SUMMARY:Intro to Darkroom Workshop at Franklin FOTO
DESCRIPTION:Intro to Darkroom Workshop at Franklin FOTO \nSaturday\, September 27\, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (calendar) \nFranklin FOTO \n8953 N Lombard St\,\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \n130.00 \nMegan Sinclair returns this month to teach our Intro to Darkroom class. This will be a one-day workshop with a two-hour break mid-session. \nYou’ll receive guidance from an experienced instructor who will share tips on best practices and help you troubleshoot common issues. Whether it’s perfecting the development process or fine-tuning your print’s contrast\, they’ll be by your side to ensure you leave with the knowledge and skills to confidently use a darkroom on your own. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you’ll have not only developed your own roll of black and white film but also created a series of prints from your negatives. \nThe workshop provides 1 roll of film\, and 10 sheets of photographic paper for developing and printing during class time. The workshop also includes 3 weeks of membership here at Franklin FOTO so you can continue to come in and develop more film and make more prints (you will need to provide your own extra film and paper for lab time outside of classes). \nThe class is capped at eight students so that the focus can be on individual learning. \nAt Franklin FOTO we never want finances to be a barrier to access. Please feel free to use our sliding-scale to pay whatever amount makes sense for your budget. \nVisit our website for complete information and to register.

SUMMARY:Megan Sinclair\, A Preservation of Character Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Megan Sinclair\, A Preservation of Character \nAugust 6 -September 28 \nArtist Talk – Sunday\, September 28th at 12pm\, followed by a closing party until 4pm \n[things/found] Atelier\n1704 NW Johnson Street\nPortland\, 97209\n(503) 512-9719\nHours: Thursday-Friday-Saturday 1pm to 7pm\nwww.thingsfoundatelier.com \n\nA Preservation of Character \nAn exhibition of black/white analogue photography by Megan Sinclair \nPortland\, Oregon— A Preservation of Character will be the grand opening exhibition at NW Portland’s newest gallery space\, [things/found] Atelier. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and meet the artist on First Thursday\, August 7th\, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. \n“I long to see the world as I once did. I long to feel the world as I once did. \nIn A Preservation of Character\, I use the act of removal to incite vulnerability. I remove my clothing\, a physical layer of protection. I remove the hair from my head\, a totem of gender. I attempt to let go of protective behavior\, expression\, and thought. What I feel shields me from danger in the outside world has become a part of who I present myself as. \nHere\, I am neighbored only by textures\, shapes\, and light\, leaving me to observe and interact with myself. Who am I without these defenses? \nThis is an exercise in honesty\, and a longing for innocence. These are intimate moments of self-reflection\, and are presented to the viewer out of a need to share unguarded experience.” \nMegan Sinclair is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in analogue self-portrait photography that delves into the interconnectedness of body\, mind\, and environment. Through her work\, she uses vulnerability and image making as tools for processing and navigating personal trauma. Megan constructs in-home sets\, curating intimate spaces where distractions are minimized and self-expression feels safe. \nA 2020 graduate of California State University\, Sacramento\, with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography\, Megan’s projects have since been showcased internationally. Her work communicates emotional narratives and invites viewers into a dialogue about resilience. She currently resides in Oregon\, where she continues to create work that encourages a more open conversation of the human experience. \nwww.megansinclair.com \n[things/found] Atelier is half art gallery and half art/jewelry/vintage store attached to the studio for local Portland artist\, Angel O’Brien. The gallery and store are open Thursday through Saturday 1pm-7pm\, as well as by appointment or whimsy.

SUMMARY:Angel O'Brien\, Revelations & Reincarnations
DESCRIPTION:Angel O’Brien\, Revelations & Reincarnations \nOpening Saturday\, October 4th 5-8pm\nRuns through October \nFranklin FOTO \n8953 N Lombard St\,\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \nRevelations & Reincarnations \nThis series addresses the simultaneously personal yet deeply universal experience of living in an imperfect body. This world quite wrongfully demands that perfection be limited to the young and privileged\, and so through these photographs\, I ponder the explorations of life and its glorious complexities that is afforded someone who made it past the “youthful” years and am decidedly enjoying an era of revelations and reincarnations. The wrinkles\, scars\, aches + pains\, plus sized clothing\, and my glorious white hair are each passages in the book of my life written into my layers skin for all to see. \nEach of these photographs are made by hand either in my basement darkroom or at Franklin FOTO using a variety of alternative processes as well as silver gelatin. Like all humans\, each print is beautifully unique and one of a kind. Through the use of additional artistic mediums such as embroidery\, paper collage\, cardboard sculpture\, paint\, etc.\, you will see that many of these photographs are not simply photographic prints. Even though a photograph is indeed worth a thousand words\, sometimes I have even more to say. \nwww.thingsfoundatelier.com/angelobrien

SUMMARY:Loren Nelson\, Rich Bergeman\, Bill Kirby at LightBox Photographic Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Loren Nelson\, Rich Bergeman\, Bill Kirby at LightBox Photographic Gallery \nOctober 11\, 2025 through November 05\, 2025 \nReception: Saturday\, October 11th from 4-7pm \nLightBox Photographic Gallery & Fine Printing\n1045 Marine Drive\nAstoria\, Oregon 97103\n(503) 468-0238\nHours: Wednesday – Saturday 12 pm to 5 pm \nLoren Nelson\, The Colors of Time: Abstracted Visions from Astoria’s Boatyard \nI have spent hours wandering through this forest (harbor?) of colors and textures\, mesmerized by the amazing combinations of layered paint and rust! In my exploration of abstract images\, I’m going beyond traditional visual representation and inviting viewers on a journey of personal interpretation and contemplation. \nhttp://lightbox-photographic.c… \nRich Bergeman • The Paleo Lakes Project \nWater is the defining element in the geography of Oregon’s High Desert. An odd thing to say\, perhaps\, considering there is so little of it out there. But that wasn’t always so. During the late Pleistocene\, the entire expanse of the Great Basin was covered by vast inland seas. Over the last 10\,000 years they ever so slowly dried up\, leaving the arid\, steppe terrain we’re familiar with today.. \nhttp://lightbox-photographic.c… \nBill Kirby • Portraits of King’s Hill \nOn a quiet fall morning in Portland’s King’s Hill neighborhood I discovered historic homes illuminated by soft light on their century-old facades. What began as a few images soon became a project to explore the neighborhood’s history\, atmosphere\, and distinctive architectural styles. Portraits of King’s Hill is a series that capture each residence’s character and presence. \nhttp://lightbox-photographic.c… \nComplete show info is on the LightBox website\, http://lightbox-photographic.c…. LightBox also continues The Analog Forever Exhibit and features work from The Guild at LightBox consisting of Jim Fitzgerald\, Jody Miller\, Julie Moore\, Marc McVey\, Rachel Wolf\, Kathy Radie\, Michael Puff and Loren Nelson. SUMMARY:Carol Isaak\, SEASONS: Lan Su Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Carol Isaak\, SEASONS: Lan Su Gardens \nOct. 3 – Nov. 3\, 2025 \nOpening Reception:\nFriday\, Oct. 3 from 5-6 pm\, during the Eugene First Friday Artwalk \nArtist’s Talk:\nSunday\, Oct. 19\, 2:30 pm at the Emerald Art Center\, 500 Main St\, Springfield\, OR 97477 Tel: (541) 726-8595 \n\nDot Dotson’s Gallery\n1668 Willamette St.\nEugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 485-1771\nMon-Fri: 10 am – 5:30 pm\nSat: 10 am – 2 pm\ndotdotsons.com \nFree and open to the public \n\nSEASONS\nLAN SU GARDENS \nLan Su Garden in downtown Portland\, Oregon\, is one of the most stunning and authentic Chinese scholar gardens in North America. Photographer Carol Isaak found refuge there during the pandemic and fell in love with its archways\, plants\, bridges\, and the way modulated light would puncture its exterior walls. Isaak photographed the garden in all four seasons for this collection in an attempt to express the serenity she felt while in the garden. \nChinese scholar gardens are meant to express calm and provoke contemplation. The layers and shadows in Isaak’s work do both these things. The garden is a collaboration between sister cities Portland and Suzhou\, China. Lan Su is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025. \nIn Carol Isaak’s words: “I call myself an opportunistic photographer—an adventurer at heart. When COVID curtailed travel\, the freedom to photograph regularly in Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden became a vital outlet\, easing my longing to explore. Lan Su reconnected me with my deep love for Chinese culture. Entering the garden beneath the poetic inscription\, “The Garden of Awakening Orchids\,” I was transported—viscerally and visually—to Suzhou\, China. Suzhou\, Portland’s sister city and the inspiration for Lan Su\, is a place I had the privilege of visiting twice. It’s an astonishing city\, rich with artistry and tradition. \nAs I began to explore the Garden’s mysteries\, the seasons shifted—and so did my vision. Over three years\, I collaborated with the space\, allowing my eye to follow its changing light and subtle rhythms. In time\, it became my home away from home. Floating between the magical and the material\, I photographed without a plan—simply responding to the Garden. I’m delighted to bring my work back to the source of the Lan Su Garden.” \nCarol Isaak’s art education was at The Cooper Union (BA) in NYC where she lived for a significant time. She has been a Portland Art Museum docent/educator for twenty years\, specializing in photography\, Asian and contemporary art. Her affinity towards Asian subject matter has led to extensive work that has been showcased in five separate Chinese cultural festivals. Her Chinese portfolio has also been exhibited widely in the Pacific Northwest. as well as numerous exhibits in the United States. Her work is exhibited widely and collected by museums\, universities and private collectors. \nwww.carolisaakphoto.com

SUMMARY:Greg Giesy\, Colors of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Greg Giesy\, Colors of Nature \nNovember 1 through December 31.\nArtist reception on Saturday November 1 from 1-5 pm.\nClosing reception will occur on Saturday December 20 from 1-5 pm. \nThe O’Brien Photo Gallery\n2833 Willamette\, Ste. B.\nEugene\, OR 97405\n(541) 729-3572 \nHours will be from 1-5 on week days\, call to make special viewing arrangements.\nemail: picmac1945@gmail.com\nweb: https://www.waltobrien.net/the… \n\n“As people go through life on a daily basis\, the colors of nature around them are for the most part generalized. The sky is blue\, the tree is green\, and the squirrel is brown. At rare times during the year people may notice the bright red of a rose in spring or the yellow\, orange\, and red of leaves in fall. \nPainters expand that pallet of nature’s colors by mixing their paints to find the shades of that red rose\, lighten and darkening the blue of the sky\, or noting that there are several shades of yellow\, orange\, and red in those fall leaves. Looking closer they may note some green in the yellow and some brown in the orange of those leaves. But even most painters don’t see like a camera’s photographic vision picking up multitudes of tones\, shades\, and colors. \nPhotographers take what the camera records and turn that into what the photographer sees. That vision may be idealized or as true to human vision as the photographer can make it. The choice is the photographers’ to decide how to show the colors of nature.” \nAs an award-winning nature photographer Greg has a keen interest in the state of not only our wild places but our urban environment – the world outside our door. His years of experience have honed his eye to focus on and appreciate the details present in nature. He believes that the average person should spend more time to notice and focus on where we live. People need to connect\, appreciate\, and protect the world around them. \nGreg has been a serious photographer for over fifty years. He has ranged in styles from fine art black and white photography to architectural photography\, to color commercial product macro photography\, to event photography\, and onto nature photography which includes wide-angle\, macro\, and telephoto in both color and black & white photos of plant\, flower\, landscapes\, bird\, and other wildlife. \nHis photography is enhanced by his background in architecture\, jewelry\, and landscape design and construction. SUMMARY:Outside by Keith Z at [things/found] Atelier
DESCRIPTION:Outside by Keith Z at [things/found] Atelier \nNovember 6-29\nOpening Reception- First Thursday\, November 6th\, 5-9pm \n[things/found] Atelier\n1704 NW Johnson Street\nPortland\, 97209\n(503) 512-9719\nHours: Thursday-Friday-Saturday 1pm to 6pm\nwww.thingsfoundatelier.com \nOutside by Keith Z is a photographic collaboration with Portland’s homeless community\, combining photography\, social work\, and storytelling in order to create a better understanding of that community. \nThe work is comprised of portraits of community members\, environmental photographs of the circumstances in which they live\, long form interviews with these individuals\, and stories about those who are gone. All of the photos and stories are made collaboratively with community members\, with full consent and knowledge\, based on trust\, relationships\, and shared experience. \nOutside establishes proof of life for community members who are willfully ignored by family\, friends and larger society. Both the images and the storytelling focus on the human dimensions of an existential\, life threatening struggle that are often eschewed in favor of more sensational fare. The book provides space to become intimate with community members they might never have known\, the hope being that with better understanding comes better fellowship and better solutions. \nKeith Z lives\, photographs and reaches out to his community in Portland\, Oregon. A recovering addict and alcoholic who was homeless himself for some years\, lived experience informs his work. He has worked in a variety of transitional housing facilities and clinics. \n[things/found] Atelier is half art gallery and half art/vintage/jewelry store attached to the studio for local Portland artist\, Angel O’Brien. The gallery and store are open Thursday through Saturday 1-6pm\, as well as by appointment or whimsy.

DESCRIPTION:Black and White Infrared Photography by Donald Myers \nJanuary 3 – February 26\nReception on Saturday January 3 from 1-4 pm \nThe O’Brien Photo Gallery\n2833 Willamette\, Ste. B\nEugene\, OR 97405\n(541) 729-3572 \nOpen weekdays from 1-5 pm. Call to be sure we are open or to reserve a viewing time. \n“Through our journey in life there is struggle and reward. I try to make sense of it all by taking photos. I’m fascinated by the people and places I encounter along my journey and try to document it in interesting ways. I began my photo journey in Vietnam over fifty years ago and have been documenting my journey ever since. I studied photojournalism at Arizona State University. \nI’ve had many occupations but I never lost my enthusiasm for photography. No matter how small the space I lived in\, I always had a darkroom. Photography is a passion that rewards you throughout your life. \nOver the past five years I have become interested in infrared photography. I have two camera that I had converted to Infrared. One is called a 590 conversion and the other is an 830 conversion. The 590 sensor allows some of the normal color light waves through and I can create color infrared photos. With the 830\, it is completely black and white. Capturing the world in infrared has given me a new range of possibilities for creating captivating images.” \nDon Myers

SUMMARY:Up the Down Escalator by Gabriel Francis at Franklin FOTO
DESCRIPTION:Up the Down Escalator by Gabriel Francis at Franklin FOTO \nJanuary 2026 (on view for the full month) \nReception: January 3\, 2026\, 5 to 8 p.m.\nFeaturing live music by Growing Pains \nFranklin FOTO\n8953 N Lombard St\,\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/\nFree \nUp the Down Escalator is a street photography and handmade collage exhibition by Gabriel Francis\, presented as Franklin FOTO’s January exhibition. \nThe work invites viewers to slow down\, look closer\, and reconsider what we define as beautiful by centering moments and individuals often overlooked or dismissed. Francis is drawn to struggle and resilience\, and to the contrast between hardship and the strength people carry through it. Emotional\, mental\, physical\, financial\, and spiritual challenges are treated not as spectacle\, but as shared human realities\, approached with care\, dignity\, and respect. “These photographs are not meant to be sensational\,” Francis notes. “They are meant to be seen without judgment or pity\, and appreciated as reflections of our shared humanity.” \nIn early 2025\, Francis expanded the project through a series of handmade collages that combine photographic prints with found and weathered materials. Inspired by boarded up buildings\, notes left on walls and benches\, and objects discovered on the ground\, the collages create tactile environments for the photographs to exist within. Text and material fragments extend the work beyond documentation\, allowing it to function as lived artifact. \nGabriel Francis is a photographer whose practice centers on human connection\, public space\, and emotional honesty. Grounded in curiosity and movement\, his process is shaped by walking\, riding public transit\, talking with strangers\, and sustained engagement with everyday environments. Through photography and mixed media\, Francis explores the tension between light and dark\, resilience and vulnerability\, and the shared realities that bind us together.

SUMMARY:Rich Bergeman : The Paleo Lakes Project
DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman : The Paleo Lakes Project \nJan. 9 – March 13\nOpening Reception: Friday\, Jan. 9\, 4-7pm \nGallery II\nUmpqua Valley Arts Center\n1624 W. Harvard Ave.\nRoseburg\, OR 97471\nwww.uvarts.com\n541-672-2532\nOpen Tuesday through Fri 10am-6pm \nDuring the late Pleistocene—over 10\,000 years ago—Eastern Oregon was covered by vast inland seas that\, over the millennia\, slowly dried up\, leaving the arid steppe landscape we’re familiar with today. The footprints those paleo lakes left behind—the dust-blown playas and shallow salty seas sprinkled across the High Desert—are what inspired this project. \nHistory has always driven my work\, but I usually focus on the human story\, like the pioneer communities that sprang up or died out on the desert\, depending on the availability or scarcity of water. This project is different. Here I’m looking back on a story that was centuries in the making\, and it’s not something I was able to see at first. It’s taken years of seasonal forays into the High Desert to appreciate the spare elegance of its landscape\, with its wide horizons and immense skies. \nThe challenge was to find a fresh way to share this story\, and I found the answer in b+w infrared photography. Stripped of the color that can distract from form\, and emboldened by IR’s dark\, brooding skies\, the High Desert becomes a dramatic panorama where the forces of nature and time are more readily revealed.

SUMMARY:Street Scenes: Two Perspectives Photography by Richard Hassett and Doremus Scudder
DESCRIPTION:Street Scenes: Two Perspectives Photography by Richard Hassett and Doremus Scudder \nJanuary 6th through March 31st\, 2026 \nReception: Friday\, February 6th\, 5:30-8:30 pm\nDuring the Eugene First Friday Artwalk \nMidtown Arts Center Gallery\n175 E. 16th Ave\nEugene\, OR 97401\nMonday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:30 pm\nhttps://www.midtownartscenter.org/\nFree \nSTREET SCENES: TWO PERSPECTIVES Photographs from Eugene\, Oregon and Vienna\, Austria By Richard Hassett and Doremus Scudder \nEugene photographers Richard Hassett and Doremus Scudder join forces to present distinctly different views of the urban environment. Color vs. black-and-white; digital capture vs film; Europe vs the United States\, with and without people; approaches that seem to be polar opposites\, yet are somehow complementary through the harmony of subject matter and the well-ordered\, geometrical compositions. Two photographers present their visual insights into the often-overlooked aspects of two cities they are intimately familiar with. \n  \nIn their own words: \nRichard Hassett \nI am a Eugene-based photographer\, more accustomed to photographing nature and landscapes far removed from any city. For this project\, however\, I decided to focus my camera only within the confines of Eugene. Inspired by the work of photographer Fan Ho\, and the paintings of Edward Hopper\, I chose to seek out quiet\, sometimes mundane\, scenes of everyday urban life. Strong early morning light was my preference\, but fog or rain often set the scenes. For some reason\, I can’t explain why\, I am drawn to these quiet scenes that usually go unseen in a busy urban environment. They leave questions unanswered. I like the feel of it. While working on this project\, I have had no esoteric plan in mind. My desire is simply to create compelling images from the scenes I find. The photos are open to individual interpretation. If an image causes the viewer to stop and think about what is happening\, or even why it was taken\, then I have succeeded. All photographs were made in color using a digital camera. The prints are archival pigment prints. \n  \nDoremus Scudder \nBefore I moved to Vienna in the 1980s\, I had concentrated mainly on landscapes and natural forms in my photography. But after arriving there\, I was confronted\, and fascinated\, by the geometric forms; the right angles\, parallel lines\, the arbitrarily contrasting textures and tones\, and the juxtaposition of old and new that make up human constructs. Above all\, I was drawn to the narrative component that makes up the background of these scenes. Although people are absent\, they are central to these images; their strivings and successes; their struggles and failures and how time has dealt with them. These are not “pretty\, postcard pictures\,” but rather\, I hope\, images that work on multiple levels\, being able to stand on their own as abstract geometrical compositions (I spent time absorbing the work of Piet Mondrian)\, but also full of the human story\, sometimes whimsical\, sometimes tragic\, that comprise the subtext behind the façades.\nOver the 30 years I lived in Vienna\, I spent countless hours carrying my 4×5 camera and tripod around the city\, usually on my bicycle\, looking for scenes that were visually interesting\, but full of though-provoking content. I prefer temporally ambiguous scenes\, which I feel lends a feeling of universality and timelessness to the images. I find that the gradual metamorphosis of human artifacts over time – the old being overlaid with the newer or gradually sculpted by time – creates a temporal patina that is rich with narrative. I leave it to the imagination of the viewer to populate and enliven these scripts. All photographs were made on 4×5 film and printed on silver-gelatin paper in the darkroom. \nwww.doremusscudder.com\nwww.photozonegallery.com/richard-hassett

SUMMARY:Robert Kalman: Interactive Talk & Large Format Camera Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Robert Kalman: Interactive Talk & Large Format Camera Demonstration \nWednesday\, February 11\, 6:30 p.m. \nFranklin FOTO \n8953 N Lombard St\,\nPortland\, OR 97203\nWednesday – Sunday\, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.\nhttps://www.franklinfoto.org/ \nFree \nWhat is it like for you to be an American? \nThe answer will be different for all 340 million of us. \nAcclaimed portrait photographer Robert Kalman spent four years traveling through the United States taking nearly 500 portraits of people with his 8×10 camera. Each subject was asked one question: “What is it like for you to be an American?” \nThe responses\, handwritten by each person\, were depicted to create a spectrum of ideas about what it is like to live in this country in this era. \nThis presentation includes a demonstration of how the portraits were made using the 8×10. One person in the audience will be asked to pose\, and answer the question about what it’s like to be an American. That person receives a print of their portrait. \nBooks of this project will be available on-site.

SUMMARY:Timeline: Community-Generated Archive with Joni Kabana
DESCRIPTION:Timeline: Community-Generated Archive with Joni Kabana \nSunday\, February 15\, 2-4:30 pm PST via Zoom\nSubsequent photo walk w/Joni Kabana on Sunday\, March 22\, 3-5 pm PST \nZoom and\nAlbina Press\n5012 Hawthorne Blvd.\nPortland\, OR. 97215 \nRegister here: Timeline: Portland\, Oregon with Joni Kabana (Hybrid Learning) – The Los Angeles Center of Photography \nTuition: Member Rate\, $2\,800 OR $375 per month for eight months; Non-Member Rate\, $3\,000 OR $400 per month for eight months. \nTimeline is a real-time exploration of our changing world through the photographic lens—a living\, evolving archive built by documentarians\, photojournalists\, and street photographers capturing what is happening right now in the places they call home\, documenting a nation in flux and creating a visual record for next generations. \nThe Portland\, Oregon cohort of Timeline\, led by artist and educator Joni Kabana\, invites photographers to engage with a city shaped by environmental consciousness\, social movements\, and deeply rooted local communities. Participants will document Portland’s evolving cultural and political landscape\, creating real-time images that reflect both resilience and uncertainty in a region known for questioning systems and imagining alternatives. \nUnder Kabana’s guidance\, the cohort will develop a nuanced body of work that honors lived experience and place—contributing a vital perspective to the national Timeline archive and expanding the visual conversation around a city in continual negotiation with its identity. \nThe first meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday\, February 15\, 2-4:30 pm PST. It will be an introductory session\, during which Joni will discuss her work and the participants will share theirs. The group will meet for a photowalk at Albina Press\, 5012 Hawthorne Blvd. in Portland\, on Sunday\, March 22\, 3-5 pm PST. Subsequent sessions will be scheduled by Joni and the group. \nJoni Kabana is a visual artist who is most happy when she is deep into a world which is unfamiliar to her. Her body of work spans continents and cultures with a primary focus on portraiture. Her belief is that our best portraits come if we “photograph thoughts\, not faces” and her approach focuses on the psychology\, both with the subject and the photographer\, that arises when attempting to capture the essence of a person. Joni teaches for several institutions and organizes her own portraiture and international photography workshops. \nStreet portraiture is her signature teaching area\, helping many overcome fear of approaching random subjects in addition to “crossing cultural divides” by enabling photographers (new to the craft or experienced) to create authentic portrayals of brief or in-depth encounters. You can find Joni roaming backroads afar from home or making pictures in Eastern Oregon where she nestles in an isolated cabin.

SUMMARY:Darryl Baird - Continuum: A Retrospective Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird – Continuum: A Retrospective Exhibit \nFebruary 6th through March 4th 2026\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 6th from 5-6 p.m. \nArtist’s Talk: Sunday\, February 15th at 2:30 p.m. at the\nEmerald Art Center\, 500 Main St.\, Springfield\, OR \nDot Dotson’s Gallery\n1668 Willamette Ave.\nEugene\, OR 97401\n(541) 485-1771\nMonday – Friday: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.\nSaturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nphotographyatoregon.org \nRenowned photographer Darryl Baird presents Continuum\, a retrospective exhibit of his work from the last three decades. Included in the exhibit are photographs from his series Transcending Loss – (1995-97)\, Aqueous Humor (1997-98)\, Re-Picturing the Picturesque (2005-08)\, Post Mortem (2008-09)\, Pictorialist Drawing (2009-19)\, and Glass Worlds (2025-Present). \nDarryl Baird: “I’ve been an ardent student of history all my life\, but it was the history of photography that truly captured (for me) the essence of how history informs and directs our actions. My introduction to photo-history led me to find early photographers\, and the periods that they were attached to\, like Pictorialism\, Modernism\, and even Post-Modernism. As my research and reading of these periods continued\, I felt the urge to explore them as a means of personal expression. Looking back at the images in this exhibition\, I can see these early aesthetic patterns emerge\, like chapters in a book… my book.” \nOriginally from Dallas\, Texas Darryl Baird has an over fifty-year career as a photographer and educator. His initial education was at the United States Naval School of Photography in Pensacola\, Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Broadcast-Film Arts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas\, Texas. \nHe worked for twenty years as a commercial architectural\, advertising\, and editorial photographer. He left the commercial field for graduate school\, first in a doctoral program in Aesthetic Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of North Texas. \nDarryl is an Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Michigan in Flint\, where he created and taught graphic design and photography programs. He led the department as chair of the Communication and Visual Arts department for a critical transition into a combined discipline. \nHis work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston Texas\, and the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. \nSince retiring in Oregon\, he has been included in two exhibitions at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland (PNW Drawers)\, a solo exhibition at the Performing Art Center in Newport\, Oregon\, and awarded an artist residency at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. \nhttps://www.darrylbaird.com \n
