWednesday\, October 28\, 2026\, 12 noon to 1pm \nPortland Art Museum\n1119 SW Park Ave.\nPortland\, OR 97205\nwww.portlandartmuseum.org / 503 226 2811\nCost: Free to the public. \n  \nArtist Melanie Flood discusses her thirty-eight-year photographic archive and the “paraphernalia” that runs through it. The word began as a legal term for the property a married woman kept as her own—such as her clothing\, jewelry\, toiletries\, and personal effects—yet these objects are routinely dismissed as superficial because they are coded female. She considers the forces that shaped her practice\, from the formation of gender ideals to the professionalization of the arts\, and the space midlife creates to strip constraints away. \nMelanie Flood (b. NY; lives and works in Portland\, OR) employs photography as a tool for examining how femininity is constructed\, commodified\, and performed. Working across self-portraiture\, studio still lifes\, and vernacular image-making\, her work draws on the archive\, beauty culture\, and the aesthetics of everyday feminine life. \nRecent exhibitions include the Schneider Museum of Art\, Ashland\, OR; ILY2\, Portland\, OR; Ruschwoman\, Chicago\, IL; Fourteen30 Contemporary\, Portland\, OR; and Ditch Projects\, Springfield\, OR. She has received support from the Oregon Arts Commission\, the Ford Family Foundation\, and the Regional Arts and Cultural Council. From 2008 to 2022 she founded and directed Melanie Flood Projects\, an artist-run exhibition space established in Brooklyn\, NY. She holds a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice from Portland State University\, where she teaches in the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. \nhttps://www.melanieflood.com/

SUMMARY:Bryan Andresen\, Photographs of People Simply Being Human
DESCRIPTION:Bryan Andresen\, Photographs of People Simply Being Human \nOctober 31 through January 6\, 2027\nReception with refreshments on October 31 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. \nThe O’Brien Photo Gallery\n2833 Willamette\, Ste B.\nEugene\, OR 97405\n(541) 729-3572\nCall ahead to be sure we are open or to set special viewing times. \n  \nEvery Picture Tells a Story: Photographs of People Simply Being Human \nI am drawn to the magic of a photograph capturing a moment in a person’s life that evokes individuality\, personality\, and emotion. I strive to photograph a connection that person shares with me\, a loved animal\, or their surroundings. Is it their expression\, body position\, or hand gesture that captivates me? Does the photograph capture a moment in time that is\, or will be\, important to that person? I may photograph a person I’ve known for decades\, or perhaps known only in a brief encounter. As Kermit the Frog wisely tells us: “Life is made up meetings and partings. That is the way of it”. I value and feel honored to briefly be a part of that person’s tapestry of life. \nIn addition to close-up portraits\, I have included several “Where’s Waldo?” photos in this exhibit. The inclusion of a very small human figure is intentional. These images evoke not just the smallness of humans within a vast physical environment\, but a connection to a larger world. \nWith my camera\, I seek to capture not just an interesting image of people\, but an element of the mystery of what it means to be human. \nAdditional images of Bryan’s work may be viewed at: www.andresenphoto.com \nBorn in Portland\, raised in Junction City\, and currently living outside Eugene\, Bryan has relatively deep roots as a fifth-generation Oregonian. \nHis photographs typically are the result of an enthusiastic journey in search of unique glimpses of our world and its inhabitants. Bryan has had a life-long interest in photography; from his earliest years\, a camera has typically accompanied him on outings. \nTwo experiences in his youth had a lasting effect on him. When he was 18\, he survived a near-fatal mountaineering accident in which he fell 600 feet down rock\, snow\, and ice. Then\, while studying hummingbirds in Costa Rica during college\, he revived an unconscious\, non-breathing man who had been pulled from the ocean. These experiences had a lasting effect on him and helped form his appreciation of and veneration for human life. \nStarting in 2016\, he has described himself as a “serious amateur” photographer. He conjectures that the toxic and ugly political climate of that year stimulated in him a deep desire to bring something of worth\, meaning\, and beauty into the world. \nRetiring from medical practice in 2019\, he joined Eugene’s Photo Zone the same year. He now devotes considerable time\, passion and enthusiasm to the study and practice of photography. \n

SUMMARY:Doremus Scudder\, New Work
DESCRIPTION:Doremus Scudder\, New Work \nNovember 6th – 28th\nOpening Reception on Friday\, November 6th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm during the Lane County First Friday Artwalk. \nNew Zone Gallery\n110 E 11th Ave.\nEugene\, OR 97401\nTuesday – Sunday 12 – 6 pm\nnewzonegallery.org \nFree and open to the public \n  \nPhotographs from my recent travels in the American West \nThis exhibit showcases monochrome images from my “photo safaris” with my large-format film camera during the last few years. None of these works has been exhibited before. They include photographs from the Pacific Coast\, the Oregon Outback and more. As is usual for me\, nothing at all is digital. All the images were made with black-and-white film and enlarged in the darkroom onto silver-gelatin fiber-base photographic paper. \nDoremus Scudder spent his early years in Southern Oregon He grew up with a deep appreciation of nature and became an avid outdoorsman. He learned the basics of photography when still a child\, as well as developing an early love of classical music. He has pursued dual careers of photography and music since his university days. \nDoremus’ work springs from the American West-Coast tradition of Straight Photography. He works exclusively in black-and-white\, using large-format cameras and film\, and hand-crafts prints in the darkroom using traditional photographic techniques. Nothing is done using digital technology. \nWithin this medium\, he uses varied subject matter\, careful organization of the subject\, and a broad and expressive palette of tonalities to create compelling images of strong form\, character and content. The photographs themselves are their own best description\, expressing their wordless world powerfully and eloquently. They are able to be appreciated on many levels\, being rich in immediate impact as well as yielding ever more profundity and detail over time. \nDoremus Scudder’s work is exhibited widely and represented in numerous galleries and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. \nMore of his work can be seen at his website: www.DoremusScudder.com. \n

SUMMARY:Melanie & Todd Walker\, Good Grief\, The Photograph Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:Melanie & Todd Walker\, Good Grief\, The Photograph Reimagined \nNov. 3rd – 25th\, 2026\nOpening Reception: Second Friday\, November 13th\, 5 – 7:30 pm during the Springfield Art Walk\nArtist Talk: November 15th at 2:30 pm at the Emerald Art Center (use side entrance on 5th St.) \nEmerald Art Center\n500 Main St.\nSpringfield\, OR 97477\n11 am – 4 pm Tues. – Sat.\nFree and open to the public \nGood Grief brings together the innovative work of my father\, photographic artist\, Todd Walker\, and my posthumous collaboration shaped by the imperfect negatives he left behind. \nThe work presented in this exhibition is a sampling of some of his vast body of experimental digital work which he started in 1981\, teaching himself machine language\, way before Photoshop. Drawing on his painterly background where he taught himself color theory cleaning paint buckets at RKO Studios during his teens\, he worked with his black and while negatives to create his own unique approach to color. \nThe works on silk are a part of a posthumous collaboration after finding damaged negatives from his early commercial work. Made around the time I was born\, these compromised negatives carry traces of both photographic experimentation and personal history. Working with them now\, I treat their damage and irregularities not as flaws to correct\, but as openings—places where my father’s images meet my own hand and perspective. The resulting work holds two moments in relation: his act of making the photographs and my return to them decades later. I am interested in the physicality and material qualities of the disrupted surfaces and how they interact with the images recorded so long ago. \n“The title Good Grief speaks to the tenderness and complexity of that return: the joy of discovering new possibilities in his work\, alongside the ache of making something together after his death. The exhibition is a celebration of his inventive spirit and of the unexpected forms collaboration can take across time.” \nMelanie Walker is a third-generation photographic artist whose expertise is in the area of alternative photographic processes\, immersive photographic installations and public art. She has received a number of awards including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship\, Polaroid Materials Grants and the Aaron Siskind Award and is a third time PhotoLucida Critical Mass top 50 finalist. Her work is housed in numerous collections including the CCP Tucson\, LACMA\, and the Musee National d’art in Luxembourg. She recently stepped away from teaching at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she taught historic photographic process and alternative ideas for presenting photographs throughout her teaching career of 48 years. She uses her work as a vehicle to understand the world. \nTodd Walker (1917–1998) was a self-taught pioneer in photography. Born in Salt Lake City and raised in Los Angeles\, he built a successful career as a commercial photographer in the 1940s before leaving it to pursue his artistic interests. Beginning in the 1960s\, Walker explored alternative photographic processes—techniques that do not rely on silver gelatin—to develop a distinctive visual language. Dissatisfied with the formal possibilities of conventional photography\, he gravitated toward processes such as the Sabatier effect\, sometimes called solarization\, which emphasizes the edges and lines of forms. He described this quality as “the line drawn by light.” Color also became a defining element of his work. In 1981\, Walker began using digital processing to extend his photographic practice. He taught himself computer programming to create the tools he needed\, carrying his experimentation into the final decades of his career. \n  \nmelaniewalkerartist.com
