Over five decades\, Rauschenberg has compiled a truly distinctive archive of photographs encompassing a wide array of themes\, styles\, uses of the medium\, and range of subjects and content. This important resource represents a diverse mix of international and nationally emerging and established photographers. \nRauschenberg typically acquires photographs directly from the artists or from non-profit community-based arts organizations exhibiting or representing their works. \nRauschenberg has also traveled extensively and participated for decades as a highly regarded reviewer of photography portfolios at international gatherings of specialists who utilize and support opportunities for working creative photographers. \nIn Gathering\, one will find a wealth of individual points of view that\, when engaged\, may broaden each of our own visions: whether those considered perspectives are personal\, familiar\, social\, cultural\, political\, or spiritual. \nChristopher Rauschenberg reflects on his building of the collection: \n“At the core of what I’m doing is acquiring prints directly from photographers. That’s where I get my real satisfaction in collecting. With photography\, one literally sees the world through someone else’s eyes\, and we each have a different way of looking at the world around us. Having seen the work of thousands of photographers\, I’ve had a great many opportunities to discover new ways of seeing. Designed for photographers of all levels\, this workshop combines the excitement of working with professional dancers with the technical and creative guidance you need to take your images to the next level. \nPart 1: Preparation — Self-Guided Materials (Delivered the week before class) \nBefore the in-person session\, you’ll receive a set of resources to help you prepare. These materials will cover foundational concepts and a host of inspiration\, so you arrive ready to make the most of your time in the studio. \nPart 2: On Location — 6 Hours of Shooting (Saturday) \nSpend the day photographing professional dancers in a variety of settings\, both in the beautiful studio and in the surrounding environment. Fritz will be your guide all through the day\, both demonstrating concepts\, and working with you one-on-one to help refine your vision and imagery. You’ll learn how to: \n• Work with natural light and artificial light\, including flash and modifiers \n• Direct and pose dancers to highlight form\, grace\, and drama \n• Anticipate and capture the decisive moment when movement and emotion align \n• Choose locations\, wardrobe\, and styling that enhance your vision \n• Build confidence in working with models and performers \nIf you want to work with flash\, equipment will be provided for your use\, though you are welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer. The goal is to help you explore multiple approaches\, experiment creatively\, and walk away with a portfolio of dynamic images. \nPart 3: Virtual Editing & Image Review (Follow-Up Session) \nSeveral days after the shoot (November 19\, 7-8:30pm)\, we’ll gather online for an editing and critique session. You’ll receive constructive feedback on your photos\, learn editing techniques to make your images shine\, and discuss strategies for building a strong body of dance or performance photography.
