Their images that capture the feeling of light\, bitter cold and subtle details of their environments are presented as Platinotypes and carbon transfer contact prints. \nRich with precious metals and displaying special techniques developed over many decades\, Terry Thompson’s Platinotypes are unique\, one-of-a-kind glimpses into the frozen world of Yellowstone. The challenges of working with film in sub zero temperatures are many; but the desire to complete his vision overcomes all of these obstacles. His prints\, made by hand\, exhibit his connection to the environment. \nMeanwhile\, the delicate richness of Jim Fitzgerald’s carbon transfer prints transport the viewer through the corners of Yosemite which are only accessible in the cold frozen days of winter. Each hand-made carbon transfer print is a testament to the beauty of this frozen landscape. Utilizing unique pigments and special formulas\, known only to the artist\, the luminous icicles in the frozen waters of Bridalveil creek and rare seasonal snow melts of El Capitan meadow glisten against the steadfast Black Oaks in a three dimensional dance of light. \nThe images of harsh winters of Yellowstone and Yosemite are but a glimpse of their natural beauty that they desperately need to preserve. July 18\, 2-4PM \nPoetry Reading: 3PM — Collins Gallery\, Central Library (Third Floor) \nPortland Central Library\n801 SW 10th Avenue\nPortland\, OR 97205 \nMonday\, Thursday\, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM\,\nTuesday and Wednesday from 12 PM to 8 PM\,\nSaturday from 10 AM to 6 PM\,\nSunday from 12 PM to 6 PM \n  \nThis project is a collaboration between photographer Jim Lommasson and poet Willa Schneberg. Jim Lommasson has created “What We Carry” projects around the U.S. with the houseless\, and with refugee communities who were forced to flee their homelands. Willa Schneberg is the recipient of two fellowships and the Oregon Book Award in Poetry\, both from Literary Arts. \nAt the What We Hold & Leave Behind exhibition at the Central Library Collins Gallery in downtown Portland\, object images are coupled with the poets’ hand-written poems in the white space of 19” x 13” archival pigment prints. Included are their actual physical objects\, memorabilia and artist books. \nThis project celebrates the lives of senior seasoned poets\, including former Poet Laureates Paulann Petersen and Kim Stafford. In his studio\, Jim Lommasson photographed the objects of special significance from over 25 master poets— objects that reveal what truly matters to them\, acknowledgments of well-lived lives in terms of work\, family\, relationships\, identity\, place\, and loss. These elder poets paired Jim Lommasson’s images of their objects with poems\, and hand-wrote them with great care. Some poets with shaky hands employed scribes. They met in Willa Schneberg’s office to share their prints and poems with each other. \nDuring “Cover to Cover\,” the celebration leading up to the 2025 Portland Book Festival\, Jim Lommasson projected slides of each print\, as 20 of the celebrated poets shared their poems to a packed audience of over 70 at the book-cramped digs of Mother Foucault’s in SE Portland. \nIt is important that this exhibition\, reading\, and poetry workshop showcasing this project should be at the Central Library\, which has one of the largest readerships in the U.S. and also one of the few that has an exhibition space. Especially since the pandemic\, it has not always been a place that many\, particularly elders\, have experienced as a safe space. We see it as the magnificent house of books in which poets feel honored to have their work in the John Wilson Special Collections Room\, check out books and visit the Collins Gallery. The poets in the What We Hold & Leave Behind project believe this is the perfect location to show the prints of Jim Lommasson and to celebrate their lives through poetry. \nPoetry Workshop for elders: Sunday\, August 23\, 1-4PM \nOn Sunday\, August 23\, 1-4PM\, Willa Schneberg will offer an inclusive poetry workshop to seniors in the community. He tries to use analog printing methods whenever possible. Most of his work in this show is Black and White on silver gelatin paper. He has one example of hand coloring on platinum/palladium prints. \nSandi explores infrared\, color panoramas\, platinum and recently explored photo gravure printing. \nWalt and Sandi are the owners of the gallery and like to show work of other local photographers during the year. However in July and August we hang our own work with the warning that there could be days of closure due to possible long trips. The book is punctuated by short reflections on songs key to road trips and their larger meaning: the longing for a disappearing America and a changing landscape\, what it is to be a woman traveling in the world\, finding the spiritual in the journey and the people you encounter\, confronting death and politics\, joy\, age\, how Bob Dylan might be the best test of a relationship\, and whether The Beatles or Bob Marley are more important to world peace. \nThe exhibition will feature images and music from the book. I was only 29. For the past 13 years\, I have been photographing this experience in an effort to make sense of this consuming loss. At times\, my camera helps me feel more present with what is happening. Other times\, it’s a tool for me to disassociate. My camera became an emotional buoy to survive with. The grief I feel is tremendous and often overwhelming. \nThis collection is not only about losing someone in slow motion\, but also what do the feelings of grief look like? How do I honor my memories of her? What does loss look like? I see so much of how we care for my mom as a reflection of her caring for us as babies and small kids. It feels like a circle of patterns and memories. And I see so much of this experience reflected in the natural world. The collection includes images I’ve made of my mom\, family snapshots\, my journal entries\, and photos my mom took with her cellphone. \nGuided by her introspective sense of place and belonging\, Kristina examines themes around human consciousness reflected in nature. She investigates the idea of where our physical and non-physical worlds intertwine\, observing the bewildering experience of existing as a human. Her practice is heavily influenced by grief\, memory\, and connecting the state of dreaming as a critical part of human life. \nGrowing up in the sprawling San Francisco Bay Area\, Kristina followed her love for rural communities\, living and working in the Black Hills of South Dakota for over a decade. Regional Arts & Culture Council. She has completed residencies at Jentel Arts (Wyo.)\, Arte Ventura (Spain)\, and Green Box Arts (Colo.). Early in her career\, she broke a 130-year run of men monopolizing the newsroom\, becoming the first female staff photographer and later the first female photo editor at The Rapid City (S.D.) Journal. During that time\, she was nominated twice for South Dakota’s Young Journalist of the Year. Five camera conversions later and I’m still smitten by how\nIR has jazzed up my hitherto feeble efforts at landscape photography.\nI’ve been a diehard B+W photographer since the 1980s\, having burned\nfilm through a succession of 4×5\, 5×7\, 8×10 and pinhole cameras\,\nmostly aimed at the usual suspects—abandoned buildings\, old barns\,\nghost towns\, eerie interiors\, etc—printing in silver and then platinum. \nOccasional forays into straight landscape photography taught me how\nchallenging it is to master the black-and-white landscape print.\nInfrared has become my secret sauce. Those vexingly muddled middle\ngrays characteristic of green scenery when photographed in straight\nB+W hop off an IR print as sparkling highlights (sometimes too much\nso). Fauna and flora in these landscapes – photographed predominantly in the Pacific Northwest – are endangered. Climate change and the renewed threat of industrial extraction of resources\, forests and minerals alike\, will do irreparable harm. I thought the ephemeral nature of clouds and the fragility of lace were fitting symbols for why we need step up in our efforts to turn things around.

Please join us! \n“The Cascade Mountains of Oregon experience time on a different scale than humans. Humans come and go in a few decades\, mountain ranges come and go at the speed of continental drift. After millions of years of tectonic movement and volcanic activity and erosion\, the central Cascade Mountains underlying Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters Mountains are a fractured\, porous sponge soaking up rain and snow where it slowly trickles down to a vast underground body of very slowly moving water. In places that tremendous reservoir spills over and emerges as roaring spring-fed creeks like Olallie Creek in the McKenzie River watershed. After thousands of years immersed underground\, this pure\, pristine water creates an ecological environment that is unique. The water in this creek is crystal clear and tinged blue due to the lack of impurities. Relatively immune to weather\, the Olallie Creek never floods\, never dries out\, never freezes and always flows at 40°F.\, providing conditions that never change for the plants and animals that call this home. \nThis exhibition is the result of soaking myself in this dynamic\, interconnected web of coexistent flora and fauna that survive in comfortable equilibrium in this compact area. This study is limited to the last 200 yards of this mile-long stream just before it merges with the McKenzie River.
