somewhere only we know is a collection of images made by Portland photographer Sarah Graves. Sarah values analog methods of art making and uses film to make her photographs. Analog photography slows down the creative process and allows for reflection while making the images.

This curation is inspired by distant places close to our heart. Many of us have experienced this emotion due to recent world events. This sentiment is embodied in a German word, fernweh. The word is a combination of fern, meaning distance, and weh, meaning an ache, misery or sickness. It translates to ‘far woe’ or an ache to explore far-flung places. The images are places of importance both far and near that were not able to be visited for a time. They are places in the artist’s memory preserved on film. They offer both comfort and longing. They are bittersweet places, out of the reach of time, both untouched and untouchable.
