Photography impacts how we see and experience the world. Most skateboarders are men, and most images we see of skaters are of men, and maybe the occasional tokenized women. There is nothing biologically special about men that makes them more likely to pick up or stick with skating. The barriers are cultural. That means they can be dismantled. By placing large scale images of skaters who are not cis-men in spaces shared by skaters and non-skaters, this show seeks to increase representation, and to chip away at the skate scene’s patriarchal culture.

The photos in this show each feature a different nontraditional skater. Most were shot at Pier Park in St Johns. They were taken using a variety of analogue cameras, including Canon AE-1, reloadable-disposable cameras, an Olympus Pen FT, and more. A bonus mini exibit of instant photos is included, featuring skaters from an event hosted by Queer Skate PDX. Skaters posed with their friends, and decorated each instant shot with messages of justice and empowerment. Their energy and their words are a gift to us all.
