It was the inquisitive scientific mind\, the human hand and creative ideas that furthered the Art of Photography. In the world of today current photographic technology and past process discoveries are merging and we see creative photographic works that use both modern resources and the touch of the human hand with historical photographic processes. \nLightBox Photographic Gallery and Analog Forever Magazine have forged a partnership with The Analog Forever Exhibit. We wish to celebrate the lessons we have learned\, the processes we have discovered and the paths we have forged in the Inaugural Analog Forever Gallery Exhibit. The work in this exhibit all includes an analog element of photographic means. It can start in an analog manner or medium or it may include any of the same throughout the process\, or just the final piece may be a analog photographic print. There must be at least one analog element in the creative process. About 5% was recovered in 2021\, down from 9% in 2014. Another 12% was incinerated in waste-to-energy facilities\, and the rest ended up in landfills\, rivers\, and oceans. When I read that plastic fibers were found at the 27\,000-foot level on Mount Everest\, I imagined the view when climate change has melted the glaciers and mountain snowpack\, leaving a thin layer of plastic.\nThese glowing\, plastic-draped landscapes suggest snow-capped mountain ranges\, but are actually erosion control measures. They show how plastic surrounds us\, literally\, and will threaten life on earth for generations.\nSide note: The Rhône Glacier in the Swiss Alps has been covered with massive blankets during the warmer months for several years\, which has reduced glacial melting by as much as 50%. Another example of art imitating life! \nThese photographs were made with a Nikon D700 digital camera and an iPhone 8+\, processed in Photoshop\, and printed on Moab Juniper Fine-Art paper using archival pigment inks. \n

On the Oregon coast west of Coos Bay\, Shore Acres is often termed the “Point Lobos of Oregon.” It is an area of convoluted rock forms and tide pools. North and south along the coast are pristine sand dunes and volcanic “seastacks” forming the rugged coastline \nThis is the backdrop for an intensive photographic experience with Stu Levy and Willie Osterman. Early mornings and late afternoons will feature field sessions with camera-side evaluation of composition and exposure. At mid-day\, the instructors will lead print viewing and critique sessions and will present their own work. Darkroom as well as digital workflows will be discussed. \nStu and Willie are intimately familiar with the region and offer you a unique combination of technical expertise and creative insight which promises to make this workshop an unforgettable experience. We will be based at the Global Inn in Coos Bay\, where a block of rooms has been reserved for the workshop participants. \nAll camera formats\, film\, digital\, and all printing approaches are welcome. \nFor everyone’s safety\, completed COVID vaccination is a requirement for attending the workshop. \nWillie Osterman is a Fulbright Scholar and a professor of Fine Art Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. His publication ‘Déjà View: A Cultural Re-Photographic Survey of Bologna\, Italy’ in its second edition is now out of print. \nStu Levy is a photographer living in Portland\, Oregon. He has led photography workshops on the Oregon Coast for over 30 years. Standing with one leg in the past and one in the present\, julie co-creates with molecules of sunlight\, wind\, dust\, spices and emulsions to allow the art to speak to the viewers & each other. \nThis interactive exhibit revolves around the way communication takes place\, not just for flora\, but for all of us. Information\, messages & meanings carried by the wind\, our breath\, greets the exhibit with the options for understanding\, misunderstanding\, ignoring\, acceptance and love. Not always seen clearly\, often information veiled\, the exhibit invites the viewers to create a discussion as to what meaning communication has to us\, whether from the art\, the nature that created it or between each other. \nPlease join the conversation. \nJulie Moore has been creating her evocative style of art for a decade. Though she has no formal training in photography\, Julie has felt captivated by the visual arts throughout her life. She was first inspired to pick up a camera many years ago while visiting Ireland in the company of a shaman\, and she has been photographing the beauty of her world ever since. Perhaps surprisingly\, she creates her captivating art primarily with her iPhone\, visualizing\, co-creating and processing her images with the camera she carries in her pocket. She also creates some of her images with her Holga\, a medium-format film camera. Julie makes many of her prints using the polymer-photogravure process. Drawn to this alternative method of printmaking\, she also employs other complimentary techniques during the intaglio printing process\, such as chine-collé and à la poupée. During the pandemic\, Julie began experimenting with the Lumen precess and fast became an advocate of this alternative process. \nAbout her work\, Julie has said: “My images share the way I see the world\, its soft tenderness and extravagant beauty\, its agonizing loss and exquisite aging. I see the overlooked aspects of life and nature. There is small and precious beauty in the unseen\, a part of everyday life that can go missing because it is not prominent\, yet has much to teach us.” Julie’s work has been shown in a number of juried exhibitions in various galleries across the country. \nThe exhibit runs from September 9 through October 11\, 2023. In contrast to many contemporary photographers who long to capture pristine and uninhabited landscapes\, the views of yore\, both feel that the way the land looks now deserves documentation of an equally tangible and emotional beauty. \nHochfeld has photographed the river and the land in a traditional manner with an eye on what has remained constant and a nod to historical photography in the Gorge\, but also with openness to the existence of human activity. This show consists of all-new portraiture\, exquisitely printed in palladium. Here’s more from Susie: \n“In my image making\, I am concerned with portraying my subjects in a telling fashion. I feel that people reveal a lot about themselves by the things they surround themselves with in their environment. I strive to allow the subjects to portray themselves as they wish to be seen. The viewer gets the opportunity to journey into the lives of others and assess the person(s) sense of place that they find there. Ultimately\, I hope the viewer comes away with a sense of appreciating something simple\, and wonderful\, about others through observing a vignette of their lives through the image. \nThe palladium portraits featured in my current show were predominantly shot at the Oregon Country Fair this year.” \nSusie Morrill graduated from the U of O with an MFA in visual design and computer graphics. She taught all levels of photography at Lane Community College in the Media Arts and Technology Dept. for 30 years. In addition\, Susie has assisted and taught numerous photography workshops on the West Coast including Ansel Adams Gallery workshops\, the Portland Photographic Forum workshops\, the Photographic Image Gallery workshops\, and University of California extension workshops. Susie has been the chairman of the Photography at Oregon Committee for the past 40 years. She is a founding member of the PhotoZone gallery. But what does that even mean? This class answers that question.\nOver the long arc of art history\, certain principles of composition have evolved. These are not rules\, as Art has no rules. (Sorry\, Rule of Thirds) Instead\, we have tools of composition which\, when combined with your own creativity\, distinguish strong\, compelling images from those Dorothea Lange called “one lookers”.\nAs photographers- the new kids on the block- you will learn what those tools are\, and how to apply them. Equally important\, you will learn why they appeal to the brain and the human sense of perception. There will be no recitation of stale formulas. She began exploring the infrared spectrum in 2018\, first in black-and-white and more recently in color. Much of her work on display in the SSH Gallery focuses on eliciting color and emotion from landscape scenes that resemble oil and watercolor paintings\, often flirting with abstraction. \nO’Brien works primarily in black-and-white as she seeks out landscapes that “invite the viewer to step into the scene\,” as she puts it. “In the last few years I have been enamored with infrared photography due to the other-worldliness and magical quality that I find I can’t get in a straight black-and-white or color photograph.” A retired mental health therapist\, O’Brien lives in Creswell. \nBoth use digital cameras that have been converted to capture varying ranges of the infrared spectrum\, which lies just beyond the visible range of light and is thus invisible to the human eye.

After all\, I was healthy and I was just like my father\, who lived a good life to age 96. \nOn the evening of February 28\, 2020\, after cutting my finger while preparing dinner\, I began a year long struggle to survive and recover from a near fatal Staph MRSA bacterial infection. I was eventually given no better than a 10% chance of survival. \nAfter collapsing at home and being brought to emergency\, doctors searched for a treatment for the antibiotic resistant infection as it continued to rage. It had entered my bloodstream and overtook my entire body. This would eventually result in open heart surgery mitral valve replacement\, stroke\, kidney dialysis and other surgeries. I could not walk or speak and have little memory of these events. \nDuring the months of my recovery memories of the Oregon Coast filled my mind and I dreamed of once again walking the beach. Over the past three years my daughters Caroline and Cathy have shared the story of my illness and survival with me. These images are a collaboration with them. I’ve combined my own photos captured on my many visits to the Oregon Coast with photographs taken by my daughters during my illness.\nI would not have survived without the love and fierce support of my beautiful family. \nThe exhibit runs from October 14 through November 8\, 2023. The exhibit and talk are sponsored by the Photography at Oregon Committee. \nThe 84-year-old Norlin has been actively involved in creative photography for 50 years\, ever since switching from a career in fisheries in the mid-70s to pursue one in fine art. During that time he has been a pioneer in several alternative approaches and process in the field\, from hand-colored silver prints and photo-collages in his early years\, to toy camera and pinhole photography in mid-career\, and most recently intentional camera movement (ICM) images made with his phone. \n“While the landscape has always been at the core of my work\, the images are more about an impression or dream remembered\, rather than pure descriptive fact\,” he said. “Over the years I have become more interested in the essence of a place than the pure description.” \nThe Oregon native has had a life-long interest in photographing the eastern side of the state\, and has assisted in four summer workshops conducted by the University of Oregon Photography Department in the Malheur and Steens Mountain country. From 1994 to 2016 he taught darkroom skills\, alternative process\, and digital photography courses at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. \nNorlin was born in Salem and grew up in Roseburg\, then received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Central Washington University in Ellensburg\, Wash. After 20 years as a darkroom technician and fine art photographer\, including several years with a studio in the Crees Building in downtown Corvallis\, he returned to the classroom at the University of Oregon to earn a Masters in Fine Arts in 1993. While at the UofO he worked as a teaching assistant under Profs. Dan Powell and Terri Warpinski. \nThroughout that time Norlin maintained an active exhibition career\, participating in solo\, group and juried shows from Oregon to New York. He has also curated exhibits for galleries at LBCC and the Benton County Historical Museum. He is a founding member of the Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild based in Corvallis and a former member of Gallery Calapooia in Albany. \nFour collections of his work have been compiled in self-published books\, including “Some Twenty Odd Images” in 2009\, “Desert Dance” in 2010\, “Memories\, Metaphors\, Manifestations” in 2012\, and “Illuminations” in 2013. But if one ventures away from the “city on display\,” into the districts that rarely see tourists\, one finds many areas that have not been appreciably restored or renovated since before the Second World War. \nThere\, one can encounter remnants of the bourgeois opulence of the late 19th and early 20th centuries intermixed with post-war architecture and more modern designs. These scenes\, preserved in various states of repair\, bear witness to a society and lifestyle that has largely vanished. These things still stand\, cloaked with their patina of time\, not because they have been maintained\, but rather due to lack of resources\, reluctance to change\, neglect or simply because they were robust and useful enough to survive. \n“When I moved to Vienna in the mid-1980s\, I became fascinated with these ghosts from the past. I scoured the back streets and the far reaches of the city for them\, on my bicycle with my large-format camera strapped to my back. These images span the 30 years I spent there. They show a part of the city that I came to know and love. Vienna is still becoming a modern metropolis. These places\, which once embodied the character of the older city and its inhabitants\, are gradually being renovated or replaced by newer\, more homogeneous designs. Many of these scenes no longer exist\, having been demolished or rebuilt in the years since my photographs were made. I look on them with a bittersweet nostalgia.” \nDoremus works exclusively in “analog photography\,” using large-format cameras\, film\, and making silver-gelatin prints in the darkroom using traditional techniques. Please join us for the opening Artist Reception from 4-7pm. \n“The goal of Zen Buddhism\, simply stated\, is achieving and maintaining the highest mental state in life – equanimity. The road to that lofty ambition is living with simplicity\, minimalism\, and non-attachment to ego and materialism. It also means living with the awareness that all we really have in our lives is the present moment\, referred to as “tada ima”\, only now. When that mental state is achieved\, it creates a feeling of oneness and connection with the universe\, and is the well spring to the inherent joy\, happiness\, and inner peace within each and every one of us. I have attempted to reveal that mental state visually with this series called “Zenscapes”. My hope is that from your looking at the images I am able to share with you a bit of the peace and joy I felt while making them.” Sam Blair \nSam has a B.A. degree in English from the University of Denver\, and a J.D. degree from Lewis and Clark College of Law. He was a civil litigator for 35 years\, with offices in Oregon and Hawaii. He has taught as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Willamette University College of Law in Salem\, Or. He is afflicted with wanderlust\, and retired from practicing Law to pursue his passion of travel and fine art photography. As a self taught photographer\, he has explored over 90 countries. His mission is to capture “the essence of things” in other cultures\, beaches\, and the fascinating homo sapien. He is a haiku poet. His poems have been published in multiple literary anthologies and journals. Sam is a longtime student of Zen Buddhism\, and trained in the Japanese martial art of Aikido\, where he earned a Black Belt. He lives in a Pine forest fronting Kyle Lake in Warrenton Or. \nThe Guild at LightBox is a group of photographers that exhibit work regularly at the gallery as well as support the mission of the gallery.
