Clinical depression is a condition that is on a sharp rise with devastating societal and personal costs. The disease is associated with shame, which often becomes a hurdle for those seeking help. The cyclical nature of gradual improvements and backslides can also make depression an exhausting ordeal that can wear out the limited support systems around the afflicted, leaving them isolated. The photographs in this exhibition were taken over one year as I was trying to deal with my depression and propensity to stay house bound by regularly meeting up with friends and family for swimming. My experience is projected onto the people in my community that I leaned on as a support system, and through the lens of the edges of rivers, lakes, and seas we visited together while I was trying to feel better. For me, the water is a place where I have to muster up the courage to step in, submerge myself, and return to shore. It is the place all life on earth came from, but also a place where you can drown.
