We’ve already received an impressive collection of donations so far\, including contributions from internationally-renowned artists such as Christopher Burkett\, Steve Dzerigian\, Christopher Landis and Brian Lanker\, as well as outstanding works from many exceptional local and regional artists\, such as Barbora Bakalarova\, Sarah Grew\, Walt O’Brien\, Susie Morrill and Doremus Scudder. \n\nThe online auction event begins May 1st\, but you can also view a select number of photographs exhibited at Dot Dotson’s Gallery in Eugene in three parts from April through June. \n\nThe first installment of the PAO Auction Exhibit opens on First Friday\, April 5th. \n\nThere will be an opening reception from 5-6 p.m.\, complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres. It promises to be a special occasion; we hope to see you there. \n\nYou can view the show all of April\, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. \n\n\nFollowing that\, new works will be displayed each month through the end of the auction period\, so watch for the exhibit changes on May 3rd and June 7th so you can see these remarkable prints in person. These are both First-Friday opening receptions from 5-6 p.m. \nThe auction itself will be open for bids starting May 1st and continuing through June 30th. It’s social\, it’s play\, it’s athleticism\, it’s community. Skating brings together people of all ages\, and builds bonds that often last for life. I started skating as an adult\, and in the ten years I have been doing it I have seen the people around me grow and change.The youngest person I have skated with during this time period was four years old\, and I regularly skate with people in their late 50s and early 60s. New faces have showed up\, and some skaters I used to see every day now only come out every once in a blue moon. Many of the younger people I have skated with have children of their own now\, including some folks I started seeing at the park when they were in middle school. \nThis photo series tries to show both the flashy and exciting part of skateboarding\, but also the community aspect and the ups and downs of people at my home park\, Pier park. Community and identity has always been an integral part of skating—people often identify as skaters long after they have hung up their boards\, and many stay in touch with their skate friends for life. \nThis work is dedicated to Andrew and to Cyan. Andrew\, called HDrew by his friends\, died tragically in 2018 in an urban exploration accident; Cyan is serving a multi-year prison sentence for his involvement in the Black Lives Matter protests. The process involved Jason not knowing what they were going to bring with them and the results are an experiment with light and color to create magical portraits. \n\nJason Hill is a photographer and filmmaker currently living in Portland\, Oregon. He started working with a camera during his adolescence and is largely self-trained. His practice today is focused on portraiture with an emphasis in the mechanics of light\, vibrant color\, emotion\, and natural beauty. \n\nHis work has been featured in the Portland Art Museum with his “In My Skin’’ and “A Day in Eugene” series in 2022. And was also recently featured in The Black Artists of Oregon at the Portland Art Museum.

It was a profound experience\, which not only changed my photography\, but changed the course of my life. I decided that this would be a good time to sample the photos I’ve made over these years\, with the exception of musicians in performance (which is a whole other story). \nThe earliest photos reflected my recently acquired environmental concerns\, and tried to show a pristine landscape. Aspects of abstraction started to appear in my photos\, and I was asked to join a group of former Minor White students. \nThey continued to meet monthly\, and often repeated one of his quotations: “One does not photograph something simply for ‘what it is’\, but ‘for what else it is.” \nThis meshed nicely with my growing sense of abstraction. Gradually\, man-made elements began appearing in the photos. As I was attempting to photograph a bridge in the Columbia River Gorge\, I made a Polaroid of my friend Terry Toedtemeier (photographer and curator) who was with me\, then continued to photograph the bridge in 15 sections\, including him in four. This was the beginning of my Grid-Portrait project\, which combine photos of my subject at different times and in different places\, and often includes the photographer. \nUltimately\, fleeting lighting conditions and phenomena became part of my visual language and create a common thread through the images. \nI think of the lines from the Grateful Dead song “Stella Blue”: \nAll the years combine\nThey melt into a dream\nAnd that’s how the last 45 years of my photos feel to me.”\n~ Stu Levy. \nStu Levy is a photographer living in Portland\, Oregon. He has led photography workshops on the Oregon Coast for over 30 years. He studied with Ansel Adams and was an assistant instructor for Ansel’s workshops in Yosemite and Carmel; he was also an instructor at the Ansel Adams Gallery Workshops. \nHis photographs are in many public and private collections including The Center for Creative Photography\, the George Eastman House\, the Portland Art Museum\, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta)\, Museum of Photographic Arts\, San Francisco Civic Center\, Portland Visual Chronicle and the Wilson Centre for Photography. \nHe was one of the founders of the Photography Council of the Portland Art Museum and was the Council President from 2003 to 2006. \nHe is also on the Board of Directors of Photolucida and the Pacific Northwest Photographers Archive. \nPublications: \nCranial Czar\, Eh? By exploring the concept of memory\, I am interested in how our perception of a place can change over time\, particularly in relation to the complex and often intangible effects of climate change. \nI start with a single digital photograph and create 10-20 “variants” in Photoshop. I then select two to three variants and combine them together digitally into a single lenticular print. When displayed\, the viewer can move around the print and the images will fade in and out of one another creating a surreal effect.” \nChris Bennett is a photographer living in Detroit\, Michigan. When I encounter something that resonates meaningfully with my core\, an immediate progression of unforced feelings and thoughts follow. Flowing with the current or “listening” rather than “talking”\, I allow myself to drift away from conscious deliberation or internal dialogue so that the empirical and intuitive can be my guides when making images . Once enough finished examples reveal related content and form\, conscious decisions are integrated as I develop further the series\, maintaining as much of the original spontaneity and openness as possible. \nThis exhibition is titled “Logic of the Subconscious”\, because a personally symbolic pattern emerged through the elements\, placement\, and combinations chosen without preplanning. \nUsing simple\, adapted meditation techniques in the process of observation\, I follow intuitive feelings when exposing with the camera. These seem to flow from the reservoir of memory and the subconscious as quick reflexes or emerge gradually from a meditative or dreamlike state. After developing the film by hand\, a variety of techniques in “wet” darkroom printing\, toning\, occasionally hand coloring\, followed up by cutting\, pasting\, and finally shadow box framing are used to produce images that follow an unbroken spirit of connection from the initial experiences to their final presentation. \nWeaving history\, philosophy\, and the natural world with art making\, Steve Dzerigian adopted photography as his primary investigative and contemplative tool. The activities of photography and teaching it became his life’s work. He instructed field workshops for the University of California\, Santa Cruz Extension from 1977 through 2007. For the Ansel Adams Gallery Photography Workshop in Yosemite\, from 1984 to 1990\, he was an assistant instructor and served as director one of those years. In 2002\, he was co-coordinator for the “Ansel Adams Centennial Symposium in Yosemite\, Edges and Intersections: The Evolution of Change”. DESCRIPTION:Rich Bergeman\, The Land Remembers: The Rogue River Wars \nAugust 5 – October 15\, 2024 \nThe National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center\n2267 Hwy 86\nBaker City\, Oregon 97841\nhttps://www.nps.gov/places/000…\n(541) 523-1843\nOpen daily 10am-5pm \n“The Land Remembers” features over 40 black-and-white prints by Corvallis photographer Rich Bergeman that explore the Southern Oregon landscapes where the Rogue River Indian Wars were fought 170 years ago. \nOne of the bloodiest–and yet mostly overlooked–of the Indian conflicts to occur in the Oregon Territory\, the Rogue River Wars were characterized by persistent fighting between local tribes and the miners and settlers who moved into southwest Oregon in the early 1850s. \nUsing an infrared-sensitive camera\, Bergeman spent two years traveling from the Rogue Valley to the Oregon Coast to photograph scenes at or near the sites of battles\, peace parlays\, massacres and other significant events that occurred during the war years of 1851-56. Bergeman said his goal was not to document specific historic sites\, but rather “to bring the largely forgotten war back into our collective consciousness through a reflective study of the landscapes that played host to those tragic events.” \nIn addition to the photographs\, the story of the war years is retold through wall text\, maps and gallery guides\, as well as an accompanying book available in the Lone Pine Mercantile at the Interpretive Center. \nThe source of the conflict was the convergence of two separate events–the discovery of gold in the region and the passage of the Oregon Donation Land Claim Act. The various tribes who had populated the area for centuries saw their homelands suddenly invaded as settlers and miners streamed in. Conflict inevitably followed\, with a cycle of fighting and truces between 1851 and 1854 that eventually erupted into all-out war involving the U.S. Army. It finally ended in 1856 with the forced removal of the Rogue Valley and South Coast tribes to reservations at Siletz and Grand Ronde. \nBergeman is a retired instructor of journalism and photography at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. The 75-year-old photographer has been exhibiting his work throughout the Northwest since the 1980s. Over the past two decades he has focused primarily on portraying forgotten Northwest histories through photographs of what’s been left behind. Terry’s love for the land\, knowledge of geology\, and his personal expressions have had a meaningful impact on me as an artist. This work represents a tribute to a friendship I regrettably never experienced. \nBasalt is an extrusive igneous rock that flooded the Pacific Northwest 17 to 6 million years ago. Best known for dramatic columns\, we also see its subsequent forms in the Pacific Northwest\, much of which have been revealed as a result of the great Missoula floods that swept through eastern Washington and the Columbia River Gorge various times more than 12\,000 years ago. Dark gray and black in color and rich in an array of tones and shapes\, I think basalt tells its stories best in bright sun. Additionally\, after much of the year under water\, lakeside basalt\, when exposed to the summer sun takes on an unusual and rich light gray hue. Basalt can also exhibit fantastic color derived from lichens and moss that find special places to thrive. Madrone Wall Park near the Clackamas River in Carver\, Oregon is a prime place to see these surreal colors at their very finest. \nOthers have written about rocks in ways that best describe my thoughts while making these images: \n“I take another look at the stone\, run my fingertip over the meticulous brushstrokes\, and realize that nothing ever returns to time unless it is stored in mute\, voiceless objects; rocks do tell tales after all.”\nStefan Hertmans\, War and Turpentine \n“Everything dreams. Most recently I have wanted to introduce color into my prints without abandoning the beauty of the platinum/palladium process. This collection is primarily printed using two different techniques which separate the color from the black in an image. Black is printed with platinum/palladium while color is printed with the 19th century single or tri-color gum bichromate process or printed using modern digital archival pigment inks. Platinum/palladium over archival pigment ink requires two layers for each print while gum bichromate over platinum/palladium can require four to six layers for each print. DESCRIPTION:Pro Photo Supply – Cyanotypes a DIY Workshop with Claudia Hollister \nSaturday August 31st 11am-3pm \nPro Photo Supply Event Center\n1801 NW Northrup St\, Portland\, OR 97209\n503-517-3646\nMon-Friday 8am-5pm\nwww.prophotosupply.com \n\nPro Photo Supply is teaming up with Blue Sky Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts and local artist Claudia Hollister to offer this fun and unique workshop where you’ll get a hands-on lesson in creating your own cyanotypes! \nWhat is a cyanotype? \nCyanotype prints are an exciting non-toxic\, alternative photographic process using light-sensitive iron salts and UV light to develop a blue-colored image. Cyanotype prints have no emulsion\, instead\, the light-sensitive iron salts have been infused into the paper fibers while a negative film placed on the sensitized paper is exposed to UV light. Once the image has finished being exposed it must be washed out in water to reveal a positive image. The blues are unique to this process and can’t be duplicated in any other medium. \nThe cyanotype process was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 to create architectural blueprints. Before the invention of photography\, scientists utilized detailed descriptions and other artistic processes (typically illustrations or engravings) to record botanical specimens. In 1843\, Anna Atkins printed the first cyanotype prints documenting plant and sea life. Anna self-published her detailed and meticulous botanical images using the cyanotype photographic process in her 1843 book\, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions. With a limited number of copies\, it was the first book ever to be printed and illustrated by photography. \nAbout this Class \nThis is a 4-hour workshop designed to take you through the process of creating your own photographic cyanotype prints. In this workshop\, you will learn how to create both a positive and negative transparency film from a photograph. \nYou will learn what photographs are likely to give you a successful cyanotype print. We use the word “likely” since the process is not an exact science. In my work\, I am primarily concerned with the translation of stories across time\, an investigation that draws me toward the concept of deep time. Through my photographic collages — slicing and reorganizing slivers of frozen time — I explore how our stories might inhabit the past\, present\, and future simultaneously. \nIn “American Timescapes\,” I address the ephemerality of the American experience across deep time. Each piece in this series is constructed from three separate photographs of a landscape or region\, taken minutes\, hours\, days\, or even years apart. These images are then cut\, folded\, and combined to form 3-dimensional photo sculptures that visualize a compressing of time. \nAs we confront the realities of climate change and accelerate toward numerous technological breakthroughs — from gene editing to advances in AI and expanded space exploration — the narratives we create will shape who we are becoming. “American Timescapes” is an invitation to reflect on our relationship with all of time — the past\, the present\, and the deep future — and to reconsider how we are crafting the story of our existence. \nKris Davidson\, a native of Sweden\, spent her childhood between the Scandinavian subarctic and Texas. She spent 15 years as an editorial photographer before transitioning to an artistic practice that explores how stories are translated across the past\, present\, and future. Using collage and mixed media on photographic prints\, Kris delves into storytelling and memory across deep time. \nHer photography has been featured in National Geographic Traveler\, Lonely Planet Traveler\, and other major publications. Prior to her photography career\, Kris worked as a branding professional in the San Francisco Bay Area for eight years. She is also an experienced educator\, having collaborated with the National Geographic Society and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. \nKris holds a BA from Loyola University in New Orleans and is currently pursuing an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, expected in 2025. My early years were spent on a farm in the rural eastern edge of the state. I went on to study and earn a degree in photography at Montana State University. It was there that I was convinced of photography’s enormous importance as a medium for communication and self expression. I was also drawn to the combination of technical knowledge and aesthetic considerations needed to achieve any level of competence in the media. \nMy technical approach to black & white photography follows traditional\, film based techniques. Medium format film cameras are used as well as a traditional darkroom where I develop the film and print the photographs. Selenium toning is used on all but the smallest prints to enhance the final appearance and to increase the archival qualities of the image. These are methods that I have employed since studying photography at MSU. \nMy photographs are produced in numbered\, limited editions and are matted and framed using archival materials. Although my technical approach is ‘old school’\, I strive to produce contemporary artworks that show a unique vision\, emphasizes content and evoke a response on various levels. \nI work out of my home and studio in Springfield\, Oregon. \nSilver Gelatin – what is it? \nSilver Gelatin photography methods were developed in the 19th century and became the standard way of producing black & white photographs for much of the 20th century. It has a rich tradition of journalistic as well creative fine art photography that spans several decades. Well known mid century artists such as Edward Weston\, Dorothea Lange\, Ansel Adams\, Imogen Cunningham\, and countless others produced a lifetime’s work using silver gelatin as their primary photographic process. \nThe term ‘silver gelatin’ refers to the coating on the photographic paper which consists of light sensitive silver halides suspended in a flexible gelatin emulsion. It is this coating that enables the paper to reveal an image when exposed to light\, usually passed through a black & white negative\, and then processed in chemistry consisting of a developer\, stop bath and fixer. It’s science and chemistry but it seems like magic.

The exhibit runs through December 7\, 2024. This exhibit will not be seen on the website\, it is in person only.  \nYears ago\, Robert and Kerstin Adams bought from the Metropolitan Museum a reproduction of a Roman portrait of the Greek goddess Thalia\, a muse for pastoral poets. They kept it on top of a bookcase as a reminder of the classical inheritance that we all share. Recently\, they moved it temporarily to a spot next to the front window in their living room\, and discovered in the brighter light qualities that inspired them. Robert photographed the sculpture for two days at various hours. What most impressed them was the portrait’s serenity. \nThalia by Robert Adams has been released as a hard cover book by Fraenkel Gallery\, San Francisco. It is the honor of LightBox Photographic Gallery to host the exhibit Thalia by Robert Adams with the original Silver Gelatin prints created from the negatives. It is also the honor of Gallery director Michael Granger to have assisted Robert with this project by printing the original work at Robert’s request and direction. The exhibit Thalia opens at LightBox Photographic Gallery on Saturday\, October 12th and exhibits through December 7th. \nRobert Adams (b.1937) has been a photographer for sixty years. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Guggenheim Foundation\, and the MacArthur Foundation\, and has resulted in more than fifty publications. Retrospective exhibitions of his photographs have been held at the Yale University Art Gallery\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, and\, most recently\, at the National Gallery of Art.

The exhibit runs through November 6\, 2024. \n“Walking with a friend down an alleyway on our way to lunch\, I stumbled upon a patch of sunlight reflected from a parked van onto the pavement in the shadow of a neighboring building. While exploring the visual possibilities of a pile of fishing nets on a dock in Astoria\, I encountered the rusty hull of a vessel under repair. During a stay at my son’s flat in London\, I became fascinated by the constantly shifting reflections inside a lampshade. These moments of discovery are always unexpected and delightfully surprising. \nIn my photography\, I don’t actively search for images. Such an approach often leads to disappointment when visual opportunities don’t appear. Instead\, I prefer to immerse myself in environments where I am more likely to be invited by Spirit to photograph. I remain open and receptive\, grateful when these visual gifts present themselves. Often\, though\, I am greeted by something entirely random and unexpected\, which catches me off guard and inspires a response. The images in this show are some of my favorite examples of these serendipitous encounters.” \n~ Loren Nelson \nFor over 45 years Loren Nelson has photographed with a Deardorff 4X5 view camera and film\, and used a traditional darkroom to produce selenium-toned silver gelatin prints. Recently\, he has also incorporated a digital workflow\, using 35mm digital cameras and an iPhone to respond more spontaneously to his surroundings. Along with his darkroom work\, he prints his images on fine-art papers\, using archival pigment inks. Ongoing bodies of work include Pacific Northwest landscapes\, seascapes\, driftwood studies\, botanicals\, and Wasteland\, a series on plastic-wrapped landscapes. Loren Nelson’s photographs are in numerous public and private collections\, including the Portland Art Museum; the Hallie Ford Museum of Art; Salem\, Oregon; and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts; Tampa\, FL. Each attendee’s image will be visible for discussion focused on positive feedback\, critiques\, and questions about each photographer’s work. \nTowards the end of this event\, each attendee will be randomly assigned the extra print of another attendee’s work to take home.
