SUMMARY:Empowering Women\, Empowering Humanity at Aurora Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Johanna King\, Kathy Radie\, Pat Rose\, Empowering Women\, Empowering Humanity \nFebruary 2\, 2024 – February 29\, 2024\nFirst Friday Art Walk Opening Reception: February 2\, 2024\, 5-8pm \nAurora Gallery\n1004 Main Street\nVancouver\, WA 98660\n360-696-0449\nwww.auroragalleryonline.com\nGallery Hours: Mon-Fri 10am-5:30pm; Sat 10am-4pm \nThe phrase “women’s rights are human rights” has been used by champions of women’s causes for over a century. When Hillary Clinton used the phrase in her 1995 speech at the United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing\, it quickly became the rallying cry for the international women’s movement. The message that empowering women ultimately empowers all of humanity resonated with particular fervor on January 21\, 2017\, when women’s rights advocates organized the first Women’s March on Washington\, giving rise to concurrent “sister” marches in major cities in the US and throughout the world. The event supported gender equality and many other important social issues that were expected to suffer under the newly inaugurated US President. The 2017 Women’s March was the largest single-day demonstration in US history\, and it has now become an important annual event. The photos in this exhibit were made by three women who participated in the Women’s March in three cities in the Pacific Northwest: Kathy Radie in Seattle\, WA\, and Pat Rose in Portland\, OR\, during the inaugural march on January 21\, 2017\, and Johanna King in Port Townsend\, WA\, during the first anniversary march on January 20\, 2018. \nJohanna King is a Portland-based photographer who likes to do contextual portraits of both people and animals. She is a veteran traveler\, a serious birder and a natural history buff\, pastimes that have provided excellent opportunities for her photography. She spent her working career as a clinical psychologist\, and perhaps because of that\, she loves to make photographs that have a narrative thread. She wants each of her images to tell a story and to engage the viewer in speculation about why the photographs were made\, what is happening and what will happen next. Her work has been shown in a number of galleries in the Pacific Northwest. \nKathy Radie currently splits her time between Oregon and Alaska\, two of the many places that have shaped her life view and photographic eye. Her images have found a home in juried art shows\, commissions for one percent for the arts\, and the permanent collection at the University of Alaska Museum. She studied Fine Art Photography and History of Photography at the University of Iowa. Her work includes landscape\, portrait\, abstract and street photography. Landscape photography appeals to her introspective self\, portrait photography expresses her love of human diversity\, her street photography reflects her passion for travel\, and her abstract work says “let’s give this a second look.” You may view more of her work on Instagram at www.instagram.com/kathyradie1/. \nPat Rose is a Portland-based photographer whose work includes landscape\, street\, portrait and botanical photography. She is a retired English as a Second Language teacher who has taught in Saudi Arabia and Turkey\, in Austin\, Texas\, and most recently at Portland State University. Her photographs have been accepted into various juried group exhibitions in several galleries around the country\, and she has won many awards for her work. Her landscape photos have been published in two outdoor guidebooks. Pat also writes about photography for Oregon ArtsWatch\, the online journal for culture and the arts in the Pacific Northwest. Much of her work can be found on her website at www.patrosephotography.com. \n

SUMMARY:Per Bjesse at Blue Moon Camera
DESCRIPTION:Per Bjesse\, The Swim Cure \nOpening reception January 13th 6-8pm (calendar)\nJanuary 13th-March 13th \nBlue Moon Camera\n8417 N Lombard\nPortland\, OR 97203 \nClinical depression is a condition that is on a sharp rise with devastating societal and personal costs. The disease is associated with shame\, which often becomes a hurdle for those seeking help. The cyclical nature of gradual improvements and backslides can also make depression an exhausting ordeal that can wear out the limited support systems around the afflicted\, leaving them isolated. The photographs in this exhibition were taken over one year as I was trying to deal with my depression and propensity to stay house bound by regularly meeting up with friends and family for swimming. My experience is projected onto the people in my community that I leaned on as a support system\, and through the lens of the edges of rivers\, lakes\, and seas we visited together while I was trying to feel better. For me\, the water is a place where I have to muster up the courage to step in\, submerge myself\, and return to shore. It is the place all life on earth came from\, but also a place where you can drown. \n

SUMMARY:Sarah Abbott and Rachel Wolf - Photography Happens
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Abbott and Rachel Wolf\, Photography Happens \nJanuary 20\, 2024 – February 7\, 2024\nJanuary 2oth\, Artists’ Reception from 2-6pm \nLightBox Photographic Gallery\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, OR 97103\n503.468.0238\ninfo@lightbox-photographic.com \n  \nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens “Photography Happens”\, an exhibit by Sarah Abbott and Rachel Wolf\, on Saturday\, January 2oth. Please join us for the opening Artists’ Reception from 2-6pm. This opening was rescheduled after being cancelled last Saturday because of the weather. We hope everyone is ready to leave the storm behind and spend the afternoon in Astoria at the rescheduled opening Party! \nPhotography Happens is a collaborative exhibition by Sarah Abbott and Rachel Wolf that explores the ways in which photography has profoundly inspired two individual practices. This exhibition showcases two artists’ very different approaches to their making of photographs\, but punctuates their interests in parallel themes of fragmentation\, tension between subject and object\, disruption on the photographic plane\, and concepts of the everyday and perception. Together\, Abbott and Wolf engage in a dialogue that transcends the ordinary and challenges the conventional. \n  \nSarah Abbott (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Portland Oregon. She earned her BA in Studio Arts with a minor in Psychology from San Francisco State University\, and her MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art. Together with three MFA colleagues\, she co-founded FO(u)RT Collective\, an interdisciplinary art collective dedicated to collaboration\, critical discourse\, and collective exhibitions.\nAbbott’s art practice is emphatically centered around photography and the medium’s ability to promote pleasure in seeing everyday surroundings in new ways. Domestic subjects\, scenes and situations are captured with an eager and exploratory lens\, printed\, and oftentimes manipulated. Using photography in tandem with mediums such as collage\, sculpture\, bookbinding\, sewing and embroidery\, she experiments with the surface of the printed image to explore what happens when subject and content differ and inject complexity in seemingly simple images of everyday subjects. Abbott currently exhibits locally\, nationally\, and internationally.\n—\nRachel Wolf (she/her) is a professional photographer specializing in camera-less photography\, alternative/antique processes\, and the creation of immersive environments through light-based installations. Born and raised in Alaska\, Wolf’s work is profoundly shaped by the interplay of light and its absence in her surroundings. Her direct encounters with the aurora borealis fueled a deep appreciation for the transcendent qualities of light\, serving as both muse and focal point in her artistic practice.\nAs an educator and speaker\, Wolf delights in inspiring others by sharing her passion for light and photography. She champions the collaborative nature of art and its potential for community-building. Wolf is a co-founder of FO(u)RT Collective\, a collaborative multi-disciplinary arts group dedicated to critical discourse and creating\, curating\, and organizing exhibitions and events. Additionally\, as an engaged member of The Guild at LightBox Photographic Gallery\, Wolf actively contributes to the group’s mission of cultivating an appreciation for diverse photography processes through exhibitions\, workshops\, and collaborative endeavors.\nWolf’s work has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally\, with exhibitions spanning Germany\, Hungary\, Canada\, New York\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Cincinnati\, Seattle\, and Portland. Her photographs are featured in public and private collections. A graduate of Hampshire College (BA) and Pacific Northwest College of Art (MFA)\, Wolf currently enjoys her creative pursuits in her Portland\, OR darkroom. \nThe Guild at LightBox is a group of photographers that exhibit work regularly at the gallery as well as support the mission of the gallery. The Guild at LightBox consist of Jim Fitzgerald\, Jody Miller\, Julie Moore\, Marc McVey\, Rachel Wolf\, Sam Blair\, Michael Puff and Loren Nelson. The Guild’s work is always seen on the walls of LightBox\, please visit and learn more of these members work and vision. \nThe Photography Happens exhibit runs from January 13\, 2024 through February 7\, 2024. SUMMARY:Sam Blair at LightBox Photographic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Sam Blair\, Zenscapes \nDecember 9\, 2023 – January 10\, 2024\nArtist Reception: December 9th\, 4-7pm \nLightBox Photographic Gallery\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, OR 97103\n503.468.0238\ninfo@lightbox-photographic.com \nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens “Zenscapes” a solo exhibit by Sam Blair\, on Saturday\, December 9th. Please join us for the opening Artist Reception from 4-7pm. \n“The goal of Zen Buddhism\, simply stated\, is achieving and maintaining the highest mental state in life – equanimity. The road to that lofty ambition is living with simplicity\, minimalism\, and non-attachment to ego and materialism. It also means living with the awareness that all we really have in our lives is the present moment\, referred to as “tada ima”\, only now. When that mental state is achieved\, it creates a feeling of oneness and connection with the universe\, and is the well spring to the inherent joy\, happiness\, and inner peace within each and every one of us. I have attempted to reveal that mental state visually with this series called “Zenscapes”. My hope is that from your looking at the images I am able to share with you a bit of the peace and joy I felt while making them.” Sam Blair \nSam has a B.A. degree in English from the University of Denver\, and a J.D. degree from Lewis and Clark College of Law. He was a civil litigator for 35 years\, with offices in Oregon and Hawaii. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Willamette University College of Law in Salem\, Or. He is afflicted with wanderlust\, and retired from practicing Law to pursue his passion of travel and fine art photography. As a self taught photographer\, he has explored over 90 countries. His mission is to capture “the essence of things” in other cultures\, beaches\, and the fascinating homo sapien. He is a haiku poet. His poems have been published in multiple literary anthologies and journals. Sam is a longtime student of Zen Buddhism\, and trained in the Japanese martial art of Aikido\, where he earned a Black Belt. He lives in a Pine forest fronting Kyle Lake in Warrenton Or. \nThe Guild at LightBox is a group of photographers that exhibit work regularly at the gallery as well as support the mission of the gallery. SUMMARY:Guy Weese - Gold de Light Years - A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Guy Weese\, Gold de Light Years – A Retrospective \nDec. 5\, 2023 through Jan. 5\, 2024\nDuring Second Friday Artwalk\, Dec. 8\, 5-7:30 pm\nArtist’s talk starts at 7pm on Dec. 6. \nEmerald Art Center\n500 Main St. Springfield\, OR 97477\n(541) 726-8595\nTuesday through Saturday –  11 am – 4 pm\nemeraldartcenter.org\nFree and open to the public \nGuy Weese is showing a fifty year retrospective of his photography. Besides a unique eye for photographs\, he also has a unique attitude of gratitude towards photography. While not taking his role as photographer too seriously\, he considers each photograph a celebration\, appreciation of life\, as well as a moment of worship to the beauty and wonderment of our amazing world. Through the lens of his camera\, he sees sacred places and the spirit of the animals and human beings he photographs. His goal is to “capture the moment” to show people something they have never seen before. He sometimes combines images to accomplish this. \n“Photography has been a visual diary for me. There are lots of spiritual elements to it … to capturing a moment … a moment that’s here\, then gone (and not repeatable ever again). It’s a mysterious way of trying to ‘capturing time’ while time is passing..” Light On… \nThe show is sponsored by Photography at Oregon. \nhttps://www.photozonegallery.com/guy-weese \n

DESCRIPTION:Doremus Scudder\, Vienna – Behind the Façade\nA tribute to my erstwhile home town \nDec. 5\, 2023 through Jan. 5\, 2024\nDuring First Friday Artwalk\, Dec. 1\, 5-7:30 pm \nNew Zone Gallery\n110 East 11th Avenue\nEugene\, OR 97401\n541.683.0759\nTuesday through Sunday –  12 – 6 pm\nnewzonegallery.org\nFree and open to the public \nVienna – Behind the Façade\nAn affectionate look at little-seen parts of this famous city that evoke bygone times. \nVienna is a tourist town; flaunting its well-groomed baroque and Jugendstil architecture and rich cultural offerings. But if one ventures away from the “city on display\,” into the districts that rarely see tourists\, one finds many areas that have not been appreciably restored or renovated since before the Second World War. \nThere\, one can encounter remnants of the bourgeois opulence of the late 19th and early 20th centuries intermixed with post-war architecture and more modern designs. These scenes\, preserved in various states of repair\, bear witness to a society and lifestyle that has largely vanished. These things still stand\, cloaked with their patina of time\, not because they have been maintained\, but rather due to lack of resources\, reluctance to change\, neglect or simply because they were robust and useful enough to survive. \n“When I moved to Vienna in the mid-1980s\, I became fascinated with these ghosts from the past. I scoured the back streets and the far reaches of the city for them\, on my bicycle with my large-format camera strapped to my back. These images span the 30 years I spent there. They show a part of the city that I came to know and love. Vienna is still becoming a modern metropolis. These places\, which once embodied the character of the older city and its inhabitants\, are gradually being renovated or replaced by newer\, more homogeneous designs. Many of these scenes no longer exist\, having been demolished or rebuilt in the years since my photographs were made. I look on them with a bittersweet nostalgia.” \nDoremus works exclusively in “analog photography\,” using large-format cameras\, film\, and making silver-gelatin prints in the darkroom using traditional techniques. Nothing whatsoever is done using digital technology. His work is exhibited widely and represented in numerous galleries and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. \nwww.DoremusScudder.com \n

The exhibit and talk are sponsored by the Photography at Oregon Committee. \nThe 84-year-old Norlin has been actively involved in creative photography for 50 years\, ever since switching from a career in fisheries in the mid-70s to pursue one in fine art. During that time he has been a pioneer in several alternative approaches and process in the field\, from hand-colored silver prints and photo-collages in his early years\, to toy camera and pinhole photography in mid-career\, and most recently intentional camera movement (ICM) images made with his phone. \n“While the landscape has always been at the core of my work\, the images are more about an impression or dream remembered\, rather than pure descriptive fact\,” he said. “Over the years I have become more interested in the essence of a place than the pure description.” \nThe Oregon native has had a life-long interest in photographing the eastern side of the state\, and has assisted in four summer workshops conducted by the University of Oregon Photography Department in the Malheur and Steens Mountain country. From 1994 to 2016 he taught darkroom skills\, alternative process\, and digital photography courses at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. \nNorlin was born in Salem and grew up in Roseburg\, then received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Central Washington University in Ellensburg\, Wash. After 20 years as a darkroom technician and fine art photographer\, including several years with a studio in the Crees Building in downtown Corvallis\, he returned to the classroom at the University of Oregon to earn a Masters in Fine Arts in 1993. While at the UofO he worked as a teaching assistant under Profs. Dan Powell and Terri Warpinski. \nThroughout that time Norlin maintained an active exhibition career\, participating in solo\, group and juried shows from Oregon to New York. He has also curated exhibits for galleries at LBCC and the Benton County Historical Museum. He is a founding member of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild based in Corvallis and a former member of Gallery Calapooia in Albany. \nFour collections of his work have been compiled in self-published books\, including “Some Twenty Odd Images” in 2009\, “Desert Dance” in 2010\, “Memories\, Metaphors\, Manifestations” in 2012\, and “Illuminations” in 2013. These books can be seen at blurb.com.

To retain the “feel” of the analog source\, only traditional darkroom adjustments have been made to the digital image\, such as spotting\, cropping and toning. \nGene Tonry is a long-time member of the PhotoZone Gallery group in Eugene. His interest in photography goes back to the late 1970s when he took classes with master printer George Tice and fashion photographer Victor Steinhart in New York City. Having made the switch from film to digital in the early 2000’s\, he now finds it both interesting and ironic to be shooting with film again: \n“I have long admired the elemental\, dreamy quality of fine pinhole prints\, and truth be told\, I think there’s something about the anticipation\, guesswork\, and surprise that’s part of shooting with film that I missed after switching to digital.” – Gene Tonry \nTo view more of Gene’s work visit the PhotoZone Gallery website here: https://www.photozonegallery.com/eugene-tonry. \n

After all\, I was healthy and I was just like my father\, who lived a good life to age 96. \nOn the evening of February 28\, 2020\, after cutting my finger while preparing dinner\, I began a year long struggle to survive and recover from a near fatal Staph MRSA bacterial infection. I was eventually given no better than a 10% chance of survival. \nAfter collapsing at home and being brought to emergency\, doctors searched for a treatment for the antibiotic resistant infection as it continued to rage. It had entered my bloodstream and overtook my entire body. This would eventually result in open heart surgery mitral valve replacement\, stroke\, kidney dialysis and other surgeries. I could not walk or speak and have little memory of these events. \nDuring the months of my recovery memories of the Oregon Coast filled my mind and I dreamed of once again walking the beach. Over the past three years my daughters Caroline and Cathy have shared the story of my illness and survival with me. These images are a collaboration with them. I’ve combined my own photos captured on my many visits to the Oregon Coast with photographs taken by my daughters during my illness.\nI would not have survived without the love and fierce support of my beautiful family. \nThe exhibit runs from October 14 through November 8\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:Linda Devenow and Sandi O’Brien\, The Light Beyond \nSeptember 19 – November 30\, 2023\nReception & Gallery Talk on Wednesday October 11\, 3-5pm \nSouth Santiam Hall Gallery\nLinn-Benton Community College\n6500 Pacific Blvd SW\nAlbany\, Oregon 97321\n541-917-4999\nhttps://www.linnbenton.edu/student-life/arts-and-performance/galleries/ssh-gallery.php\nOpen weekdays from 8am to 5pm \n  \nTwo Eugene-area artists explore the surreal world of infrared photography in an exhibit this fall on Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus. \n“The Light Beyond” features the work of photographers Linda Devenow and Sandi O’Brien. \nA native of Michigan\, Devenow came to Eugene 20 years ago with a strong background in commercial photography. She began exploring the infrared spectrum in 2018\, first in black-and-white and more recently in color. Much of her work on display in the SSH Gallery focuses on eliciting color and emotion from landscape scenes that resemble oil and watercolor paintings\, often flirting with abstraction. \nO’Brien works primarily in black-and-white as she seeks out landscapes that “invite the viewer to step into the scene\,” as she puts it. “In the last few years I have been enamored with infrared photography due to the other-worldliness and magical quality that I find I can’t get in a straight black-and-white or color photograph.” A retired mental health therapist\, O’Brien lives in Creswell. \nBoth use digital cameras that have been converted to capture varying ranges of the infrared spectrum\, which lies just beyond the visible range of light and is thus invisible to the human eye.

Yes\, the subject we all know everything about yet perhaps nothing at all! Sam Blair has worked diligently and put together a very extensive expose on the subject of Composition. We invite you to join us for this one day class in the beautiful LightBox Photographic Gallery in the heart of Downtown Astoria. Please join Sam and enjoy a Saturday in Astoria with us! \nFrom those bulls drawn on cave walls in Lascaux over 15\,000 years ago\, to Greek and Roman artists\, to artists of the Renaissance like DaVinci and Michelangelo\, concept and composition have always been the first and foremost considerations in the creative process. “Composition”\, Edward Weston famously said\, “is the strongest way of seeing”. But what does that even mean? This class answers that question.\nOver the long arc of art history\, certain principles of composition have evolved. These are not rules\, as Art has no rules. (Sorry\, Rule of Thirds) Instead\, we have tools of composition which\, when combined with your own creativity\, distinguish strong\, compelling images from those Dorothea Lange called “one lookers”.\nAs photographers- the new kids on the block- you will learn what those tools are\, and how to apply them. Equally important\, you will learn why they appeal to the brain and the human sense of perception. There will be no recitation of stale formulas. Instead\, you will learn how to think about compositions\, using visual learning. Classic works of art and strong photographs will illustrate by example how the tools were used successfully\, and how you can apply those same tools. You will learn a workflow process guaranteed to\nproduce consistently stronger images\, or your money back\, no questions asked. I’m that confident in the process. \nAlready pretty good at compositions? Just remember Michelangelo’s last words\, spokenon his death bed: “Ancora imparo”\, he whispered\, translated from Latin to mean “ I was still learning”.\nSam Blair \n

SUMMARY:Susie Morrill - Palladium Prints
DESCRIPTION:Susie Morrill – Palladium Prints \nOctober 5th through November 1st\, 2023\nOpening Reception on Friday\, October 6th from 5-6 p.m. \nDot Dotson’s Gallery\n1668 Willamette St\,\nEugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 485-1771\n10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday\n(The Opening Reception only is on Friday)\nFree and open to the public \nPhotography at Oregon is proud to present an exhibition by noted Eugene-based photographer Susie Morrill. This show consists of all-new portraiture\, exquisitely printed in palladium. Here’s more from Susie: \n“In my image making\, I am concerned with portraying my subjects in a telling fashion. I feel that people reveal a lot about themselves by the things they surround themselves with in their environment. I strive to allow the subjects to portray themselves as they wish to be seen. The viewer gets the opportunity to journey into the lives of others and assess the person(s) sense of place that they find there. Ultimately\, I hope the viewer comes away with a sense of appreciating something simple\, and wonderful\, about others through observing a vignette of their lives through the image. \nThe palladium portraits featured in my current show were predominantly shot at the Oregon Country Fair this year.” \nSusie Morrill graduated from the U of O with an MFA in visual design and computer graphics. She taught all levels of photography at Lane Community College in the Media Arts and Technology Dept. for 30 years. In addition\, Susie has assisted and taught numerous photography workshops on the West Coast including Ansel Adams Gallery workshops\, the Portland Photographic Forum workshops\, the Photographic Image Gallery workshops\, and University of California extension workshops. Susie has been the chairman of the Photography at Oregon Committee for the past 40 years. She is a founding member of the PhotoZone gallery. Her personal work consists of medium format environmental portraits and digital images – typically portraits – printed with Palladium – an archival process first developed in the 1850s. \nwww.susiemorrill.com \n

SUMMARY:Friderike Heuer and Ken Hochfeld at The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Museum
DESCRIPTION:Friderike Heuer and Ken Hochfeld\, The Gorge Beckons:  Change and Continuity \nSeptember 16-October 31\, 2023\nReception September 16  6:00-8:00 pm \nThe Columbia Gorge Interpretive Museum\n990 SW Rock Creek Rd.\nStevenson\, Washington 98648\n509 427-8211\nDaily 10:00-5:00\ninfo@columbiagorge.org\nhttps://www.columbiagorgemuseum.org/events/the-gorge-beckons-change-and-continuity \nPhotographic artists Friderike Heuer and Ken Hochfeld have been photographing the Columbia River Gorge for years\, often during shared excursions\, drawn to its unparalleled beauty. In contrast to many contemporary photographers who long to capture pristine and uninhabited landscapes\, the views of yore\, both feel that the way the land looks now deserves documentation of an equally tangible and emotional beauty. \nHochfeld has photographed the river and the land in a traditional manner with an eye on what has remained constant and a nod to historical photography in the Gorge\, but also with openness to the existence of human activity. Heuer bases her photomontages on decades of photographing the landscape of the Gorge\, stressing the environmental and political impact of settler activity on tribal land. \nBoth bodies of work were developed as a joint project\, informed by intense love for the region and shared hopefulness that repair is at least partially underway. \nFriderike Heuer\nfriderikeheuer@gmail.com\nhttps://www.friderikeheuer.online/\nhttps://www.heuermontage.com/ \nKen Hochfeld\nkhphotog@comcast.net\nhttp://www.kenhochfeld.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Julie Moore at LightBox Photographic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Julie Moore\, Luminosity: an elemental conversation \nSeptember 9 – October 11\, 2023\nReception: Saturday\, September 9th 4 – 7 p.m \nLightBox Photographic\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, OR 97103\n503.468.0238\ninfo@lightbox-photographic.com \n  \nLightBox Photographic Gallery opens Julie Moore’s exhibit\, Luminosity: an elemental conversation on Saturday\, September 9th with an opening artist reception from 4 – 7 p.m. The exhibit showcases contemporary lumens and exclusive hand painted poly photogravures. \nThe images conjure up delicate communications between the pieces of art to each other and the elements that created them. Standing with one leg in the past and one in the present\, julie co-creates with molecules of sunlight\, wind\, dust\, spices and emulsions to allow the art to speak to the viewers & each other. \nThis interactive exhibit revolves around the way communication takes place\, not just for flora\, but for all of us. Information\, messages & meanings carried by the wind\, our breath\, greets the exhibit with the options for understanding\, misunderstanding\, ignoring\, acceptance and love. Not always seen clearly\, often information veiled\, the exhibit invites the viewers to create a discussion as to what meaning communication has to us\, whether from the art\, the nature that created it or between each other. \nPlease join the conversation. \nJulie Moore has been creating her evocative style of art for a decade. Though she has no formal training in photography\, Julie has felt captivated by the visual arts throughout her life. She was first inspired to pick up a camera many years ago while visiting Ireland in the company of a shaman\, and she has been photographing the beauty of her world ever since. Perhaps surprisingly\, she creates her captivating art primarily with her iPhone\, visualizing\, co-creating and processing her images with the camera she carries in her pocket. She also creates some of her images with her Holga\, a medium-format film camera. Julie makes many of her prints using the polymer-photogravure process. Drawn to this alternative method of printmaking\, she also employs other complimentary techniques during the intaglio printing process\, such as chine-collé and à la poupée. During the pandemic\, Julie began experimenting with the Lumen precess and fast became an advocate of this alternative process. \nAbout her work\, Julie has said: “My images share the way I see the world\, its soft tenderness and extravagant beauty\, its agonizing loss and exquisite aging. I see the overlooked aspects of life and nature. There is small and precious beauty in the unseen\, a part of everyday life that can go missing because it is not prominent\, yet has much to teach us.” Julie’s work has been shown in a number of juried exhibitions in various galleries across the country. \nThe exhibit runs from September 9 through October 11\, 2023. Complete show info is on the LightBox website at http://lightbox-photographic.com/shows/. Contact LightBox at 503-468-0238 or info@lightboxphotographic.com. And how each of those moments affect our senses\, our perceptions\, our feelings\, our relationships and our beliefs. All are in constant motion\, colliding like the drops of water running in a river. \nIn constant motion like a volcano that erupts in minutes but erodes over millennia. Like a flower that blooms for a few days even in barren places\, fades in weeks and returns next year. Like a building that supports a family and community for a few generations and rusts. \n“Join me as we celebrate our part in the constant spectacle of life\, and find beauty and gratitude as we and the world change\, “Moment to Moment.” \nAfter retiring in 2015 from a distinguished career in public service\, Grady Tarbutton turned to photography for artistic expression. “My goal is to create work that reveals the spirit and beauty of this world. And to do my part to engage everyone with it.” \nMinor White\, Imogen Cunningham\, Ray Atkeson\, Walker Evans and Margaret Bourke-White have all influenced him. \nGrady’s photographs are held in private and public collections\, including the State of Nevada Department of Veteran Services and at The Gordon Hotel\, Eugene\, Oregon. His work has been selected for Juried Shows\, including the Emerald Art Center’s 2017 and 2019 National Juried Shows. \nGrady Tarbutton has been a photographer since the 1970’s\, when he started shooting in film. All of his recent work is with digital cameras and lenses. He is married with two children\, one granddaughter and one grandson. He lives in Eugene\, Oregon \n“I spend my time hiking\, spending time with friends and family and appreciating the work of local artists. I often hike in the Diamond Peak Wilderness\, visit openings of photography shows in Oregon\, including the Emerald Art Center\, the Don Dexter Gallery and PhotoZone Gallery exhibitions.” \n“I find inspiration from artists whose work encourages people to reflect on their world and life.” \nInspiration\n• from William Stafford’s The Way It Is\, 1999 \n“The Little Girl by the Fence at School” \nGrass that was moving found all shades of brown\,\nmoved them along\, flowed autumn away\ngalloping southward where summer had gone.\nAnd that was the morning someone’s heart stopped\nand all became still.
