Around June of 2017 Walt O’Brien began teaching the old process of platinum/palladium printing at his lab. The class has 2 to 3 students per class. Since then there have been 35 students, many of which have taken the class multiple times. In 2019 Walt’s gallery hosted a clothesline show of student work up to that point.
Recently, Framin’ Artworks invited Walt’s students to have a clothesline show in their gallery in downtown Eugene. 15 to 20 students will be represented in the show and it will be on the first Friday Art Walk of Eugene.
Walt will be there to answer questions and a video presentation by Bostick and Sullivan will demonstrate the process. Platinum/Palladium printing has been done since the late 1800’s and is still practiced by many photographers.
Walt continues to offer the class on a regular basis. Students learn how to make a digital negative, coat emulsions, control contrast, expose and process prints using a modified printing method. Bostick and Sullivan of Santa Fe New Mexico is one of the suppliers of materials and has modified the process in recent years. Walt uses their newer process to teach the class.
O’Brien Photo Imaging is located at 2833 Willamette in Eugene. Contact Walt for more information at: picmac1945@gmail.com or visit his website at
