DESCRIPTION:Landry Major\, Standing Still in a Constant State of Departure \nWednesday\, June 18\, 2025\, 12:00pm to 1pm \nPortland Art Museum Photography Council Lunchtime Talk Series\n1119 SW Park Ave.\nPortland\, OR 97205\nIn the Trustee Room\, 4th floor in the Mark building\nwww.portlandartmuseum.org / 503 226 2811 \n\nStanding Still in a Constant State of Departure\nLandry Major and Cash Kasper \nIn her lunchtime talk\, Landry Major will discuss the photographic series\nmade in harmony with her son\, Cash. \nOn Christmas Day of 2023 her beloved son died. \nThis collaboration came out of the need to honor their relationship. To show\nhow\, even after he left the physical world\, they are still connected. The\nseries title is from a line Cash wrote in a notebook Landry found after his\npassing. She believes it was his feeling of always being on the verge of\nleaving this life but standing still staying for her. \nThese images are double and triple exposures comprised of collodion wet\nplate\, Polachrome slide film\, Polaroids\, gold and silver leaf on vellum and\nfilm images. Landry and Cash’s images blended into a vision of the new place he inhabits. \nLove that defies space and time. Hands that reach out to find each other\nbetween realms. Traveling beyond intense grief into understanding that they\nare still together. \nLandry Major is a photographic artist who splits her time between Los Angeles\, California and Portland\, Oregon. Landry has won honors from \nPhotolucida’s Critical Mass\, the Julia Margaret Cameron Award\, and Lurzer’s Archive. Her work has been seen in The New York Times\, Time Magazine\, AAP Magazine\, Black and White Magazine (UK)\, Analog Forever Magazine\, and Western Art Collector Magazine. This is a 6-hour class taught in one day with a two-hour break. \n10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: The morning will be spent learning to process film and develop black and white negatives.\n3 to 6 p.m.: Our afternoon will be spent printing photographs in the darkroom. \nThroughout the workshop\, you’ll receive guidance from an experienced instructor\, who will share tips on best practices and help you troubleshoot common issues Whether it’s perfecting the development process or fine-tuning your print’s contrast\, they’ll be by your side to ensure you leave with the knowledge and skills to confidently use a darkroom on your own. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you’ll have not only developed your own roll of black and white film but also created a series of prints from your negatives. \nThe workshop provides 1 roll of film\, and 10 sheets of photographic paper for developing and printing during class time. Over five decades\, Rauschenberg has compiled a truly distinctive archive of photographs encompassing a wide array of themes\, styles\, uses of the medium\, and range of subjects and content. This important resource represents a diverse mix of international and nationally emerging and established photographers. \nRauschenberg typically acquires photographs directly from the artists or from non-profit community-based arts organizations exhibiting or representing their works. \nRauschenberg has also traveled extensively and participated for decades as a highly regarded reviewer of photography portfolios at international gatherings of specialists who utilize and support opportunities for working creative photographers. \nIn Gathering\, one will find a wealth of individual points of view that\, when engaged\, may broaden each of our own visions: whether those considered perspectives are personal\, familiar\, social\, cultural\, political\, or spiritual. \nChristopher Rauschenberg reflects on his building of the collection: \n“At the core of what I’m doing is acquiring prints directly from photographers. Their diverse and joint explorations of the visual image have a poetic resonance. \nLUMENS by Kate Jordahl: “Lumens are a unique and magical re-imagination of the potential of silver gelatin paper. With organic lumens\, plants interact with photo paper in unexpected ways\, resulting in a range of magical colors. My grid lumens are both windows onto the world and an invitation for the viewer to complete the line from frame to frame. I am interested in the grid as a form and the continuation of the frame and the line from block to block. I find it important to be open to both the control and the role of chance in my work. I love working digitally but also need the physical world in my artwork that alternative processes allow.” \nTHE ENDLESS SPHERE OF TIME by Geir Jordahl: “Circles complete the stories we make in our passing—images of moments in the sphere of time that connect to everything. It is my hope that the pictures in dialogue with Rolf Jacobsen’s poetry take viewers into a conversation with their own path and place in the world. Together\, these elements come together to tell a story of seeing the world through loss and beauty.” \nGeir and Kate Jordahl have Masters of Fine Arts Degrees in Photography from Ohio University\, Athens\, Ohio. In 1983\, they founded the PhotoCentral Program in Hayward\, California\, and were directors of PhotoCentral until 2020. Kate is a Professor Emerita of Photography at Foothill College\, Los Altos Hills\, California. The Jordahls now operate True North Editions\, based in Bellingham\, Washington. \nTheir 2025 publications include “The Endless Sphere of Time” with spherical photographs by Geir Jordahl and “Poetry in Motion” with the equine photographs of Oliver Klink. Through three new series—Sacred\, Lost\, and The Weight of History—he reflects on how faith helps us endure\, opens us to others\, and transforms us through loss and transformation. \nThrough a fusion of photography\, encaustic\, and mixed media\, Liedtke constructs richly layered works that often borrow from the visual language of traditional religious iconography\, while reimagining them in unconventional\, contemporary forms. His materials and methods are as textured as the themes themselves: wax\, gold leaf\, photographic prints\, paper\, and embedded objects create surfaces that feel at once ancient and intimate. \nThese works do not offer easy answers. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and meet the artist on First Thursday\, August 7th\, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. \n“I long to see the world as I once did. I long to feel the world as I once did. \nIn A Preservation of Character\, I use the act of removal to incite vulnerability. I remove my clothing\, a physical layer of protection. I remove the hair from my head\, a totem of gender. I attempt to let go of protective behavior\, expression\, and thought. What I feel shields me from danger in the outside world has become a part of who I present myself as. \nHere\, I am neighbored only by textures\, shapes\, and light\, leaving me to observe and interact with myself. Who am I without these defenses? \nThis is an exercise in honesty\, and a longing for innocence. These are intimate moments of self-reflection\, and are presented to the viewer out of a need to share unguarded experience.” \nMegan Sinclair is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in analogue self-portrait photography that delves into the interconnectedness of body\, mind\, and environment. Through her work\, she uses vulnerability and image making as tools for processing and navigating personal trauma. Megan constructs in-home sets\, curating intimate spaces where distractions are minimized and self-expression feels safe. \nA 2020 graduate of California State University\, Sacramento\, with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography\, Megan’s projects have since been showcased internationally. Her work communicates emotional narratives and invites viewers into a dialogue about resilience. Working with his handcrafted 14 x 17 ultra large format camera at an elevation of 8\,375 feet takes thorough planning and intense determination. Jim invites the viewers to gaze into and through the windows and beyond to imagine what it was like in the 1880s to live and work in that inhospitable environment. Search the images for the ghosts of Bodie\, which magically appear in several of the weathered buildings and window reflections. \nEach one-of-a-kind 14 x 17 exhibition masterworks require multiple days to produce. Shot on film and hand printed in the historic process from 1864\, carbon transfer printing is rare in these days of AI technology and digital negatives. Each singular creation is a straight contact print from original film negatives transferred onto Kodak Ektalure G photographic paper and shot with a Cooke Series XV Triple Convertible lens. \n“Pathways of Light” presents our special forests of Yosemite National Park and the Redwoods of Northern California. Immerse yourselves and feel these images as you embark on a visual journey to very sacred places. \nThese 8 x 10 exhibition oeuvres emanated from Jim’s many years of experience with the special glow in these magical environments. \nAdditionally\, his handcrafted 8 x 10 film camera was used to expose this luminescence on Jim’s film. Each historic process Carbon Transfer contact print was handmade in his wet dark room from the original negatives\, aside from the fact that collectible soft focus lenses were used for this series of images. \nHandmade fine press edition books will be produced in the fall of 2025 to honor these places of historic importance which\, if not protected\, will be lost forever. \nFinally\, the codices collector edition mounted with a wire edge binding technique and inspired by master bookbinder Daniel Kelm\, contain all of the prints from this exhibition. Much of her work addresses the passage of time\, representations of women\, and the aging female body. More recently she’s begun a wide-ranging exploration of trees and the people who care for and study them. \nFloyd has received numerous awards including a 2024 Victoria & Albert \nParasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography and a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2024 her tree work was featured in Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Art Beat series (link) and in 2021\, her 39-year self-portrait series\, Weathering Time\, was published by the International Center of Photography and GOST books. \nFloyd’s artwork is in the collection of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art (Salem\, OR)\, the Center for Creative Photography (Tucson\, AZ)\, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta\, GA)\, Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago\, IL)\, and in numerous private collections. Floyd is an Emerita Professor in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University in Atlanta and lives with her husband and cat in Bend. Just as a postcard carries a brief message across distances\, this artwork bridges the gap between ‘my’ deeply personal and the collectively understood. I delve into how our individual experiences (memory) are often framed or echoed by larger cultural narratives (myth)\, revealing the enduring human quest for meaning and connection. My process involves layering and mixed media to visually represent the ephemeral nature of memory and the enduring power of myth\, creating textures and forms that suggest both fragility and resilience. The choice of translucent materials and fragmented imagery is deliberate\, aiming to capture the fleeting yet impactful essence of these “postcards\,” inviting viewers to piece together their own interpretations. \nMy hope is that these “postcards” serve as catalysts for personal reflection\, prompting viewers to consider their own intersections of myth and memory. I invite you to engage with each piece as a quiet conversation\, allowing the visual language to resonate with your own experiences of gratitude and love\, whether for people\, places\, or the very act of remembering. This will be a one-day workshop with a two-hour break mid-session. \nYou’ll receive guidance from an experienced instructor who will share tips on best practices and help you troubleshoot common issues. Whether it’s perfecting the development process or fine-tuning your print’s contrast\, they’ll be by your side to ensure you leave with the knowledge and skills to confidently use a darkroom on your own. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you’ll have not only developed your own roll of black and white film but also created a series of prints from your negatives. \nThe workshop provides 1 roll of film\, and 10 sheets of photographic paper for developing and printing during class time. The workshop also includes 3 weeks of membership here at Franklin FOTO so you can continue to come in and develop more film and make more prints (you will need to provide your own extra film and paper for lab time outside of classes). \nThe class is capped at eight students so that the focus can be on individual learning. \nAt Franklin FOTO we never want finances to be a barrier to access. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and meet the artist on First Thursday\, August 7th\, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. \n“I long to see the world as I once did. I long to feel the world as I once did. \nIn A Preservation of Character\, I use the act of removal to incite vulnerability. I remove my clothing\, a physical layer of protection. I remove the hair from my head\, a totem of gender. I attempt to let go of protective behavior\, expression\, and thought. What I feel shields me from danger in the outside world has become a part of who I present myself as. \nHere\, I am neighbored only by textures\, shapes\, and light\, leaving me to observe and interact with myself. Who am I without these defenses? \nThis is an exercise in honesty\, and a longing for innocence. These are intimate moments of self-reflection\, and are presented to the viewer out of a need to share unguarded experience.” \nMegan Sinclair is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in analogue self-portrait photography that delves into the interconnectedness of body\, mind\, and environment. Through her work\, she uses vulnerability and image making as tools for processing and navigating personal trauma. Megan constructs in-home sets\, curating intimate spaces where distractions are minimized and self-expression feels safe. \nA 2020 graduate of California State University\, Sacramento\, with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography\, Megan’s projects have since been showcased internationally. Her work communicates emotional narratives and invites viewers into a dialogue about resilience. This world quite wrongfully demands that perfection be limited to the young and privileged\, and so through these photographs\, I ponder the explorations of life and its glorious complexities that is afforded someone who made it past the “youthful” years and am decidedly enjoying an era of revelations and reincarnations. The wrinkles\, scars\, aches + pains\, plus sized clothing\, and my glorious white hair are each passages in the book of my life written into my layers skin for all to see. \nEach of these photographs are made by hand either in my basement darkroom or at Franklin FOTO using a variety of alternative processes as well as silver gelatin. Like all humans\, each print is beautifully unique and one of a kind. Through the use of additional artistic mediums such as embroidery\, paper collage\, cardboard sculpture\, paint\, etc.\, you will see that many of these photographs are not simply photographic prints. Photographers seeking dramatic ocean views with rugged cliffs meeting turbulent waves should prioritize a visit to the Oregon Coast. \nAs they present themselves\, our subjects will be diverse marine and plant species\, sea birds\, whales\, sea lions\, and lighthouses\, and stunning coastal landscapes.
